many of our most distinguished citizens.His fame as a practical operator for diseases of the feet is very enviable ; and in addition to the many laurels wnich he is so justly entitled to, and which have been so lavishly bestowed on him in other cities.Our citizens have experienced his skill—many of them having been relieved of torture by his wonderful process of eradicating those diseases, and have honorably borne testimony to bis ability, so that his celebrity is now greater than ever.All suffering from corns should read his advertisement in another column.may be obtained Office.Montreal, June 25, W.SHANLY, Chief Engineer and General Manager.1858. 150 IMPORTS, THE END.The culprits having been thus engaged for several moments, the upper platform of the scaffold was left alone to them and the hangman.The crowd looked on with averted eyes —a stillness crept over the vast assemblage— every voice was hushed, every heart heaved heavily—a moment more, the preconcerted signal is given, the sudden click of a loosened bolt and the creaking sound of opening boards strike upon the ears of the hushed multitude— the trap door has fallen, there is an instantaneous descent, the unhappy beings disappear, and in another instance two human bodies oscillate at the end of the fatal cord, and Jean Bte.Desforge, fell and never gave a struggle.The female culprit continued to give indications of existence five minutes afterwards; this, however, was owing to something defective in adjustment of the knot ; but notwithstanding, it seemed from medical testimony,and Drs.Graik, Beaubien, Trudell and Boyer were on the scaffold, that though Desforges became unconscious the moment he dropped, yet his life was not extinct for twelve minutes and a half afterwards.After the executioner had performed his office he descended from the platform and having reached the ground secluded himself from observation by walking under the scaffold and leaning, with his back to all observers, against a post which supported it.After the bodies had been suspended for an hour they were cut down by tbe executioner, and removed into the jail, from whence, we understand, they will be taken this day, Saturday, and buried by the direction of the Seminary.After this, the last act of the tragedy had been concluded, the crowd outside began to disperse, and in less than an hour after had all disappeared.CORRESPONDENCE.To the Editor of the Montreal Herald.Sir,—The magnificent George IV.had, among other luxuries, a band, and the band-master, with an eye to the picturesque, wished to have a couple of big niggers for the bass-drum and cymbals ; to which the king objected.One day the band appeared with two very swarthy men bearing these instruments.“ Ah 1” said the monarch, “ I see they are determined to reconcile me to the blacks—by degrees.” So with the Lager Beer, which an article, copied into your paper, declares to contain only three per cent, of alcohol, and worthy to be patronized by supporters of the temperance cause.Tem-petance people, instead of encouraging its introduction, can only regard this three per cent, as a preliminary to accustom people, especially the young, to the use of alcohol in a more concentrated form.This beer, as drunk, may be as intoxicating as some other spirituous drinks.Brandy may contain fifty per cent, of alcohol, but what is the per centage in weak brandy and water ?There would be no trouble with any diluted alcohol, were it not that its use creates an appetite for increased strength and quality, and therefore temperance men would rather not see people accustomed to strong drink—by degrees—with Lager Beer.T.S.B.Montreal, 23d June, 1858.Per giving value for value to the public ; and marking the selling prices on every article, it has won its present popularity on its own merits.While at this large Store a Gentleman can have a full suit of Fine Broad Cloth for $9, $12 or $20, and the fit guarranteed, it is not surprising to see numbers of Gentlemen now patronising the St.Lawrence Main Street in preference to the more aristocratic but more costly walks of our city.If this Store should ever move Us Trade a little more central, we have little doubt, but that it would take a stand which would compare favorably with some of the oldest and most opulent Houses in Montreal.June 25. 149 By the Late Hugh Miller.TUST Published, and for Sale by the Sub-J scriber— The Cruise of the Betsey ;
