celebrated Oculists of Europe and other countries, who have recommended them as the most suitable and useful for the Eye, of which fact all purchasers can satisfy themselves personally. Those Glasses correspond so thoroughly with the curve of the Eye, that the light coming from all directions is refracted fully as strongly as through thé centre of the glass. This allows persons of weak sight to 8,; 134 tion or entirely completed. Before entering upon details, however, we may remark, that the whole style of the buildings in Montreal has, of late years, undergone a complete revolution.Wooden erections have entirely disappeared, even in the Suburbs, so that it seems for once that a municipal by-law has been cheerfully obeyed, almost by the entire popolution. But that is not all. With the banishment of wood an air of great and permanent comfort has been given to the residences intended even for the less wealthy portions of the community ; and the respectable mechanic all over the city basa tight, brick lodging, with the openings for windows and doors, well protected from the sun in summer and cold in winter by outer blinds or double windows, according to the necessity of the season. In the superior classes of dwelling houses still greater improvements are noticeable.Besides recent additions to the large detached family residences of the villa kind, which have lately greatly multiplied, we see in several places rows of three story residences.— These are generally fitted up with every convenience, especially with bath rooms.Perhaps the buildings intended for the purposes of wholesale and retail commerce are even more remarkable, taken as a whole, than those intended for private residences. There have been, heretofoie, blocks of warehouses equal to the average of the new ones, which are going up ; but, there has never been a time when so many of this description of buildings have been in course of erection, and all of them remarkable not only for their substantial appearance, but for that kind of beauty which belongs to their style and their adaptation to the intended purpose. They remind one of the remark of the Yankee tourist who, giving a Toronto man his impressions of the two cities, guessed Montreal looked as if it were paid for. While mentioning these buildings, we are reminded of the recent loss of their forerunner, known as Logans stores, and we take the opportunity of suggesting that it would be a good deed, on the part of whoever will do it, to invent a new material for the wooden cornice, which now is commonly to be seen running under the eaves of our houses and stores. It was once a custom to build stone houses at great cost, and then put upon them a shingled roof, to insure their destruction by fire.It was the old adage of “ spoiling a ship for a ha’p’orth of tar” ; for when a proprietor had gone to tire expense of a stone edifice it was not worth while to expose the whole property for the difference between a wooden and an incombustible roof. How much less is it worth while for Hie sake of the cornice, which is undoubtedly, in many cases, the cause of buildings taking lire.We now proceed to catalogue, and where necessary, to describe the new buildings of Montreal ; the list, including all houses, for which lines have been applied for at the City Hall since last November, with only an occasional notice of other improve ments. There will no doubt be many omissions in this account, arising out of the many places to be visited and persons to be seen.We have have made it as perfect as we- cthlld. We have neglected many small and, perhaps siderable buildings.ST.ANNE’S WARD.ST.GEORGE’S STREET.Paige & Co.— These gentlemen who have been so successful as builders of agricultural machines, have, by the constant growth of their business, found it necessary to enlarge their establishment, and they have therefore just completed a set of workships, which will add very materially to their capacity for meeting the demands of their customers. The buildings are of three stories, with a high pitched gravel roof, and will cost we presume, a couple of thousand pounds.Builder : Mr.V.Cassant.In the same street are two neatly built brick buildings, also just completed.Builder : Mr.V.Cassant.PRINCE’S STREET.Mr.D.Hood.— This gentleman has extension of their premises another proof of the energy and en-terprize of our business men, and the manner in which that energy and enterprize are rewarded. The Messrs.Mathewson’s have made to their old premises on Inspector Street, a large brick addition, so that the buildings now extend quite over the creek to College Street. The new part of the building is like the rest, of brick, three
