THE QCGN rallies Bill 10 opposition UVM’s Gear McBride looking north Page 3 The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 Sports - Page 7 75 cents + taxes PM#0040007682 Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Christmas coming early Sherbrooke’s Santa Claus Parade coming Nov.30 », A * * '¦ it mBl'1 GORDON IAMBI F Children from the Les Petites Puces daycare seated with Mrs.Claus and her mischievous elves at City Hall on Tuesday morning.By Gordon Lambie Sherbrooke City to sort out school parking issues in Lennoxville By Gordon Lambie Sherbrooke Parents dropping off their children at Saint-Antoine and Lennoxville Elementary schools are soon going to have to adjust their parking habits.Sherbrooke city council passed a motion on Monday night to reorganize and standardize the parking zones around the two schools, in order to bring a patchwork system into line with municipal regulations.“It’s all a question of safety,” said Claude Charron following the meeting.The Lennoxville borough councillor explained that when the city and police inspected the signage around the schools it was found to be either missing or unclear in many cases.The result was a situation in which people were parking in unsafe or problematic ways when picking up and dropping off their children at the schools or their associated daycare programs.When it comes to school zone safety, Charron said, the city is not taking any risks.According to the wording of the decision, the police inspection of Academy, Church, Hunting, and Speid Streets turned up signage from several different years that did not meet the needs for the community using the parking space.As a result of that, parking in the area is being standardized to cover a 7 a.m.to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, September to June system with clearly marked zones.Under the new rules Academy, Speid and Church streets will have distinctly defined drop off zones allowing parking only for a period of five minutes.All of Hunting Street as well as the section of Church directly in front of Saint-Antoine and the section of Speid neighbouring LES’ schoolyard will be no stopping zones for all nonschool vehicles.The work to standardize the signs is estimated to cost the city $3,630.Santa Claus is coming to town again this year in Sherbrooke for the annual Santa Claus Parade.Scheduled this year for Sunday, Nov.30 at 2:30 p.m., the parade will wind its way through Fleurimont and the city’s downtown core to the Marché de la Gare, offering onlookers an afternoon and evening filled with festive fun for the whole family.This year’s programming was unveiled at a special press conference, held on Tuesday at Sherbrooke City Hall by Saint Nick’s chief communications elf, before an audience of children from the Les Petites Puces daycare centre.The elf was assisted in his announcement by Le Coeur du Cegep inter-generational choir, who sang Christmas carols, and Fleurimont bor- ough president Lousida Brochu who did an impressive job of speaking through a rain of Christmas bows pelted at him by the mischievous minions of Santa’s workshop.“(The Santa Claus Parade) has become the quintessential event to signal the start of the holiday season,” Brochu said.“It is a moment of celebration for young and old.” Presented by the Chemika Mamode Uniprix in Fleurimont, this year’s parade has been organized and prepared by the mischievous elves, and thus offers a range of new and exciting sur-prises.the parade route is littered with programming stops, including several hot chocolate stations, live musical performance, and activities organized by the association of downtown merchants and the Museum of Science and Nature, among other groups.The annual parade relies on a team of no less than 250 volunteers and 40 different partnering groups and organizations.The various partners have contributed nearly $25,000 to the cause this year, and more support is on the way thanks to the parade’s new fundraising lottery.Tickets are being sold, at a rate of $5 each or $20 for a book of five, for a drawing from which participants could win a $3,500 travel credit from La Boutique du Voyage, or one of a $1,000 or $2,000 credit at the Carrefour de L’Estrie.Tickets are being sold at the Chemika Mamode Uniprix, the Georges Bakery, the King East IGA, the Fleurimont Chamber of Commerce, the Fleurimont borough office, and at the box office of the Julien Ducharme centre.More information about the event, including a map of the parade route, is available on the parade’s website: www.defileperenoel.com ¦THE' RECORD The perfect Christmas gift!
