Montreal Herald we need say but little, If we are an ^Hx-Proleslant” it is ungenerous upon his part, for him to reproach us with that which was but an accident of our birth. He too, by birth, by nature, and before baptism, was, according to the Catechism of the Protestant Church of England, an enemy of God, the object of His aversion, and consequently a child of the devil. This was not his fault, but the fault of onr common parents ; and it would not be fair or generous on our part, for us to speak habitually of the editor of the Montreal Herald, as of an “J£±-C/iild of the Devil.''— Yet, the said editor is every whit as responsible for the original sin of Adam and Eve, as we are for the apostacy from the Catholic Faith of our immediate ancestors. That he was born a Protestant is a misfortune with which it is most ungenerous to tax any man ; and if, in the fact of our being so born, the Herald pretends to find any good reason for condemning us because of our return to the Church from whence our forefathers apostatised, we would remind him, that the same logical process would, if.strictly applied, be conclusive against baptism ; seeing that no one is born a Christian, or is a child of God by nature, or can become so except through baptism ; and that, according to the Herald's logic, every one should remain in the condition into which he was born, that is to say, a “ Child of the Devil.” But this “ Ex-Child of the Devil,” the editor of the Montreal Herald, is not content with reproaching us with our “Ex-Protestantism," —which though true, is ungenerous—but he must needs accuse us of “ error in our facts," and with want of knowledge. This, in so far as the facts adduced in our last issue are concerned, is both false and ungenerous. Now, it appears to us^that were we to search the fyles of the True Witness, since its first rabid attack alike upon the Faith of its Editor’s “ immediate ancestors” (who, most assuredly and to our personal knowledge, were no “apostates from the Catholic Faith,” whatever his more remote ancestors may have been,) and upon the land of his birth, we could nowhere find a more striking example of the general character of our contemporary's facts and arguments than he supplies us with in the above extract. His fact is, that all unbaptised babes are “ Children of the Devil,” and, consequently, that all baptised Christians—and, specially, the editor of the Montreal Herald—are “ Ex-Children of the Devil.” His argument is, that as the unbaptised infant cannot be held responsible for its Satanic paternity, therefore the adult convert to Romanism should not be held responsible for abandoning the Faith of his fathers.Even were he correct in his fact— which we cannot for one moment admit—his argument, based upon that fact, is a palpable and ridiculous non-sequitur.While we feelingly appreciate the politeness of our contemporary’s preposition — being scarcely entitled to it from one, who, we may be mistaken but, we suppose, would hardly admit the validity of our baptism,—we are really unable to discover anything ungenerous in our calling a convert to Roman Catholicism an Ex-Protestant—more especially in connection with what we viewed as his “ zeal without knowledge” in the advocacy of his newly-adopted Faith. For the rest, although the zeal of converts does, proverbially, burn fiercely at first, it is, as proverbially, short-lived and evanescant. We live in the hope of seeing every convert from Protestantism, like poor Jean Jacques, struggling, and with better claims and better success, for readmission to the church of his “ immediate ancestors”—i.e.of his “ parents in the flesh.” himself at her brother's lodging. The coroner here observed that the strike was a most inhuman contest between master and man, involving helpless families in the direst destitution and misery.George Lock, son of the deceased, said his father called on him at No.16 Little Earl Street, Seven Dials, on Saturday evening, and appeared very strange in his manner. He soon became insensible, when Mr.Bennet, surgeon of St.Giles’ Workhouse, was sent for, and found that he was suffering from the effects of a narcotic poison.Antidotes were administered and the stomach pump used, but the deceased rapidly sunk, and died about four o’clock on Sunday morning. Two bottles, which had contained laudanum, were found upon his person, also a piece of paper, upon which was written, “ What Cato did, and Addison approved of, must be right.God protect my unfortunate family.” Verdict—“ Temporary insanity.’’ The Timès, after reviewing the correspondence on the Chinese question, considers the whole matter resolves itself into the question of the sufficiency or insufficiency of our squadron for the attack. The next Chinese expedition must be a very different one from the last ; but Lord J.Russell not improperly throws a protecting shield over the past, and does not visit our officers, civil or naval, too severely for a doubtfnl step which turned out in the event a mistake. The result of experiments with Armstrong’s guns upon iron-sided ships led to the decided belief that vessels of that class will be entirely useless when opposed to the new cannon. The bounty for enlistment in the Royal Engineers is to be raised from £3 to at least doable that amount.CoMPUETIOK OF THE GbAKI) TRUNK RAILWAY.,—It iyijl be seen by the advertisement that, on and after the 7th proximo, this road will be continuously opened for through traffic of every description from Quebec and Portland to Detroit, where it connects with lines extending to every section of the great West. When the Victoria Bridge is completed—a great fact which will, it is confidently anticipated, be realized before the closing of the navigation— goods and produce dispatched from St.Louis, Cincinnati and Chicago, by this route, will reach the seaboard, with but one transhipment —or rather transcarment.See advertisement.Thk Holy Land.—We would invite the attention of our readers to Mr.Love’s advertisement of his lectures on the Holy Land. Our contemporary the QuebecChronicle, thus, favourably speaks of Mr.Love’s lecture. The amount of general information with regard to matters contained in these interesting lectures, can hardly be over-rated, but the illustrations and explanations given in reference to events and customs described, or casually alluded to in Scripture, are in some aspects invaluable. There never will, in all probability, such another opportunity occur in Quebeo.Persons of all ages, may profitably attend, and listen to the experienced traveller, and lecturer.Parents should not let their children miss this occasion of having their minds opened on topics so important. The Railway Terminus.—We are happy to learn that it is definitely decided by the Directors of the Grand Trank Railway to bring tùe track into town at the earliest practicable date, and to erect a town station,&c., so soon as the best site can be finally determined, and the necessary land secured. We hope that such co-operation as the City Council can give will be readily given, even if it should involve a moderate outlay. This hopeful result of the negotiations is, we believe, m a great degree, due to the earnest efforts of one of the city members—the only eity member so far as influence in public affairs goes, —the Hon.John Rose.We cut the above from Saturday’s Gazette, and, we may say, lhat a more delicious specimen of organic bunkum we have rarely encountered, even in our contemporary’s columns. What is the “ hopeful result” which the Gazette claims as being due to the “ earnest efforts” of our magnanimous “ only eity member so far as influence in publie affairs goes?” Why that, as Mr.Blackwell has again and again stated, almost fiercely resenting even the suspicion of a doubt on the subject, that we should have our City Terminus “so soon as the best site can be finally determined and the necessary land secured." As to this paltry attempt to puff the Hon.Mr.John Rose, in connection with this matter, at the expense of gentlemen, who have, for weeks past, been devotiu'g their earnest efforts to attain the desired object, it is really, under all the circumstances of the case, little short o^ impudence. For the rest, we have made enquiries, and can assure our readers, that no new step or resolution whatever, has been adopted, by Mr.Blackwell or the Directors, in connection with this matter of our City Terminus, but that, “so soon as the best site can he finally determined, and the necessary land secured,” the citizens have now, as they have long had, the solemn assurance of Mr.Blackwell that the railway track will be brought into town, and the station be built—and furthermore, that this result is in no respset due to the “earnest efforts” of the Hon.John Rose, but to the conviction, on the part of Mr.Blackwell, and the Directors, that the interest of the road, as well as of the citizens of Montreal, demands the erection of a terminus within the city limits.NEWS “Ëurcpa’* anil «United Kingdom.’-’ Zeal Without Knowledsh of Converts.— We lately, under the above heading, said a few words in allusion to some three or four columns devoted by the Ex-Protestant editor of the True Witness to prove that crime and immorality prevailed to a much greater extent in Protestant than in Catholic countries. We availed ourselves of the occasion to quote the opinions, not as to the comparative but the absolute morality of Protestant England, of the Count Montalambert, whom we ventured to describe as not only an older but a somewhat abler Catholic writer, and a better authority on the subject iu issue, than the recent convert of the True Witness. We had no intention then, however, and have none now, of arguing the point with our over-zealous contemporary. We told him then, and we repeat it, that his facts, in onr opinion, were erroneous and his reasoning upon them—even supposing them to be correct—still more so.We must, then, decline