offêred to help her to pay the expenses of bringing Mrs.Marchbanks in from the country village, where her home was, to be operated on in the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal.Mr.Brudeneli’s kindness led to closer friendship and finally ended by his asking her to give herself to him, to become his mistress, which, loving him, and being grateful to him, she found hard to refuse, Agnes Marchbanks installed in a rich apartment on Esplanade Avenue, where she had become the “private wife” of Charles Brudenell, her employer, was not long in realising something of the penalty for wrong-doing and the last instalment concluded by telling how she discovered herself “in a certain condition” and took steps to avoid motherhood.Ro + The long winter wore on and I had to look forward to the return of my mother and sister from the South to which I had been able to send them through Mr, Brudenell’s generosity. The thought of their return troubled me rather much, not that I did not want to see them again.Oh, no, I was longing to once more see my dear mother and know for myse!f that her sojourn in a warmer clime had fully restored her to health and strength. But always before me was the fear of mother discovering what I would rather have died than she should know, my relations with Mr.Brudenell, 1 had taken taken great risks for her sake, to help restore her health, True it is that Mr.Brudene!l had won my love and that I had given it to him fully and without reserve.I could not have lived with him as his mistress unless I had loved him.But “for mother’s sake” was the supreme temptation for me, Yet I knew that my mother rather than accept what I had given her, the trip South, the means to live, anda:lthemany good things I had been able to do for her since .she had gone away on her search for health, would either have died or lived in suffering and want. And the fear came to haunt me that I should not be able to hide from hey the manner of my life.My only hope was that she would not pass through Montreal .on her return journey and that I should be able to keep up the pretence of working so far as she and my sister were concerned and keep them ignorant of the truth, Charles, my lover, and I would often diseuss the matter. He would assure and reassure me that all my' fear and anxiety had no foundation and that I was worrying over a chimera, “You must take a holiday as 800n as possible after your mother returns home and spend the time with her,” he said, “and yoy wil} then see how little you have to fear.re Sa = —— —— ep 0 SH Your mother wil} never sua.pect anything.” “I shall fee! My mother came home a iittle before Easter.I managed things so that she went to our home in the Eastern Townships without touching Montreal on the.journey.At Easter I went home to see her and sister.I need hardly say that I did not go home dressed in the finery that was my constant attire since becoming Mr, Brudenell’s mistress.I had kept most of my former clothes and bought one or two fairly cheap new dresses and things so that I should not make any great splash and awaken any suspicion in my , mother’s or my sister’s minds. They were very innocent and seemed not to have one thought of there being anything said to me in my sister’s ab- wrong, True, dne day mother sence on some errand for Waa - ——-——mame = = WIFE'S STORY — mere ce ce 0.mother at Sherbrook, not many miles away :— “It must have been ver hard for you to do so muc for me, dear, as you have done.” I fear I colored up but her failing sight must have prevented her noticing it.“Oh, mother dear;”I replied, “don't let that worry you.Mr.Brudenell was most kind in advancing me the money for our travelling and I have ad a good increase of salary, I am really doing very well, mother, and I am wel] able to do it for you.” Mother was a!ways unsu- spicious by nature and had such perfect faith in her daughter that not for one moment did she think of the possibility of my selling myself, for so I had done, as I see things now, that her life might be spared.I had a little more trouble in answering some of my sister’s questions but always managed to evade them and to make her feel that all was right. One difficulty though that faced me was that my sister wanted to come to Montreal and find a position. But this I talked her out of doing on the ground that mother needed hey constant care at home, So life went on.I came back to Montreal at the end of Easter Week, and somehow or other I felt glad to get back to my cosy apartment, my home, my love nest, where Ï could find sanctuary from the searching hearts and accusing eyes of my dear mother and sister, little though they knew that every glance they gave me in love was an accusation and scarred my soul and every expression of their love for me a rebuke to my sin.The summer passed by.I made several trips into the States and Western Canada with my lover. They were business trips for him but he could not bear to leave me.He Was terribly in love with me, as I with him. This is what made him take the great risks he ran in having me with him on these trips and our living at hotels as man and wife, though always we used an assumed name. But on one of these trips there occurred something that was to have a marked effect on our lives in later days.We were staying at the Hote] Commodore in New York, We always dined in our room and never in the public dining room. But going out to the theatre one evening and passing through the main entrance to our taxi I noticed Mr, Brudenell give a start.I asked him in the taxi what had caused him to start so.He tried to puf me off, saying it was nothing, but my woman’s intuition told me better and finally he told me.He had seen a private detective from Montreal as we pased out of the hotel, a well known man of his class, who was either the head of, or held a leading position in a detective agency.I persuaded my lover to forget and he seemed to do so then.