following letter addressed to a Western contemporary has been handed us for insertion. It opens up a mode of doing business certainly requiring some explanation, which, however, we are not in a position to give :— ’ïlto Moralities of Commerce, Sir,—I do not know whether your Journal is open to such a coipmunication as the following, but I presume it is, as it is in the interest of truth, honesty, fair dealing and respectability.I am a dealer in Dry Goods, manage my business pretty closely, buy whore I can buy cheapest, and for this purpose look about me a eooddeal.I have had transactions with most of the leading importers in Canada, both East and West, and I find that, with scarcely any exception, they will sell me goods at an advance npon the sterling cost, that is to say, they will sell me goods at the price they pay for them in the British markets, and add an advance to cover all charges and their piofit.I have been offered goods at, I may say, all sorts of advances, say from 60 per cent, to 70 per cent.I never could understand how it was that one house wanted 70 per cent, for what another house offered at 60 per cent, and another at 65 per cent., and I came to the conclusion that if there was a fair profit to the importer at 60 per cent, advance, he who asked 70 per cent either meant to rob me or did not want to have anything to do with me.I remained under this belief for some time, but an accident led to the solution of the matter which had bothered me so long.I gave an order to a traveller from a 65 percent., house for some goods which I thought, very cheap; the price was 8d.and Is.sterling.I afterwards saw the same goods in another house whose sterling price was 7jd, and lid., and I don’t believe that the one house paid more than the other for them.Well, I have made the calculation, and I find that, talcing the cost cf these goods to be 7Jfl- and 11,.instead of paying 65 per cent, advance, I have paid in the case of the 7Jd.goods upwards of 75 per cent advance, and in the case of the lid.goods exactly 80 per cent, advance, as any person can see who will refer to those little books of advance tables so liberally presented by the importer to his victim It is difficult to believe that such a system is in general practice, but that it is I know, for I have had confirmation of it in innumerable instances, and the “salting of invoices,” that is the trade term for it, is done npon a scale very different from the two instances which I have given you.I need not multiply instances, but I will give you two which are in my mind at the moment. In one town one house quotes a particular kind of goods Is.8d.and 5s.3d.respectively, another house quotes for precisely the same goods Is.lOJd.and 6s.6d.I think I have said enough to open the eyes of some of the victims of this new inethoa of robbery.I give no names, my object is not to*pick out and expose ' the rascality of individuals, but to expose, and, if possible, stop a system which is a disgrace to the age and the country in which we live. The retail trade is deeply interested in this matter, and the cure is to a great extent in their hands.Let those of them who have an opportunity compare notes and advise you of the results.I am quite sure it they do, you will be amazed at the mildness of my statement. There are other matters, other “tricks of the -trade,” that I may, in a future letter, enlighten you upon.Yours truly, A.Betailer.Guelph, Sept, 1867.Customs Revenue.—Friday, Oct.18.— $18,939.20.Financial.—Tiie money market is unchanged, the demand continuing large.Sterling Exchange was a little irregular, Bank 60 day Bills having been placed at l-16th under 8^ up to 8| on the Street, while at the Banks the rates were up to 9 prem, cash.Private Bills were offered and sold at 8 to 8J for choice names.Stocks are quiet hut steady at quotations. The transactions to report are unimportant.Cotton—The Cotton growth in the South is reported by a New York contemporary as follows : — The accoflnts from the cotton growing region continue of a favourable nature, and good progress is being made, and should there be no killing frost a good crop will be secured. The Sea Island crop has suffered from a variety of causes, and promises to be small.Public opinion has arrived at the conclusion that the production exceeds the demand for consumption, and that a low scale of prices is inevit- Sup Extra.$ 8.2520 8.35 Extra.7.9020 8 00 Fancy.7.0022 7.70 Super from Can.Wheat 7.60® 7.65 Strong do____
