in fact, it will be a constant source of expense. In large cities like Boston and New York the telegraph may be very ser viceable, but in our small city there is no necessity for it.Why should our already over-taxed rate-payers be burthened with an additional load? When a drain is wanted, or a few holes in a crowded thoroughfare require filling up, the excuse is no funds. Our streets are in a shameful state of dilapidation, yet we have borne this grievance, along with numberless others, because we supposed our City Fathers were economising.Yours, TAXPAYER.Montreal, Oct.8, 1861.LAW INTELLIGENCE.COURT captain do not, as they seem to have done, prevent any one man from acquiring the experience which is necessary to inform her commander respecting her proper trim, and her capacity as a sea-hoat.What has happened would have happened with the same management to any vessel in a greater or less degree, and with the same care as other vessels receive the Great Eastern will be as little subject as they are to disasters of tbe kind of that one which lately befell her.OF QUEEN’S (CROWN SIDE.) BENCH Chief Justice SirL.H.Lafontaine and Hon.Justice Aylwin, Presiding.Extraordinary Romance.—The account of the making way with a great grandchild of Sir Francis Burdett, heir to £14,000 a year, by its father, and its subsequent discovery in a den of thieves and beggars, naked, and covered with sores, filth and vermin, is a romance which, if it purported to be such, would be thought almost iucredible. It will doubtless be read with the greatest interest.Till further information, however, we shall entertain some doubts if all the facts have been made public.Even the supposed object of gaining money by making away with the child was so remote, and contingent on so many circumstances, that it seems insufficient to account for the act.Besides, how did the mother come to agree to the first steps of the plot ?The Western Indians and the Civil War.— Among those who, without any fault of their own, are likely to be great sufferers by the present war in the United States, are the Western Indians.Among these the Cherokees hold a conspicuous place for civilization, and an established polity.Whether from inclination, which, as slaveholders, they may be supposed to have towards the South, or from the coustraint to which they were exposed by their position, they have, against the strongly expressed views of their Chief, Jno.Ross, at length been led to take up arms on that side of the quarrel. There is a rumour that Ross has since taken another course, and is in arms for the Union ; but that is very improbable, and it may he taken for granted that 1200 or a couple of thousand Cherokees will be In arms for the South. At the best—in case cf ihe success of the South—the people will lose in blood and money. They will besides lose the annuity granted them by the Federal Government, of which $33,000, still lying at their credit, has been already confiscated. And in case of a Northern success, their conduct will afford an excuse, which will be only too greedily taken advantage of, to oust them from their present lands. The Episcopal Church of New York and the Civil WaR.—At a recent convention of the Episcopal Church in New York a resolution was offered setting forth that by the articles of the Church the use of the homilies was only suspended till they could be revised, and requesting the Bishop to cause the révisai of the homily against rebellion, as one containing 11 godly and wholesome doctrine.” This resolution was moved by Mr.Jay, and supported by some of the most eminent of the clergy and laity, including the Hon.Mr.Hoffman ; but was, nevertheless, rejected, without being allowed to come to a vote.A Deserter. We learn from the Niagara Mail that color serjeant Underwood, of the Royal Canadian Rifles—(well known in this city)— deserted from the Company stationed in Niagara on Saturday morning, 28th nit.He had in his possession £100, with which he was intrusted to pay the men of the company that day.It is said he left about four o’clock in the morning under pretext of" going out mushrooming.” He leaves a wife and five children behind. No reason can be assigned for thus leaving his regiment his time being up in about five or six months, and having always conducted himself in an upright, gentlemanly manner. The prevailing opinion seems to be that great inducements were offered him “ on the other side." Ship “Shandon.”—This fine vessel has just armed in port, being her third voyage from Glasgow this season. On reference to the books of the Trinity House, we find that the Shandon is the first sailing vessel that has ever made three trips in one season from any port in Great Britain to Montreal. Is the Great Eastern a Failure ?—This is a question which, on many accounts, deserves to be canvassed with interest. We need not specify reasons which suggest themselves at once, but proceed to say a few words to show why the disaster which this great ship has experienced may be supposed to have arisen from accidental circumstances, which in no way prove her to be incapable of the service expected of her.It is certain that the character which she had obtained, both by prima facie reasoning, and as a consequence of her successful performances, has been lost for the moment, and that it will be necessary to make the causes of the late disaster comprehended, and to show that they are not only capable of being nded, but have been really ended before confidence can be restored to the travelling public. It has been supposed that the £ Montreal adopt the usual style of exaggeration when I say that Mrs.Hill is a lady possessed of rare personal attractions.A fine commanding figure—an exquisitely formed bust, surmounted by a neck that might be chosen for a model, and a head small and most gracefully set on, giving to her figure, which is tall, slight and graceful, an air of elegance that is rarely equalled and could not be surpassed. Her waist, slight and rounded as if turned in a lathe, contrasts exquisitely with her broad, well-covered shoulders, and her light, elastic, yet firm and assured step, indicate that perfection of form and symmetry which constitutes in most minds the beau ideal of the female figure. To your lady readers, I may say that Mrs.Hill dresses with great taste and neatness, combined with simplicity. So far as I could judge by appearance, she does not deform her fine figure by slays, and the result is an ease and grace which art would in vain seek to imitate. When I say that she has very small hands and feet—the latter possessing the smallness of the Chinese, with the high arch well-turned ankle, and finely pointed toes, so indicative of Norman blood—I have completed, as nearly as a pen and ink sketch can, a description of as perfect a figure as an artist could look upon.“ Before I leave Mrs.Hill I may say that I have seen the shawl which this afflicted mother so mysteriously prized, and to which she in a great measure owes the confident assurance that tells her with even more of certainty than a mother’s instinct that her lost one is found. It is one of those large muffling plaid shawls which are now so much used by tourists. It has plainly seen much service, and been subjected to some rough usage.Wnat secret history hangs around it that caused Mrs.Hill to value it so highly I have not ascertained, but possibly it may have been her companion in bygone and happy hours.“ Having said so much of Mrs.Hill, I will add a few particulars of Mr.Richard G.Hill.I have already stated that he is not at all related to Mr.Guinness, the eminent brewer, though I believe he is allied to some parties connected with the distant branches of the