‘But a week or two after our return to Montreal, he told me that this detective had heen to see him and that he had had to buy his silence.I am simply relating what ig true when I say that for years my lover paid blackmai! to this fellow. He must have got many Lhousands of dollars out of Mr.Brudenell during the years that followed and, ultimately, he was one of the factors in ending our dream of love and bringing down our temple in ruins about our heads.(To be continued.) we have condemned. This we shall continue to do, quite impartially and fearlessly, having only the public interest in mind.Mr.Robins has done some fine things already. He will yet do better things if we-who love the Theatre and The Drama cooperate fully with him.His efforts have suffered much from poor exploitation for one thing. The fact that he came here from Toronto with a big Toronto reputation, and that much was made of it in bringing him before the public of Montreal, has not helped him, we think.Montreal, even English-speaking Montreal, does not place the same value on Toronto opinion that Torontonians do, In fact, we are somewhat inclined to resent the superiority of Toronto, This may be parochial] and all that, but it is a fact that theatrical managers cannot forget or overlook without endangering their bank roll. Some of the Robins plays have not appealed to us, but there has been some splendid work done by the whole company and good work deserves recognition and support.60D FILM, BUT POOR STAR AT THE ALLEN There is one fault with “Kindred of the Dust”, which is the feature of the program at The Allen this week, and that fault is the star.In this picture, Miriam Cooper is cast entirely out of character, and as a result she misses much of the charm and character which justly belong to Nan of the Sawdust Pile, There is too much pathos about Miss Cooper’s portrayal of the role; too many glycerine tears.Nan was never like that. The other characterg of thy picture are very cleverly portrayed, particularly that of Hector McKaye, the old Laird of Port Agnew, Seldom does it fall to tle lot of the public to see a more thorough bit of workmanship than is given in this art, The Laird is at once the ard headed business man, ‘whose hard headedness and respectability are often swept aside by his love for his son.In the main Peter B.Kyne's great story has been very kindly treated by the producer of the film, though there are spots where the narrative has been dropped at the expense of continuity. This induces jerkiness into the weaving of the screen tale which could have been avoided if the narrative had been adhered to more closely, Photographically nothing better has been sean here in many a day.The forest scenes and seascapes are particularly fine.“Kindred of the Dust” is a picture which can be rated well above the average.L.M.R.THREE CLEVER PEOPLE IN “IRENE” COMPANY “Irene,” which is playing ‘at His Majestys thig week, falls under the head of musical plays which are either made or marred by the cast which presents them.To criticise the book of the play, or the songs, is superfluous. Its success is entirely in the hands of the presenting cast.In the company which is now playing Montreal one finds an assortment of ability, some of it good; of this class of attraction.Fred Rebe, George Leon, Mildred Franklin, Don Trent, Sidney Page and Charles Legert complete the named artists, THE FRANCAIS A markad change wil] be observed gt the Theatre Français (Court) from Sunday next, On that day there will be a Matinee and an Evening performance and the same routine wil] be observed during the week (except Monday Night when Tex Rickard will stage his weekly boxing bouts).Rube Welch will present what he claims is the most wonderful show ever seen in Canada, It will be a special Ha'low’een offering titled “A Night at the Circus.” It is a real Musical Burlesque with an augmented Star cast.Special New Scenery and Costumes and the very latest musical successes will all add to the enjoyment. The Chorus has been further strengthened and for beauty, talent and grace wi'l take front rank.On Wednesday Night will be “Amateurs’ Night” which will afford budding vaudeville artists an opportunity of realising their ambitions. On that occasion two New York Managers will be present.Entries should be made at once through the manager, On Fri-| day night a Wrestling Carnival, in addition to the usual show, will be the great feature.THE CAPITOL The eternal triangle scores another goal in the picture which will form the piéce de résistance of the Capitol program next week, “The Storm”.The propinquity of isolation is responsible for al! the trouble in which two men friends find themselves as the result of their mutual love for one girl. The picture shows the fight which each makes for honor .and for the protection of the Coram ipl | “PHANTOM SHIP” AT THE SYSTEM The picture which the genial John Fiddes is showing at the System for the remainder of the week is “The Phantom Ship,” an adaptation of Captain Marryatt's tale which we all r.ad wjien we were boys (no offence, ladies). The cast, while it includeg no outstanding stars in its ranks, is an able one which gives a very good presentation of this interesting sea story.Coupled with the Marryatt film, there is a melodrama of the old school. It's title is “Don’t Shoot,” and the action aptly fits the title. The star in this film is Herbert Rawlinson.Altogether a first class double bill, particularly when one considers the cost of admission woman whom each has sworn to guard, the