Nop-Tll AMERICAN COLONIES, IN THE Markets of the MoTiiEK-CouxTy—Gone!—It will be remembered that, at an early day in the late protracted session of our Colonial Parliament, on the motion of Mr.Egan, the honorable and patriotic member for the County of Ottawa-, and the indefatigable friend of the lumber trade, an address, to Her Majesty, was unanimously adopted by the legislature, remonstrating, in strong language, against the proposed remission of all protection to Canadian timber in the markets of Great Britain. We yesterday published my Lord Grey’s reply to the Address in question i and we cannot refrain from asking his Lordship, if he conld not have told us the altered policy of Great Britain was adopted “with a view to tie advantage of the British Dominions at large,” Thb Governor General.—We learn that Messrs.McFarlane, Homier and Lynch, left this city last night for Toronto, to invite His Excellency to visit this city on his way to Boston. The Hon.Mr.McKay accompanied by his son, and his son-in-law, Mr.Keefer, left this city yesterday morning for England. We understand that Mr.Keefer goes home to consult the principal English engineers upon the subject of a bridge between the shores of the St.Lawrence at this city.He has prepared most elaborate plans of the shoals, &c., which, of course, he takes with him.hostility to the prompt and equitable settlement of the Reserves and Rectories, which we, in common with others, had always demanded. To accomplish the triumph of our principles at the approaching elections, is an object of intense interest to every well-wisher of his country. This depends much upon the union of Reformers—a-union upon principle.Such arrangements have been made, as we announced last week, as will avert open disunion in our ranks, while the electors are requested to make no concession—to abandon no position—to slacken no effort to choose fit and proper persons to represent them in the next Parliament.Yet, with the full knowledge of this, the Globe denounces the attempt at conciliation upon such grounds. His new-born zeal in the Anti-State Church cause prevents him from giving his adhesion to the arrangement until he is satisfied that this cause is not to be sacrificed. Is the long-tried character of Dr.Rolph, as a representative, of the people ; his pre-eminent advocacy of religious liberty and equality—his long and unwearied efforts to abolish the Clergy Reserves, no guarantee to tile country that our cause would be safe in his hands ?The Globe of yesterday remarks : We don’t object to the union—on the contrary, »vc go moroilgtllj- for uniouj and Yrcro aronnfç tho first to propose it ; but we want to be satisfied that the Anti-State Church cause is not to be sacrificed in bringing it about.Satisfy us on that, and all our opposition will be removed in a moment. The union, so far as it has been affected, simply removes obstacles out of the way, and gives free course to the energies of Reformers in the choice of their Representatives. Is this, we ask, to be despised if nothing else should follow ?Are we justified in refusing one advantage because we may not immediately get more?Future advantages will depend upon the wisdom and fidelity of Reformers at the hustings.Do they want the services of Dr.Rolph?—they have now an opportunity of obtaining them.It is absurd to look for the details of an arrangement which is contingept on circumstances, and must be determined by the expression of public opinion.— Toronto Examiner.A Word city of Montreal possesses the most splendid piers and wharves of any city on this continent, provided as it now is with brilliant gag-lamps and most efficient Water-Police, equipped with an apparatus to afford assistance to any unfortunate person who may fall into the water.Yet with ail this, is it not extraordinary that we have no Humane Society, provided with the necessary apparatus tor resuscitating drowned people ?indeed, 1 question if such an Apparatus can be found in the city. The frequent deaths by drowning i should awaken the citizens of Montreal to provide ; several apparatus, to be placed in conspicuous | places near the harbor ; and the citizens of Montreal whose occupations lead them in the vicinity of the river, to join the Society, and to be instructed in the use of the apparatus and the other means employed to resuscitate the drowned (every member of the Water-Police should be taught the use of the instruments).I am certain that it only requires a subscription list to be opened to procure ample funds to purchase three or four sets of apparatus; and every philanthropic individual will feel pleasure in joining the Society.I remain yours, Hum Anitas.1st proceeding to the West from the Ottawa and Rideau Canal route to that of the St.Lawrence, but few Emigrants have proceeded during late years to that section of the country; consequently, Labourers are now much wanted, and the rates of wages have considerably increased. The lumber trade of the Ottawa, which annually requires from 25,000 to 30,000 men, is now, owing to the increased demand for that great staple of the country, about to be much extended ; and as almost all those who transact this business are largely engaged in farming, a most fa- ¦ vourable opportunity is now offered to Emigrants to proceed to that section of the country : good active men will get, the first year, from £2 to £3 per month with their board ; and, after they have become acquainted with the work of the country and acquired the necessary skill, they will be competent to earn the highest wages, from £3 10s.to £4 per month, or from £35 to £40 per annum.Crown Lands, and those belonging to private individuals, can be obtained on more reasonable terms than in any other section of the Province; and farmers receive the highest cash prices for all the surplus produce they may have to dispose
