For the fifth time in the course of a twelve-month the long monumental list of killed and wounded is inscribed on our pages.Alma, Bataklava, Inkermann, the fatal 18th of June, and now Sebastopol itself, are glorious, but dea-ly-pare based titles. The British forces who took part in the last successful assault were buta small portion af the whole allied army engaged in it, yet they have lost 26 officers killed, 113 officers wounded, and, it is said, near 2,000 altogether, kilted and wounded, of all ranks. The total loss' of the allies is said to be no less than 15,000 killed and wounded'.It is scarcely possible to hear so terrible au announcement without asking, as it one had never asked before,—Isit possible thgt anything can justify so terrible a sacrificd? What point of honour, what political consideration what remote prospect of advantage, or precaution of self-defence is worth tbemutualslaughter and mutilation of thirty or forty thousand men? There are persons—nay, there are Governments and nations—that are prepared with their answer, and it is, that it is better to submit to some trifling modification of liberty and imaginary diminution of honour that perish miserably in a ditch, or languish, still more miserably, a cripple, a burden, a spectacle, a nuisance to society;'without enjoyment, power, oneven consideration. It is enough to reply that this is not tho answer of Englishmen. It is notour nature, nor have we been bred to it.Could ive suppose ourselves in any way making such a decision we should never cease to repent it, and every day purchased at the cost of such submission would be so much more misery. In honour, as in religion, we pre-xer freedom and self-respect, though with wounds and broken health, to comfortable degradation or exile.¦ We are fortified against tbe misgivings that weak nature may suggest at the thought of these lamentable losses aud sufferings. No price is too; great for honour. This , is felt not merely , as a public consideration, but still more deeply! and tenderly as the precious balm of private sorrow. We will venture to say that there is not one parent, one brother, one child of an age to appreciate honour-'—we could almost add, one | William Quinn, Supervisor.Comparative Statement of Arrivals and Tonnage ht this Port, in the years 1864 and 1855, to the 24i,h Oct, is as follows :— 1854.1101 Vessels.489,971 Tons.1355.533 “ 271,108 “ Less this year;.568 208,963 Comparative Statement of arrivals and tonnage from the Lower Ports, in 1.804 and 1855, up to the 1st October in each year:— 1854 .121 Vessels.9512 Tons.1855 .128 “ 10700 “ More this year.7 1118 Imports Toy tlie Clinmplain & St.Lawrence .ttw-ilroad.October 2.Anderson, Evans & co 3 bxs screws ; Crathern k Caverhill 1 do do ; W R Hibbard 6 brls alcohol ; Knapp k Holmes 69 csts 1031 hf do 10 cs 22 bdls catties tea 150 bags coffee ; Lymans, Savage k co 2 bxs drugs; K& A Miller 1 do ink; Nelson k Butters 15 bdls 1-g-framts ; H Routh k co 30 bis hemp 30 brls tar ; James Hodges 2 bxs ; O H Cross 2 bids crackers ; Perrier k co 1 bx ; Brown, Hibbard, Brown & co 29 bgs 1 lump India rubber ; C Birch 1 piano ; Jacob Aaron k co 10 cs paintings.Imports Ly t.lae Laeliiiic Lftiial- October 1.Per Barge OAK :—Noad Bros 11790 bushels wheat.Oct.2.Per B.EMPIRE!
