From Clydesdales to minnows, and from pancakes to fireworks, it’s all dressed.“It’s a whole town event, and it has been for years,” says Linda Harper McMahon. This is the day that little Bury is really big - the population of 1,100 or so swells to 6,000 or so.McMahon is the secretary of the Bury Athletic Association.Bury’s Canada Day celebration started in 1927, and from the very start, it has always been organized by the Athletic Association. This year, it’s on Friday evening and Saturday, June 27 and 28.“It started as being a big day for sports,” said McMahon.“We had athletes from Montreal and everywhere who used to come. That’s the main thing of the day.” Add to that, food.A parade.Games.Contests.And fireworks.Music is big, too.For both big and little people. The music starts with an amateur hour for children on Friday at 6 p.m.- singing, dancing and other talents. The first prize is a good guitar. And at 9 p.m.is a dance for adults with the country music band Slightly Haggard.Saturday brings more music to dance R0YA1 CANADIAN LEGION Branch #10 Sherbrooke Happy Canada Day! cool aquarium, and each is put into its racing alley. The winning minnow earns its backers a loonie.“It’s a very popular little game for kids,” says McMahon.“Children age 12 and under go into the Park free, so we like to do everything free for them, once they’re in there. They play their minnow game, and they get a little money rather than having to pay.” For adults, entrance is $5 on Friday, $8 on Saturday, or $10 for a two-day pass.Food.St.Paul’s Home is famous for its pancake breakfast.Bury’s Société d’histoire et du patrimoine is famous for its strawberry shortcake. That’s in the Armoury, next to the craft tables. And a salad lunch is to be had at the United Cultural Centre.More sinful stuff is for sale inside the Memorial Park. The parade at noon is a high point. One of the prides of the parade is an eight-horse hitch - George’s Clydesdales. They’re big, very big.Last year, the parade had 13 teams of horses and lots of horseback riders.McMahon organizes the parade.Athletic Association president Joseph Jacklin helps with the horses.“We’ve never had trouble yet with the horses,” says McMahon. She knocks on her wooden table. Then there are the floats, up to 10 of them.More are still welcome, says McMahon.Just call her at 819-872-1123.Last year, 26 antique cars were in the parade. One was almost as old as Canada Day in Bury - it was a 1928 Model A Ford. The parade goes the length of Mdver and Main streets. It takes more than an hour.Spectators line the streets. It’s best to arrive early and bring a folding chair. It’s 10 p.m., time for the grand finale Cont’d on page 3 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com CANADA DAY Thursday, June 26, 2014 Page 3 Bury is big on Canada Day Cont’d from page 2 ^ -w < If* COURTESY BURY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION mm In Bury's Canada Day parade last year was a 1930 Model A Ford, driven by Garnet Morrison.COURTESY BURY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Charlie Brown's Snoopy vs.The Red Baron was the grand prize winner among the floats in last year’s Canada Day parade in Bury.It was created by Margaret James and Judy Gilbert - aka “The Clark Girls" - and their extended families. This is their 30th Canada Day float in as many years.- fireworks.Right there in the park.“They’re very good,” says McMahon.Ben Bourgeois of Bury is in charge of them.“We have a very good group that organizes everything,” she says.“Probably around 90 or 100 people work on the day as volunteers. In the park doing sports, or working at the bar, or helping with the parade, or doing the traffic. The firemen this year are going to be in uniform and are going to help us make sure that people are parked in the right place, for the parade.” Canada Day in Bury costs in the vicinity of $30,000 or more. And the “decent profit” it earns goes right back into the community for sports - projects such as the water park, Family Helen Labrecque Real Estate Broket Cell: 819-572-1070 hlabrecque@sutton.com 819-823-7474 Suttm Groupe Sutton de I'Estrie Agence immobilière Helping you to buy or sell is what we do best! The Record hé\vsrôôrh@sherbrookerecord’.com CANADA DAY Thursday, June 26, 2014 Pages The flag has its secrets RA GARBER hbbBHH |B 1.The Maple Leaf flag goes to Canada Day in Bury in a big way. That was at a Lemonade stand just outside the Memorial Park entrance, in 2012.By Rachel Garber Canada Day, and the red Maple Leaf flag is everywhere you look. And like the day itself, there can be a tendency to take the flag for granted. It’s amazing how many years and how much hot debate were devoted to finding a new official flag for Canada.Lennoxville’s very own Minnie Bowen proposed a new design in the 1920s - a “flag of inclusiveness, of courage and devotion to this country.” That’s from the website 100objects.qahn.org.Finally in 1964, Prime Minister Lester B.Pearson heated up the debate by forming a committee to choose a flag. The choice came in 1965.It was a red maple leaf design by George Stanley, based on the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada. The flag’s geometry is to die for.It is horizontally symmetrical. It is twice as wide as it is high. And here the description on Wikipedia lapses into a different language - what seems like a secret code. It’s “vexillology” or the “scientific study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags.” “In heraldry, the flag has been blazoned as ’Gules on a Canadian pale argent a maple leaf of the first’,” says Wikipedia. And this blazon was registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority on March 15, 2005.Let’s untangle that.Heraldry is the study or art of creating, granting or blazoning arms - as in a coat of arms.A blazon is a formal description of a coat of arms, a flag or a similar emblem.Gules is a specific dark colour of red.A Canadian pale is the centre band of a vertical triband flag (one with three vertical bands) that covers half the length of a flag, rather than a third as in most triband designs. And argent is a specific silver colour. So that means the Canadian flag has a white central square band that is exactly half the length of the flag.It is bordered by two vertical red bands exactly half its size. And in the white square is a red maple leaf. The leaf is stylized and has 11 points. Why?Because wind tunnel tests showed this design to appear the least blurry of various designs when tested under high wind conditions. But the origin of the leaf design is controversial. The maple leaf has been used as a Canadian emblem since the 1700s.It was added to the Canadian coat of arms in 1921.For the flag, the maple leaf was designed by Jacques Saint-Cyr.But Jack Cook claims otherwise. He says it was lifted from a copyrighted design owned by a Canadian craft shop in Ottawa. That’s per www.canadasfour-corners.com.The Maple Leaf flag was adopted in 1965 to replace the Union Flag, or the Canadian Red Ensign. That had been the de facto national flag of Canada since the 1890s.The Maple Leaf flag is the first ever specified by law as the country’s national flag. But - another secret. The “Royal Union” flag is also an official Canadian flag. That’s another name for the Union Jack, the official flag of the United Kingdom. For Canada, it is “a symbol of membership in the Commonwealth and allegiance to the Crown as approved by Parliament on December 18,1964.” And that’s what the Canadian Heritage website says.Ra.writes@gmail.com IF IT BREAKS, WE’LL FIX IT.IF IT BREAKS, WE’LL FIX IT.IF IT BREAKS, WE’LL FIX IT.HAPPY CANADA DAY!
