(c) that this amount of $00,000 should be increased because it is less than the amount due to the Protestants according to population ; (d) that the interest on said amount of $00,000 be allowed from the time the Jesuits’ Estates act came into effect till said amount is paid.Mr.Mercier says that it was never the intention of the government to disturb the present superior education fund derived from the revenue of the Jesuits’ estates. This fund amounts to $78,410, of which the Catholics receive $00,244 and the Protestants $12,179.In allowing the other conditions he merely makes the simple change of having the interest date from the same time as the $400,000 to the.Catholics.In the face of it, the settlement appears very satisfactory, and it may seem to many that it is nothing more than the practical duty of the Protestant committee to take the money Into their possession and apply it to the purposes for which it is intended. To those who take a merely “business” view of the question this may seem to be the wisest lurae, but we believe that there very important constitutional principle at stake which should have prevented the acceptance of the sixty thousand dollars.Acceptance means Ui'it the 1‘rotestant minority approve of the principle o} the union of church and state.Any future legislation which receives the endorsement of the Roman Pontiff will be, no matter how inadvisable, passed in disregard of the wishes of the Protestant minority of this province. And again, constitutional redress from parliament by the exercise of disallowance or otherwise, is made all the more impossible by the acceptance of the “bribe.” Slabs for Sale.DRY SLABS for sale at *2.50 per cord.Or-lefVwith K.Brice, Stall No.4, — ~ r 81 Briigi Street, East Sher- tf-fto JOHN 1’RICK.The Agricultural School at Richmond.OF A farmer’s INSTITUTE.brooF* XuIUyEE.HAVING been appointed Agents for the sale of the celebrated “DOMINION” and “DUDSWKLL” LIME for the city of Sherbrooke and vicinity, we are prepared to furnish Lira* in any quantity desired at short notice.Stock kept at the Lime House near G.T.R.Station.GORDON A LOOMIS, Sherbrooke, May 9, 1889. tf-3» V \\ COUCHS, COLDS, Croup and Consumption CURED BY Al.T.F.N’S LUNG balsam 26c.60c.and 61.00 per bottle.jgyThe Proprietor» of the Cel ehrated Queen Cigar, have recently been obliged to double their capacity for turning out these goods in order to fill the increasing demand for this excellent Cigar.• SR .Jollri Gold Wstck Bold f»r • 14M».aDtU Utaly I B„t (83 watrh la tk* world | FarfscS threa*,p«r.War-.ran tad.H**»y Solid Gold XHuauaf CaaM.Bolh ladLa* land («ata’ *ll**.wit* work* 'and ***** of «qua! vain*.1 One Fcrawa la tack lo-'ealtiy can **cur* on.fran, tegatlMr wttk oarlart* •¦3 r*L Ski* lia* of Howsehold ( »i-plea. ^ wall ** th* | moottaa •nd afcown thet® lO u* formation A public meeting was held in the court house at Richmond on Tuesday afternoon, the loth inst, to receive the report of the committee appointed to confer with the directors of the corporation of the Richmond Agricultural School with regard to purchasing the farm and placing the school on a basis satisfactory to the government and the council of agriculture. The committee reported that the corporation would sell the farm and the movables for the sum of $13,550.They also recommended that a company be f ; audiences were present at both services, especially in the evening when nearly every seat was filled. The sermons were such as only the Rev.Mr.Jeffery could give and claimed close attention throughout. The collections fur the day footed up about $350, not a bad anniversary offering.THE LECTURE.The Rev.Mr.Jeffery was greeted with a fulUhouse Monday evening to listen to his lecture,“Get Up ! How ?” Several pieces of music were most acceptably rendered by members of the church choir, and Miss White of Island Pond, before the chairman, Rev.Mr.Eldridge, rose and introduced the lecturer.Mr.Jeffery spoke under diffi culty, having taken a cold which had settled on his lungs, nevertheless he spoke for an hour and twenty min utes and pleased his audience with the truths that he presented showing the various steps a man should take in order to get up in the world.A vote of thanks was moved by Mayor Bryant, seconded by Wm.White Esq., and carried with applause, the choir closing with a well rendered chorus.Appleton’s Cyclopædia.Tbit valuable work, so highly recommended by the scholars of the age, contains over 25,000 pages, with maps and illustrations exceeding over seven thousand, and in the best style of art : cost the publishers half a million dollars before a sheet of it was printed, and is written by five hundred noted contributors.“This special feature in Appleton’s Cyclopædia may be noticed.A supplementary volume is published each year, so as to keep the work thoroughly abreast of the times. In this are presented all the latest and most important discoveries and in inventions of the year, and whatever advances are made in science, art, philosophy, etc, are duly registered. Thus the Cyclopædia can never fall behind or become stale. An additional volume is also published under the title of a “General Index.” This is exceedingly serviceable, and saves a world of trouble in finding out any items of information contained in the work, which may be wanted by the reader. It often happens that such items are scattered under different titles, and are not to be found in the leading article on the subject.By the aid of the “Index,” the reader can put his finger at once on what he wants.“Mr.C« Dutcher, the authorized agent for this splendid work, is here at present, so that a favorable opportunity presents itself of obtaining on easy and accomodating terms one of the noblest treasures of literature. We cordially recommend Appleton’s Cyclopædia to the people of the Eastern Townships.” See months there was the appearance of a cancer on her person, and after consulting Dr.Worthington of Sherbrooke, she decided to have the cancer removed. She and her husband went to Sherbrooke to meet the physicians, and it was found, as she was under the eyes of the doctor for a few days, that blood poisoning had already set in.Shegrew rabidly worse and in a few days was released from suffering. She had all the care and attention that loving hearts could desire, and tender hands administer. Her end was peace. She trusted in the Saviour she had learned to love.In conversation with her pastor.Rev.Mr.Adams, and others, she said “All is well, I am not afraid to die, I am leaning on Jesus, He will not forsake me, He saves me now.” Thus’on the 29th day of September last been held here, conducted by Messrs Dunnett and Iredale, known as the “Rescue Duett,” from Hamilton, Ont.On Sabbath morning Mr.Dunnett occupied the pulpit of the Methodist church, and delivered an excellent discourse, which was listened to with deep interest throughout, as he spoke of the comparative strength of the Lord’s army as against that ot the enemy.During the week, although the meetings varied somewhat from the Sunday services, yet there was manifest at all times a deep earnestness on the part of the workers, and careful attention from all present.Mr.Dunnett possesses rare gifts as a public speaker and being directed in the channel we now find them we think it not too much to say that we look forward with pride in the near future to find him taking foremost rank as one of the useful and eloquent of Temperance speakers. With his word-pictures, given in the most graphic style, he drives home to the heart and consciences of his hearers, the scenes from real life of whichhe has been a witness till one almost feels inclined to move forward to the ranks of the enemy and cry “Victory or Death.” The singing of the Duett as also the solos rendered by Mr.Iredale are spoken of as being the finest heard in this vicinity for some time.Mr.Iredale possesses a high tenor voice of good power and blending with the mellow tones of Mr.Dunnett, are most pleasing to the ear.Rev.George Stafford presided at the meetings, and defined his position most clearly on the greatest of all moral questions. In the opening remarks, he referred to the individual right of studying and deciding all questions coining before the public mind and that while there was a difference of opinion in the community regarding the liquor traffic, the existence of that difference should not cause any unfriendliness between neighbors or citizens.Total abstinence for the individual, and prohibition for the nation, was given as the only proper solution of the liquor traffic. The series closed by a stereoptican enterttinment, and the meetings throughout are pronounced the most successful ever held hero.Moes River- The mercury indicated 24 degrees above,
