Mansonville celebrates Mavis The Scoop - Page 3 75 CENTS + TAXES Strange behaviour in Magog Record Staff At around 8 p.m.Monday evening Memphremagog police received a call about a man who was going door to door begging for money. Some people had been threatened by the same man and he gave a methamphet-amine tablet to a woman and to 14-year-old girl. The 41-year old suspect from Magog, known to police, was arrested and released on a promise to appear with certain conditions. He could be accused of uttering threats and drug trafficking.Later in the evening at around 10:30, police were called to check the condition of a man who was exhibiting strange and aggressive behaviour at a motel in Orford Township. At the wheel of his vehicle, the man fled police but later he surrendered. The 32 year old Sherbrooke man now faces charges of fleeing police, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, mischief, possession of methamphetamine, and breach of probation. As he appeared to be in some mental distress, he was taken to the psychiatric ward for observation and will appear later by way of summons.Flood victims information meeting Thursday The City of Sherbrooke is advising the public that it will be holding an information evening on the general disaster assistance program of the Government of Quebec this Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m.at the Granada Theatre, located at 53 Wellington Street North, Sherbrooke.Organized by the city and the Quebec Ministry of Public Security, the evening will allow victims of last week’s floods to learn the terms of the aid program and get other useful information, mainly connected with public health.Municipal and government representatives will be present to answer questions from victims.RECORD Heather a finalist for BLG Award The voice of the Eastern Tow^shtf-s^ince 1897 PM#0040007682 2 8 AVUnu Mike Hickey - Page 7 Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Champlaût helps local families celebrate the Earth GORDON LAMBIE Many young families gathered for a morning screening of the Disney Nature movie documentary Wings of Life on Tuesday to celebrate Earth Day.By Gordon Lambie A group of nature lovers and young families gathered together at Centennial Theatre on Tuesday morning to celebrate Earth Day with a screening of the Disney Nature documentary Wings of Life. The event, organized by Champlain Regional College Activity Technician Sheila Quinn, featured guest appearances by David Eberts, whose father Jake worked on the film, as well as local environmental specialists Jennifer Downing Bardati and Laura Boisvert-Marsh.“I saw Wings of Life last summer in August at the Eastern Townships Film Festival in Knowlton,” Quinn said, ex- plaining that she immediately wanted to find a way to show it at the college, “then, earlier in the winter, I saw that David Eberts had won Best Documentary for another film at Sundance and he popped back into my mind.” While the event was always meant to be connected with Earth Day, thematically, Quinn admitted that its timing was coincidental and based entirely on the availability of the busy theatre space on the morning in question.Once that was booked, however the idea began to broaden, bringing in the other guests.“I’m really working on community building between Champlain and the greater community of the Townships and beyond,” Quinn said, pointing out that the event was directly promoted to young families in the region on a planning day.Eberts introduced the film to its gathered audience, explaining that his father was Wings of Life’s executive producer, and that the film was the last project his father got to see finished before his death in 2012.The movie focuses on the important role of pollinators such as bees, butterflies, bats and birds in the world, as seen from the perspective of a flower. The film’s director, Louie Schwartzberg, was a good friend of the elder Ebert, and the producer’s son said that the Cont’d on page 3 ST MANOIR An evolving residence FOR SENIORS WWW.MANOIRSTFRANCIS.COM ”All-inclusive "peace of mind formulp! 1 meal a day : included! us.Despite hours of effort to try and save lives, we were only successful in saving one of Lake’s eight puppies that were born two days earlier. How or what happened is still a mystery to us and to vets. The pups, who were all suckling off Lake constantly and never crying, showed no signs of distress or discomfort, but yet succumbed to death on Wednesday, except one female, now named Moon. Many hours were spent trying to revive and save three puppies who showed vitals; although very weak, but all of our efforts were only successful in keeping Moon alive. We are waiting for autopsy results, since this has me so very confused, which should be in this week.Since Moon is showing signs of a bacterial infection somewhere and parasites, everything is pointing to a combination of reasons.A young mom (Lake is only nine months old), who did not get proper nutrition until she got to us three weeks earlier, pups that were born weak (I have never seen pups born skinny as they were) and Lake’s Reggie is five year old.He was abandoned at a farm but ha quickly forgotten his wild bam cat ways and enjoys affection.* JBi___C - T.-Ÿ^rÆ.Alice is four years old.She is pretty laid back and doesn't demand too much attention but she still enjoys her affection.milk not being sufficient.Because they were suckling constantly, it is believed that she was making milk, but not enough and because they were weak, they did not have the energy to yell for food as a normal healthy puppy would. It is also very possible that Lake, who we saved from up North and who never received any vaccines, passed a virus on to the pups through her milk.Definitely not just one reason, but it doesn’t make the pain we all felt last Wednesday morning any easier.Blue Seal was turned in to an emergency room, with Tina, Shannon, Megan, myself, Dylon, and Zackery conducting emergency methods that we know and have used numerous times to save numerous infant animal lives. And without Skyler and Zachary running back and forth with warmed up towels and milk, we never would have been able to save Moon.Since Wednesday, Moon has been staying with me (although the girls take on babysitting duties during the day which is very appreciated). She now is showing much healthier vitals, much healthier than Wednesday morning when she literally died in our hands a handful of times. She drinks her bottle every two hours. She is on antibiotics since she has shown signs of a bacterial infection and in five days she will be old enough to give deworming to since she also shows signs of parasites. For the first time, she will now cry loudly when she is hungry.Something I wish they were all doing, if it was indeed a lack of milk that caused this, and we would have been able to know and intervene before it was too late.Moon is now eight days old, her eyes are slowly starting to open and so are her ears. She drinks a whopping 15mls every two hours, which is really good since at her age, they need 50 mis a day to live. She is not with Lake until I can get the autopsy results. If Lake did have a virus in her milk (young mothers without enough antibodies from proper vaccination can pass a number of viruses to infants.Viruses that don’t affect adult dogs but will affect any infants born to that mother) then I will not be able to put her back, for fear of recontamination. But, if the autopsy comes back negative and parasites and weakness and lack of milk were the factor, then Moon will be reunited with Lake and I will intervene to feed her. However, I will have to watch that she does not try to suckle too much from her mom since it could hurt Lake.Lake is doing well, she was obviously depressed and looked for her babies for the first two days. She has adopted a teddy bear that she carries everywhere with her and she will nudge the teddy closer to her belly to drink. However, she is back to her old self now and eats healthily and is happy to have her people.Fingers crossed that whatever affected her brothers and sisters is behind her and Moon can continue to grow and thrive.f Blossom is about five years old.She was abandoned and sustained numerous injuries that were extremely infected. Her wounds are healing nicely but her heart won’t heal until he finds a real forever home for the rest of her days.Mistro is a one year old Grand Pyranese mix.Very smart and full of affection.Hype is a one year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He is full of energy. For an active family he would be perfect.Bud is 1 1/2 years old.He is a Mastiff mix and is good with other dogs.He is a big strong boy and will take a master that has the strength and discipline needed. This page is provided by Blue Seal - The Animal Nutrition Centre and The Pet Connection.I CN/fo- CENTRE DE WTETON