controversy with our Ex-Protestant Catholic advocate on any such subject as either the positive or comparative vice and immorality of Catholic and Protestant countries. He has his opinion, we have ours ; neither is likely to convince the other, and religious polemies are, according to our views, much more calculated to arouse the passions and prejudices than to convince the reason of either Catholics or Protestants.Indeed, but for the personal appeal of our contemporary, in his two columns of reply to our passing notice of his former articles, which we find in his issue of Friday last, we should have allowed them to pass unnoticed. He says :— The Europe's mail reached town, from Boston, on Saturday afternoon, but was anticipated by that by the United Kingdom, which fine screw steamship—Captain Meiklereid—left Glasgow on the same day the Europa left Livex-pool [the 8th instant] and reached Quebec at 2 o’clock, A.M., on Friday morning. This must be considered a fine passage [12 days and a few hours] for the United Kingdom, considering the season. The same steamer made the run home in 10J days.Capt.M.reports having passed about 50 vessels inward-bound between Father Point and Quebec.Passed the City of Quebec and the St.Lawrence, off Kamouraska. We make the following extracts from the papers received :— GREAT BRITAIN.Mr.Disraeli has delivered, before his agricultural friends in Buckinghamshire, the dullest address which could hare been expected to come from him.The only notable point in it is his condemnation of critics ; just as if he were not purely a critic himself! Mr.Robert Stephenson is somewhat better to-day, (8th inst.,) and the physicians think more favourably of the case, without pronouncing the patient out of danger.Sir George Grey, the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, was recalled by the Derby Government, owing to some dispute—the appointment of a Mr.Cole to a lucrative office.Mr.Cole was a nominee of the Government, and Sir George did not think him fit for the place.Immediately upon the recal being known, all classes at the Cape joined in entreating the restoration of Sir George ; and the merchants here who have dealings with the colony were forward to support their prayer. The native petitions are a sort ot curiosity in literature but they afford as fine a testimony as was ever rendered to the effect of the humane, principled, and Christian policy which Sir George has pursued. The Duke of Newcastle has restored him ; and Sir George, who came home by the last steamer, will likely go out again by the next. The floating battery, Trusty, passed Sheerness on Saturday, after an experiment against her plates, with 55 cwt.gnn and conical shots. The fire ranged from 400 to 200 yards. The result has been that the broadside plates have been broken to pieces. The shots have often penetrated through her broadside ; shot with the greatest accuracy of fire, they were sent into an open port and went through the timber materials on the other side, gliding over and breaking the plates to pieces.THE EFFECTS OF THE STRIKE.On Wednesday evening, October 5, a long inquiry took place at the King’s Arms, Castle Street, Long Acre, London, before Mr.Wakley, on the body of Daniel Lock, aged 52, a plasterer, who had committed suicide under the following circumstances t—Eliza Lock, a daughter of the deceased, deposed that before the strike her father was earning 30s., weekly at his trade. He was a society man at only 2s.G1 a week, and the family having been reduced to destitution, their position preyed upon his mind.On been submitted to the Emperor ; one for sending out 10,000 men, including 3,000 at present in Oohin China ; the other for despatching no Ises than 20,000.Whatever may be the decision of the Emperor it is understood that a portion ot the force will embark at Marseilles for Egypt, and be conveyed to their destination in British transports. The speech of the Emperor of the French at Bordeaux, where he is to arrive on the 10th instant, is anxiously looked for, both in France and in this country, as it is understood he will eliminate therein his views and intentions on several important topics, more especially on the Italian question, the expedition to China, and his political relations with Great Britain.General Changarnier has arrived from exile, and is now in Paris, where in 1850 he told the masterpiece of his genius; it is called the “Legend of the Ages,” and professes to take a view of human life from all its aspects, movements, and progress, in a series of legendary cantos, forming a “ Drama of Creation enlightened by the face of the Creator.” At the meeting of the Academy of Fine Arts on Saturday last, M.Halevy—the celebrated the composer and perpetual secretary of the academy—read an “Eloge” of the late Adolphe Adam, which was listentdjto with great interest. This eminent composer, so recently cut off, is best known beyond his own country by his operas of “Postillion de Longjumeau” and