LABOR WORLD SAMEDI, 28 MAI 1921 - MONTREAL — SATURDAY, MAY 28th, 1921 SUPPLEMENT BRITISH AND AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT Proceeding by different ways, they are marching abreast to the destined end .1.H.Thomas, thi' British labor lent-or, on arrival at Now York, was asked liis opinion of tlio labor movement there.“The American labor movement is fifty years behind (treat Britain, ho sa ill.:‘The labor of Britain is part of the citizenship ami ultimately will be the {government.Take the strike we have been having. There i< no violence, no shooting on the street.Everybody understands each other.Canada has been mille 1 the interpret -oi *s house between tirent Britain and America. We get onr inspiration from both countries. We stand halt way between.Conseipiently we van understand the American labor movement and can understand the British labor 1110 veinent._ t la Great Britain, labor is moving forward to the conquest of political power. It has been frequently predicted that labor will soon have a majority of the elected members of Parliament at West minster. It" this does not i*cenr at the next elections, then most like'y it will be the result of the following appeal to tlu nation.Strikes in Great Britain are tending, to be strikes for revolutionary purposes.i The coal mine strike is fought on the question of a national wage pool, but ,ner in the background, is the contest for l -r-ing public ownership ot the coal mil.o' upon the people. In this aim.the miners have the sympathy and moral support ot’ the other workers.Labor in Britain is ever advancing. In Canada, it must be made to appear a failure, in order to weaken the confidence of the Canadian worker in his Britain brother. So our Canadian papers make it appear that labor has set a wild revolutionary aim as its immediate objective, and when British labor has scored a distinct advance, it i* shrieked abroad in Canada that British labor has been beaten, because it did not attain the wild aims the Canadian press had been declaring it wanted. The miners struck for certain purposes. The question arose among the other members of the triple alliance,] the railwaymen ami the transport workers, whether they too would join the 'trike. After some hesitation, these two sections of the workers refused to order a general strike, and of course, press reports, announced that British labor had received a staggering blow. However, the underlying cause of the refusal of the general-strike was the .la.-t that tile miners had imt • iis i-teo tiieir a-'o.dates in the triple alliance a-to tlie strike and the aims which tlio workers dc-ired to attain. Were it a mere question of maintaining a standard wage for the miners, there is little doubt, lo t that tin- strike of the other| two sections would have taken place.Bat the men did not feel like striking, at the voice «•!' one branch of the alliait-; ee for aims concerning which they hadl not been eonsulted.Stops will be taken! to bring about a conference and toj provide means whereby all three branch-j es of the alliance eau decide upon is-j sues amt lay down the principles for] the protection -.f which a general strike will be called.Great Britain has been singularly; free from the labor spy evil. The character of the men in the union prevent] the ojieration of such creatures.More-; over, unions, in the old country, are! largely of one nationality, and there*] fore understand each other better. In the Baited States, there has been such a tremendous influx of different na-1 tionalities, that unions are composed of; a complex membership who do not ] readily understand the cliaiaeteristics i of each that the labor spy gets in : his nefarious work.British labor is moving forward to triumph. There are communists, but the'.' arc it: the minority.British labor lias develop- I a spirit of sane respou- aud putting it into ef The British Way Great Britain is a little different to cuatiaental Europe. In Great Britain, the ruling class hold on to as long as they can, then they fully give in and surrender part of their power. When the agitation against the cum laws in England was at its height, the Tory premier intro duced a hill to abolish the duly upon imported wheat. The lhike of Wellington, who bad fought Napoleon, and was a Tory of the Tories, was bitterly opposed to the measure, but when the Tory premier explained to the Tory nobleman that the measure was necess-arv to dish the Whigs, the noble lord lent the weight of Ids august vote to the proposal. However, before such a result is attained in England, there must be a gr,-at demand on the part of the people. There must be threats of revolution, and those threats must be serious ami backed by the great majority of the (ample. Then the ruling class give in.In such a political atmosphere is J.II.Thomas The working class must organize in a party. It must become a strong party. It must take the power, and the be behind it.The aims must be well known and kept prominently before the people. The fight is sternly waged ¦ ¦a both sides. It is a bloodless contest of opinions and principles, but it is nonetheless stern and teaaciou open.American The American, however, thinks deeply on political questions, and his desires suddenly come to the surface and are propounded on the floor of the legislative bailies in the form of proposed bills. These bills are little power, .Hsciissed, but find their way into the grace- statute books, or are voted upon by Congress and the various state legislators with little discussion anil are written into the constitution. Those who look below the surface of American politics, behind the blatant bellowings of the capitalist press for the open shop and the smashing of labor, know that there is a tremiend-oii> silent publie sentiment tor very radical legislation. This erops up in the legislation ju>t passe»I in I’.ilitornin outlawing tlie labor spy.It is se n in tin1 revent ileoision of the Supreme four* at Washington, wh it'll has just «levinrt^l that the increased value of properties hel*l bv corporations is subject to the surplus profits tax.It is seen in the way the general publie is getting behind tlu* North Dakota government and backing it by absorb* ing it' bonds by _ i* subscription.American labor is not fifty years behind British labor. In reality, it is not more than a year or two behind British labor.Canada stands America and tirent small iration as yet, influenced by the in the two great countries. Our own country has a stirring history of constitutional development to look back upon.We have a virile population of great moral vigor and strong principles. With Debs and Gompers The report comes that one of the chief ] issues before the unnunl convention of the American federation of Labor which meets at Denver in June will lie the fight against the re-election of Samuel Gompers as President of tlio American Federation of Labor.Leaders of the opposition to the Grand Old Man who lias stood at the head of labor for forty years declare he should he superseded by a younger man of more progressive tendencies. It is probable that a proposition will be made to retire the aged chief with an honora i v title ami liberal pension. This report originates before the meeting of every convention. It was circulated before the Montreal convention met last year, and yet Gompers was reelected by a vote that would have been unanimous save for the solitary opposing vote of James A.Duncan of Seattle.Should the fight come it will he Interesting to watch the results. The struggle will show the progress that extreme radicalism has made in the ranks of the American federation of Labor. Those opposed to Gompers, like all opposition parties, are quite free in their charges of machine rule, but machine rule cannot win against the will of the majority of the members of an organization. This lias Ihvii " time and time again by the overthrow of those who triisl to exercise power against the will of the adlie N’ACHETEZ que des PRODUITS portant l’ETIQUETTE de l’Union r.H'.omX BUY ONLY PRODUCTS.BEARING THE UNION LABEL Etiquette do la Fédération Américaine du Travail
