Ten new murals coming to Sherbrooke Page 3 RECORD The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 ¦ - Extreme close out regular season Sports - Page 8 75 cents + taxes PM#0040007682 Wednesday, July 23, 2014 Young mechanic crushed in garage accident By Gordon Lambie Sherbrooke Maxime Fortier, an 18-year-old me chanic, was killed in an accident at the Paul Boucher garage on Pavilion Street in Rock Forest yesterday morning. The young employee of the garage died on site after a Honda Odyssey mini-van fell on him off of one of the garage’s hydraulic lifts.According to Constable René Dubreuil of the Sherbrooke Police Service, a 911 call was made at around 8:10 Tuesday morning stating that an automobile had fallen onto an employee of the garage.“We don’t yet know if it was a mechanical failure in the lift or if the car slid, but we know that the vehicle fell on the young employee.” Dubreuil said. The SPS spokesman added that the vehicle had been raised several feet in the air prior to the fall. The SPS are now working with the CSST, Quebec’s workplace health and safety board, to investigate the cause of the accident. Two CSST inspectors were sent to the garage on Tuesday.Fortier had only been working at the garage for three weeks, having only just recently completed his certification in Coaticook.Another technician working on the same vehicle was unharmed.According to the CSST, this is the second death of a young worker on the job in the Eastern Townships this month. On July 10, a 17-year-old worker in training at the La Fougère farm in Compton was killed when a tractor fell on top of him.100 years of memories CLAUDIA V1LLEMAIRE Beatrice Beattie, 100, poses with her certificate of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth at her room in Wales Home.' By Claudia Villemaire Cleveland With her memories still fresh, Beatrice Beattie celebrated her 100th birthday last Sunday, stories from her youth and her life as a teacher still sharp and clear and always ready for the “telling.” “I already had a grand birthday party with family and close friends last Sunday,” she says as we enjoyed another birthday celebration for residents at this foyer whose anniversary falls in July.“And on the actual day of my birthday, July 20th, this Sunday, 1 guess there’ll be another smaller celebration,” Beattie admitted last week. With congratulations from Her Majesty the Queen, the Governor General and the arrival of nephews, nieces and another generation of close relatives, Beattie can look back on a cen- tennial birthday for the record books.“I taught school for 38 years,” she re calls, sometimes facing the challenge of up to 40 first-graders.“It could be quite a challenge,” she admits and adds, one year, to accommodate the parents of a four-year old, even admitting this youngster into her class.“He would fall asleep both morning and afternoon, and, of course, we provided a pillow and probably a bit of blanket too.” Cont’d on Page 4 FESTIVAL DES arts Georgeville — Fitch Bay _ JULY 19-27, 2014 r#* rll\l I'^YTiV Trank And Ernest 1 HÉ CPASfl'TteTS 2014 UFS, Inc Distributed by Universal Uclick for UFS c Herman IhAA/ES 7 2?*‘ Grizwells mm.Vo you FTti like mmt, WKD-IH-HAKP -mfeÙSBm P^kK?Do MIND IF I pop ^UlT YoU^ELF, I Soup to Nuts -A/HI ©2014 Rick Stromoski DbL by UrwersaUdck Emai: soup2mjtz@cox net KNOW TH© PâRT OF Kids waoaziNes wneRe Tues1 show Things thst Kids seMTTHeM,HKe STOWES aND Dtav/lNGS?t© Laughingstock Licensing Inc., Dist by Universal Uclick.2014 Don t worry, this’ll probably hurt me more than you.© Heart and S»*** Check'™Health Check" DiabetesThe New EPIDEMIC REACT NOW! Say 9 times “Hail Mary" every day, for 9 days.Make 3 wishes, the first one concerning businesses, the two others for the impossible.Publish this article on the 9th day.Your wishes will be granted, even if you don’t believe.Thank you Mother Teresa S.B.The problem is, my parents are quite judgmental & racist WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2014 Annie’s Mailbox Dear Annie: I am 37 and divorced.I identify myself as bisexual and try to live my dating life very privately. The problem is, my parents are quite judgmental and racist.1 dare not say anything about my dating partners, who are of either gender and any color. But I am tired of living my life for others. If I choose to go my own way, however, my two children would lose their grandparents.Any suggestions?