the “Chalet,” and was long a great favovritein Paris. He was the pupil and friend of Boieldieu and produced in his time an symptoms of restiveness in the Venetian Territory. At Padua the celebration of the anniversary of the death of Manin had led to arrest and other severe measures. In a subordinate grade among the volunteers, under General Fanti, is enrolled the son of Count Peregrino Rossi, Prime Minister at Rome in 1847.He bad a year ago resigned the pension allowed him by the Roman Exchequer, and has already fought under Garibaldi. At his age his father had been exiled from the Romagna as a rebel, and was driven to Geneva, where this Italian volunteer was born.As to the hubbub made in “pastorals” about the withdrawal of Romagna from the glebe lands of the Roman See, that territory was not given in this century by a grant of King Pepin, or Charlemagne, or still less by Constantine, but by “gentleman” George the Fourth and one Robert Stuart, Earl Castlereagh, in 1815, much to the displeasure of Austria, and in spite of the treaty of Tolentino, by which Pins VI.solemnly gave it back to France last century, r atified in the present century by PiusYII.[1806].Both of these Popes had taken the same coronation oath as the present occupant of that semithrone, who comes out in print to-day with an address to the cardinals dwelling on this oath as an eternal obstacle to reform of any sort among his unfortunate lieges, ASSASSINATION Off COUNT ANVILI AT PARMA.Paris, Friday, Oct.7.—The following telegram, dated October 6th, has been received here from Parma :—A horrible occurrence took place yesterday evening.Count Anvili, formerly colonel of the troops of Parma, and held in detestation by the people, was passing through Parma on his way to Plaisance, but was recognised at the railway station and arrested. The populace, informed of his arrest, broke open the barracks of the gendarmerie whore he was confined, and, having seized the unfortunate Count, he was dragged through the city, receiving blows on all sides. His hands were fastened together with a cord, and he was thus pulled through the streets until he arrived opposite a café that he was in the habit of frequenting, where, whilst he was still alive, his head was cut off, and then carried in triumph to the Grand Place, where it was placed on the top of a column. The cries of joy of the people increased the terror of ihe situation.— The National Guard and the troops were called out, but arrived when all was over.At nine o’clock in the evening quiet again reigned in the city, and the dead body of Count Anvili was conveyed to the hospital. The city was being traversed by patrols.ALGIERS.Advices from Algiers state that the departure of the troops from Oran continues. One column, assembled at Sebdon, will operate on the South. The Moorish troops on the frontiers are expecting reinforcements of black cavalry. There is some agitation among the tribes, especially ai Riaret, but the assemblage of troops prevents any suspected outbreak.Marseilles, Oct.5.—The French troops concentrated on the frontiers of Morocco—amount to about 15,000 men, under the command of General Martimprey, and it is said that operations will not be confined to the protection ot the frontiers of Algeria, but that they will occupy a portion of the territory of Morocco, of which Ouchda is the centre, and from which point excursions by the Moors .shave taken place.THE CONGRESS.The Paris correspondence of the Ost Deutsche Post, after asserting that the peace will be shortly signed at Zurich, and that this event will be soon followed by the convocation of a European Congress, continues as follows :— Austria would prefer a Conference to a Congress, which would necessitate the absence of the principal Ministers from the usual centres of their activity, while a conference might be managed by inferior persons. In Austria the Minister for Foreign Affairs is at the same time President of the Council and he could never absent himself from Vienna. The objections of the Austrian Cabinet have been considered valid in Paris, and the words “ Conference” or “Congress” will be used,so as to avoid the difficulty.Austria wishes that in addition to the five Great Powers, Spain, Portugal, and Sweden, who took part in the Congress of Vienna, may also have a voice in the approaching diplomatic reunion, whether it be called a Conference or Congress. On this point, also, the Cabinet of the Tuileries raises no kind of objection.Furthermore, adds the Ost Deutsche Post, the Italian question is in a great measure a Catholic question, and it is right that Spain and Portugal, eminently Catholic Powers, should have a voice in its settlement.Austria wishes also, that before a Conference or Congress assembles, a plan of operation should be distinctly laid down. The Hardware Trade are reminded that the unreserved sale of Valuable Stock, at the Stores No.242 St.Paul street, by A.Bryson & Go., will be continued this afternoon, at 2
