leather from Britain increased 20 per cent., and from the States decreased 40 per cent. The thought naturally arises, why, if the figures show such a wonderful state of things, are not the returns published whole and without garbling? Why is it necessary to hold back the figures relating to woollens—the very item on which the burden of our charge against the N.P.principally rests ?Why quote an insignificant thing like leather, and leave the really important item of silk unquoted ?Manifestly, because the Government dare not publish the figures themselves, dare not allow us to publish them, but instead, descend to withholding information from their own satellites to such au extept that.the latter are constantly showing their ignorance. The published facts relating to cotton prove that trade with Britain is being injured even in that branch in which the N.P.men say it is increasing. An increase in value of only eight per cent», in these days of rising values, means that the bulk of the trade has been seriously curtailed.Nor yet does a rise in the value of the imports of iron and steel prove that the trade has increased. The rise in the value of iron has been in •some articles more than 40 percent. It is possible that, notwithstanding the Government’s flaming figures, there has l)een actually a decrease in the bulk of the British iron trade with us.It is known, too, that there was in these same months of July and August, notwithstanding the increase in value, an actual falling off inffhe value of the total imports trom Britain—a falling off of nine per cent.If cotton, iron and leather so increased in value, how seriously must some other items have decreased in order to bring about this result. But the whole contention of the Government is based upon a fallacy. The relation of American and British values is just as abnormal now as it was two or three years ago, when' American production was at its cheapest and British production at its dearest.Within the last few months the course.of trade has changed so radically that, instead of the alleged competition of America at Sheffield, Americans cannot hold their own at Pittsburgh in spite of their 130 percent., duties on steel.Production is now cheap in Britain, and dear in the States. To claim credit for the N.P.for stopping American exportation, when the Americans are unable to keep British goods from their own market, is just such nonsense as might be expected from a party which never had anything hut claptrap for its stock in trade.Publish the whole of the figures, ungarbled, if you dare.If you dare not, proceed with your nonsensical deductions from insufficient facts, and prove from them that the N.P.fly is the cause of the motion of the wheel.—Globe.Worth trying : lard.Autumn hues : cutting firewood. After the break of day the hours are told by time pieces. Those who put their money into telephone stock make a sound investment.Dicken's “ Edwin Drood” is reckoned by some his greatest work, because he never wrote its sequel. The serpent left his trail in the Garden of Eden, but the general belief is that Eve’s dress-pattern was too scanty to enable her to do likewise. There are few men who have not sufficient confidence in the good nature of their friends to borrow their umbrellas without asking for them. The man whom you saved fro drowning, and the man who never pays you what he owes, you may consider as alike indebted to you for life. The young people of both sexes have for several years been singing about how faithful the old dog Tray was.If he was such a faithful dog how cquld he be Tray.Coiirkspondent :—l- Will the editor please inform me where me and my family can go on Sundays' without danger of being crowded?” Answer' “Go to Church.” « Well, Pat, you didn’t come to the two o’clock train to meet me as 1 told you.” “ Oh, indade l did, sor ; the noisy one is like a whirlwind, making a great stir with no beneficial results. How did I know that you wanted to swear first?” was, according to the imherst Student, the retort of a Freshman in attendance upon a base-ball game when a professor exclaimed to him : “ How dare you swear before me, sir?” There is nothing so' chnrming as the innocence of children.“Mamina,” said a five-year-old, the other day, “ I wish you wouldn't leave me to take care of baby again. He was so bad I had to eat all the sponge cake and two jars of raspberry jam to amuse him.” The subject of conversation at an evening entertainment was the intelli-gence of animals, particularly of dogs.Says Smith : “ There are dogs that have more sense than their masters.” “ Just so,” responds young Fitznoodle.“ I’ve got that very kind of a dog myself.” An old lady at a country post-oifiefc, the other day, asked, « Is there a letter for John Jones, if ye please, sur ?" There being several persons of that name in the town, and a letter for one of them, the clerk asked if this Jones, was in business. The innocent answered, “ No, sur, lie’s in goal.” A clerk was discharged. He asked the reason.“You are so awful slow about everything,” said his employer. You do me an injustice,” responded the clerk.“ There is one thing that I am not slow about.” “ I should be delighted to hear you name it,” uttered the proprietor.“Well,” said the clerk slowly, “ nobody can get tired as quick as lean ” Young man, cast up his head in agony : “ Ah ! by Jove ! how my head aches !