— Frustrated in Virginia Dear Frustrated: You aren’t giving your parents any credit for being able to accept you as you are for the sake of their grandchildren. You don’t need to give them details of your dating life and parade various partners in front of them.No one does. But you should not be afraid to introduce them to someone who becomes a meaningful part of your life, and then give them the time to work through their feelings. You can find support through PFLAG (pflag.org).Dear Annie: Many years ago, I was disowned by my parents and most of my extended family for marrying against my parents’ wishes.I was allowed back into their lives only because they wanted to see the grandkids. Now, with elder care issues, we are struggling with appropriate boundaries.I’d like to offer some suggestions: Instead of spending every moment yelling at me because I am not there more often, don’t do enough and don’t measure up to your friends’ kids, try saying that you are glad to see me, thanks for the help, etc.I will do more if I feel appreciated.SUDOKU Difficulty: 4_(of 5) 5 7 2 1 4 9 4 2 9 3 6 5 8 3 1 7 5 8 3 6 4 3 8 6 7 I need to know about your health problems and your wishes regarding treatment, but couldn’t we talk about something other than your aches and pains once in a while?Keep your expectations realistic.1 have kids, a job, a home to maintain, in-laws who also need help and my own set of health problems.I am not going to drive 400 miles twice a week to mow your lawn.Hire somebody.Stop trying to manipulate me.The time you claimed Dad was dying so I’d spend all my vacation time with you? That was cruel. It destroyed my trust in you.If you want honesty from me, then be someone who is safe to tell the truth to.Listen respectfully.Apologize sincerely when appropriate, or explain your point of view and the reasons for your choices.Don’t attack me.Be cordial and polite toward my spouse and kids.If you force me to choose between you, I will choose thepi. You say that you are too old and set in your ways, and I have to love you the way you are.You are the one who wants a closer relationship.I am ready to give up.If you want a different outcome, you are going to have to change, too.— Your Son Dear Son: You obviously have had a poor relationship with your parents for years. We agree that they sound difficult and demanding, but it will be hard for them to change without calm and consistent responses from you, rewarding their appropriate behavior, leaving when they are manipulative or insulting, and teaching them what you will tolerate.Only you can decide whether it’s worth the effort.Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Hurting Mama,” whose son texted her “Happy Birthday.” The first time my son sent me a text to wish me a happy birthday, I called him to inform him that if it begins with “Happy” or “Merry," it is not a textable moment.I didn’t speak to him in a harsh or mean way, just matter-of-factly.That was two years ago, and I haven’t received a text on important occasions since. This is a bit of a family joke, but everyone now knows when it is appropriate to text and when it isn’t a wise move.— A.7-23-14 ©2014 JFS/KF Dist.by Universal Uclick for UFS HOW TO born in Hungary in 1912, but lived in Britain from 1946 until his death in 1987.He was known for his amusing commentaries on various countries.About Britain, he said, “English humor resembles the Loch Ness Monster in that both are famous, but there is a strong suspicion that neither exists.” I disagree with half of that — and it is only slightly relevant that I was born in England.True, the British sense of humor is dry, but have you not laughed at Britcoms on PBS?However, the key word is “both.” Here, both sides can make good plays.South is in three no-trump.After West leads a fourth-highest spade five, what should happen?South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club.He must get his extra tricks from dummy’s diamonds. And there is a natural reaction, after winning the first trick in hand, to play a diamond to dummy’s king and cash the diamond ace, planning on .playing a third round. Here, though, when West discards a spade (not a heart!) on the second diamond, even with the heart finesse working, the contract can no longer be made. The correct technique is to duck (lose) North 07-23-14 * A 6 3 ¥ 7 2 ?A K 7 5 4 2 * 7 5 East ?10 2 ¥ K 10 defenders continue plugging away at spades.South can win in his hand and play three rounds of diamonds to establish two winners in the dummy while the spade ace remains as an entry. If West is allowed to hold the first diamond trick, he knows that the spade suit is hopeless. He should shift to his club king, under which East should signal with his jack. Then the contract fails.West ?J 9 8 5 4 ¥ J 9 8
