a derangement of tha action of the heart, which, like most others sim< lany artiicted, I supposed to_ be an orgunic di’' sease, and having seen the Oxygenated Bitter» highly recommended for use the bitten place, without knowing whether it would or not afford the least relie?but surprising as it may seem, the poison was soon observed to exclude from the wound, and 1ft five or ten minutes the young man fell asleep, 0n tirely free from pain, or any effect from the bite except the flesh wound, which healed very soar and the young man was able to prosecute bis business without further delay.By giving publicity to this fact in yonr pamphlets designed for southern and western disti: billion, and such countries as poisonous reptiles more or less abound, it, might serve the cause or circumstances arising ont of the establishment of the Ocean Steamers and the deepening of Lake St.Peter, is the attention which has suddenly been turned towards our route by the commercial men of the West, and especially of Chicago. For a long conrse of years there was a certain silence with respect to the St.Lawrence which seemed greatly akin to contempt. We do not, of course, mean personal contempt ; but contempt of the idea that any advantages could ever be afforded in this direction, which could attract their trade through our waters. It was ail very well to talk about this being the natural channel of trade.— So it was when trade consisted in exchanging skins for Brumagen muskets, and when the commercial fleet was a number of bark canoes which must be unloaded at each portage and carried to the other side of the rapids. The nature of trade is to follow the best, that is the cheapest course, and the natural channel is determined accordingly. But the movements that we speak of are of a kind to indicate that the channel which was originally the natural one, is to become so again, and that for a commerce which bids fair to be the most considerable of any in the world, We scarcely take np a newspaper from the Michigan cities, especially from those situated on the lake of that name, without noticing some example of the manner in which the eyes of the people in those regions are now turned to our route. We find in the same article mention made of the sailing of the Dean Richmond from Chicago to Liverpool, for the purpose, as it is hoped, of establishing a direct traffic, without breaking bulk, between the two ports ; and of the deepening of Lake St.Peter, as evidenced by the passage of a large loaded vessel, and again of self-congratulations on the success of the Canadian steamers, which show that a personal interest is taken in the triumph of those vessels.Indeed, our Chicago friends are, we are happy to say, determined to taire us by storm. They must have a Ship Canal from Lake Huron through the Valley of the Ottawa to Montreal, or one from Lake Sitneoe to Toronto, or, if possible, both. Both, or either, would no doubt conduce greatly to the increase of the vessels and goods coming to our wharves. It may he said, indeed, that vessels like the Dean Richmond will, if they succeed, not come to our wharves. We have no fears of any failure of trade from such a cause.Only give us plenty of honest commerce on our waters, and there is no reason to fear that we shall lose our fair share of what is going. The natural and artificial facilities for doing business at this point arc too considerable to give us any reason for apprehension on that score. But we confess that we hardly anticipate the success of the through voyage, though we behold the attempt, not only without jealousy ; font satisfied that it will do good. The Lake, Canal, and River navigation is so widely different from that of the ocean, that, wo do not believe when all possible facilities for transhipment have been afforded, there will be any econo, my in sending the same vessel over the Atlantic which descends by the Lake and Rivers. In the meantime, the fact of the attempt being made, ought to inspire those interested in the trade of Montreal to reflect upon the importance of introducing every kind of apparatus which may tend to shorten the time and diminish the necessary expense for loading and discharging in our harbor, At present, steam has not been applied to that purpose ; yet there is little doubt that manual labor may bo superseded in many way?.— This was a matter of comparatively little consequence with sailing vessels: it is one of the very greatest consequence, when we are dealing with the enormous capitals employed in steam ves sels they are too expensive tools to be allowed io be idle.Look at what we learn on this subject from the Chicago Democrat: — The schooner AH,air, was loaded at the spa-cions elevators of Messrs.Gibbs, Griffin & Co.of that city. The cargo of the “Altair,” 18,000 bushels of corn, was drawn from the bins, elevated, weighed and discharged into the hold of the vessel in two hours and a quarter. The whole rime consumed from the time of putting the cargo on board until the hatches were finally closed and the vessel ready for sea.was only two hours and three-quarters.This is notan isolated case, as the same thing has been done in nearly or quite as short u time before, and can be «gain.Another matter of deep concern to merchants is the rate of iusuiauee, which ought, surely, to be very much reduced upon risks by steam-ves-els.There may have been reasons why a large increase of premium should be demanded upon tailing vessels; but for steamers the St.Law-> uce navigation presents no dangers which can properly account tor the great prices demanded, a ad which go so far to lesson the results that n ight be fairly anticipated from the many efforts being made to secure our share of the trade of the West Soddeh Death.—Mr.Joseph Humphry, aged f> J, who had been ailing only for a short time previously, expired rather suddenly at his lodgings, No.25 Sanguiaet Street. It appears that the deceased acted in the capacity of book-Peeper to Mr.Mnsaon, merchant, of Notre Dame Street, for about seven years;—that on last Sotarday night deceased left Mr.Mussen’s about half-past eight o’clock, in his usual good health; ou Sunday evening he complained of slight indisposition ; and on Monday morning, not feeling better, he remained in bed all day, when, about sis o’clock in the evening, medical assistance was procured, and it was considered that his case was not of a serious character. The lady of the house on stone, and being thus incorporated, they become one body, and cannot be again separated. This enables them to resist the action of oils and acids [which stain and de face ordinary marbles] and also to withstand n greater degree of heat. They have six times the strength of marble and their appearance is superior.Architects, Builders and others are invited to call and examine these articles at 134j4
