Montreal has acted ungratefully towards the Provincial Government ufter all had been done for, Montreal that has been done by the Guvernment.Montreal does not ask, nor want, the Provincial Government Montreal alone. In other words, own affairs without being Mo.treal ie quite capable of managing its kept tied to the apron stringss of the Quebec Legislature. There has ben too much interference with Montreal's autonomy in the past. The principle of Home Rule for Montreal should now be recognised.Wo have our charter and with it the capability of successfully adminiater- ing our own affairs. And, if we have not this ability yet, we can only get it by experience. It will be by making mistakes and paying for them that we shall, like all other cities, as well as individuals, learn our leseons. It is better for us to make our own mistakes than for others to make them for us.To Quebec, we say, leave us alone, and then you wili not have to grumble or complain of our ingratitude, The Opposition Opposes HE Legislature has opened and the net results of the first week T would seem to be that the Government has learned that it has an Opposition confronting it.A wonderul change has occurred since the last House died, or was killed by its controllers.Instead of five almost lone figures sitting on the Opposition benches, there are now twenty or more ther and already they have shown their mettle. The Government is faced by a corps of keen debaters who, it is already evident, are bent upon fulfilling the dictum’ that “the duty of an Opposition is to oppose”, .i Mr.Taschei®au must frequently ask himself as he surveys Mr.Sauvé's enlarged band of followers: “Why did I call an election last winter?” It may have been considered good political tactics so to do, but that is doubtful, Possibly it was reasoned that if a snatch vote was not taken then it might mean utter annihilation when finally the Government's record was submitted to the electors? The correct view would be probably that had the Liberals waited and allowed the strong resentment felt by the public against them on account of the John H.Roberts’ Imprisonment Bill, and their treatment of the editor of this journal, they might have been reelected with their numbers comparatively ntact, instead of having their majority cut in two. This leads us to say that, amid all the talk in the Legislature this week about the last general election, the real reason for the Liberal debacle in Montreal was not so much the Government's treatment of Montreal as the Legislature's treatment of John H.Roberts, its interference with the freedom of the press and, especially, the changing of the law to make the punishment of the offending editor more severe than the law provided for at the time of his arrest.Camouflage the matter as much as Government and Opposition alike may do, every keen and disinterested political observer and every straight thinking person will agree on that point.’ As we read the debates in the Legislature this week, we cannot but be struck with the naive character of the mentality of certain of ou?political leaders.Take Mr, Taschereau and Mr, Athanaze David for instance. Both these Ministers of the Crown complained of Montreal's hostile attitude towards the Provincial Government in view of what the Government had done for Montreal, Millions had been £pent in Montres] by the Government, three millions on a Court House, twenty-five mile lions on roads, and so on.Both ministers seemed to forget that it was Montreal's money, the Government was spending on Montreal and not theirs, and that Court Houzes are built and roads made not as a proof of paternalistic love.and care, but because the Court Houses and Roads, and Technical Schools, and Art Buildings, and what not are needed.Te: build them otherwise is merely to throw sops to Montreal in the hope of gecuring or retaining political favor ‘and neither Mr, Taschereau nor Mr.David would desire the people of Montreal to belfeve that they have done for Montreal what they have done simply .to placate its electors. The opening debates of the Legislature will likely have one effec on the followers of the Liberal Party, the sincere type of Liberals who have no political axes to grind but cherish the principles of Liberalism for the sake of those principles, and that effect, we believe, will be thas.sincere: Liberals will be regretting.the leadership “of -Mr, Tascheresu more than ever, The Liberal Party cannot survive in Quebec unless it changes its leader.: He cari never recover from.the, consequence of his fatal error of judgment.in imprisoning the editor of THE AXE last winter. And when the facts of the Attorney General's treatment of Jobn H.Roberts subsequent to the latter's release are made public, the - Premier’s récovery.will be - more impossible still, treatment that is à recerÿ of broken-promises and pledges to.one whose very martyrdom deserved at the least the implementing of promises made at the time his release was made.oT : EE ’ : As to who is to take Mr.Taschereau's place should he retire that is beyond, out right to say.We are not sufficiently interested to worry shout it.But that there wilt be à change in Liberal.leadership the pres- - ent sessloh of the Legislature wil make.clear; it must.become increasingly evident to all Liberals as: the session progresses, that Mr.Taschereau is to-day in the position of Mr.Baldwin, the British Conservative leader, who called an unnecessary election hoping to win a snap victory only to’ return to office with but the‘semblance df power and his party dis- eredited in the country. The Promise of Labor Banking ’ * } - = IVE years ago, to predict the rise of characterimation L of the Hunchback of Notre- Dame, Victor Hugo's epic, playing at the Palace this week, bears the true stamp of genius. The repellent half-antmal, hal£-human that Hugo immortalised is perhaps one of the most difficult roles that any actor could de asked to mimic but Chaney's portrayal is undoubtedly the finest thing the modern scfeen has ever produced.Bupeniatives exhaust themselves and are but faint praise of the film itself the conception and execution of which have brought into play every resource of the film world. The reproduction of the famous old cathedral of Notre- Dame, carried out on a scale that beggars ull previous efforts of a like nature, is a thing of rare beauty, Bo careful have been the producers to adhere rigidly to the atmosphere of the age of Louis XI that the audience is carried back Into the ceut- pries during the entire rum of the nm.The ontire cart has been selected with keen judgment but it is relegated to a mass of pawns playing around the Hunchback, so womder- ful is Chaney's acting.Chaney has been scoring triumph upon triumph in character roles but long: efter ho will have passed on from the silent drama his name will be Child” at His Majesty's this week, is strong drama, gripping in its poignancy, its swift-moving action, and its : The story would be more plausible were the scene laid in France, as in the original.Transferred to North American soil, with our different moral conceptions or, rather our lack of Gallic frankness in regard to relations that are assumed “without benefit of clergy”, the play does not ring so true.SHAKES OFF SHACKLES.Mr, Lee Baker as the lover hna little to do until the third art, an pearing not at ai in the second act.He played to the life the polished man of the world, who becomes resentful of his mistrewm's moulding power over him and determines tu throw off the shackles of love that he may shine in the walks of publi: iite.In his scene with the woman's son he portrayed the now gradual, now swift-changing, conquest of conscience and love over ambition and selfishness very finely and made of what might have been u repellent person a lkeable mun.Pehaps the high acting honors of the play should go to Mr.Kenneth Thomson who played the son.Mr.Thomson had a great deal to do.The part is a heavy one, and calls for great vermatility in depicting the change of moods the metamorphosis of the boy into the man, and the relentless determination of the son to compel justice for the mother even at the sacrifice , of his own clean manhood and a girl's purity.Mr.Thomson proved himself equal to every demand of the character, which might easily have made simp-like instead of simple and straightforward. This young actor has little to learn of his art and wid ripen into a very fine and ospable actor some glad day.Miss Eleanor Williams as one of the demi-mondaine friends of Mrs.Thorne, “the woman”, was most amusing, wise.cracking merrily Mr.Harry Gibbs gave u loveable picture of faithful servitor, .acoring heavily though having quite a subordinate part. There is not one badly acted pert in the play, the entire company being worthy of the stars they support, and the finely wrought medium with which Henry Bataille has furnished them for the display of their talents.\\oEW; STARTING SUNDAY A Spectacular Screen- Reel Comedy of a