gradua] weakening of the one, and the strengthening of the other, and it all ends happily, which is more than can be said for some of the triangles of real life.House Peters.Matt Moore and Virginia Valli are the three sides of the triangle, and Reginald Barker is the director. There wil} be the customary comedy and musical features on the bill as well, and on Monday evening Manager Thomas will inaugurate his “chora’ evenings”, which will be held each Mondav henceforth for the season.THE ALLEN Ladies will learn all about their faults, and fond husbands will gee their wives’ weaknesses exposed at The Allen next week, if they go to see “What's Wrong with the Wonien”, which George Rotzky will offer as his special feature picture.Al: of us (referring to the weaker male sex) have entertained opinions of our own for a long time on this subject, though some of us have never had the courage to air those opinions, at least not above a whisper.Whether the producer of this picture knows what really is wrong, we don’t know.Perhaps there isn’t really anything the matter at all.It simply remains to be seen, as Caesar or some other silly ass, was wont to remark. So you'd better go and see it for yourself, but in any case you will see a firat class cast and a super production. In the cast are Wilton Lackaye, Constance Bennett, Montague Love, Mrs.De- Wolfe Hopper, Baby Helen Rowland, Barbara Castleton, Rod.La Rocque (who looks like Rody Valentino), Julia Swayne Gordon, Huntly Gordon and Paul McAllister. It is an ’Equity release, well spoken of elsewhere, and it has been doing tremendous business wherever shown.SYSTEM THEATRE “Trapped by the Mormons” bobs up again next week, this time at The System Theatre. The film, which has already been seen in Montreal, is an expose of the corrupt practices of Mormonism, which are conducted under the guise of religious rites. The film shows it up as so much white slavery, and preaches a sermon which everyone can well afford to take in, particularly in the light of the perpetual house- to-house Mormon propaganda- preaching which.actually exists ‘in Montreal to-day.“Trapped by the Mi Boxing Contests every Monday Night at the Theatre Francais (Court) instead of at the Arena as heretofore. This will be in substitution of the usual Rube Welch Burlesque Show.We believe that this is a very good move on the part of Tex Rickard and should attract a larger audience to these exhibitions of the manly art.In all sincerity we wish Tex Rickard every success and feel sure it will do much to further popularise this class of offering amongst sportsmen of Montreal.HONEST CRITICISM Dear Mr.Roberts: Thanks for the copy of THÉ AXE, which seems to be getting better all the time.Personally I am particularly pleased with your criticisms of the various shows and picture plays of which I have heard favorable comments on al sides.Apparently the public appreciate an honest opinion as far as they importation of the deadly poison which threatens to undermine the very vital|- organs of the community.Every ounce of narcétics which finds its way into Canada through the routine channel of the customs is directly traceable and accountable for by the Government officials at the ports of entry. Then it disappears.Consigned to the great wholesale drug firmg it passes into their hands, Then it passes out of sight so far as the Government is concerned, until it reappears in the courts in the shape of “effects”, and poor unfortunates who have purchased the powdered damnation on the principal streets of this city are sent to jail for long terms, to serve the time which shou:a rightly be: served by those; who have: permithed the stuff -, to be passed from, hand to ~~ hand until it has reached the “dope fiend” himself, The - Government and its pra.is plentiful be.minions wil] proclaim that the drugs which are sold to ad- dicta are smuggled drugs, and we will grant that in some measure this is true. But here again is a crime ‘which can be laid at the door of a negligent Government and directly at the door of incompetent and crooked petty and major officia's, who on the one hand do not know enough to keep their eyes opened and on the other keep them open wide enough to let the drugs slip through while a portion of the profits stick {0 their slimy fingers. It may be impossible to stop smuggling in its entirety, but it is possible to curtail wholesale smuggling and there are public servants who wil! know what we mean when we make this statement.\\ But there are far more drugs being imported into Canada through “legitimate” channels than could ever necessary for the ordinary demandg of the medical profession. These drugs from the customs come into the hands of the wholesale drug firms, and there are many such firme whose importations are greatly in ‘excess of cinal purposes by retail druggists.¢ The responsibility lies at the door of certain wholesale firms, a number of retail druggists and with a coterie of medical practitioners who have abandoned legitimate practice for the more lucrative calling of supplying narcotics “to the trade”.There, and in the hands of Government servants who are either crooked, or negligent, or both, lies the crux of the whole question of the drug scourge, and not in the Recorder’s Court. The strictest surveillance must be kept on all firms and rsons who are permitted by aw to handle drugs in any form op quantity, whatsoever.Watch and ward must be kept at all our ports of entry, so that the damnable “snow” and its sister curses shall not enter our borders. When thse things are done the traffic in drugs will disappear. It wil] never be curb>d by sending its unfortunate wrecks to fill our overcrowded prisons.Prevention is the great necessity, not cure !
