Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

carried out amongst us the rm>*t extensive railways, the most stupendous brulee, pray x«utlernen.may 1 not venture to say bridges, tor there certainly ought and must be two, 1 will therefore say the moat extensive rail Mu vs.the most stupendous bridjtes the world ever saw And now, gentlemen, let me »»k you who awoke ua iruni those unprofiiable slumbers 1 Who was it that gave this new and powertul impetus to our energies t Why it was our distinguished guests, ot world wide reputation, who are now here representing the gr«-at firm of lark-son.Feto, Brassey Ac Betts Those gent einen, with that discrimination and judgment for which they have been so long and so justly celebra'ed, saw and appreciated the vast undeveloped resources of our splendid country; brought them Eiromineotly before the people of England, and i.»ve procured for us sufficient capita! to complete a line of railways for extent unprecedented in the world.Vast and extensive, however, as those projects are, I have no doubt that many here present will live to see our railways extended to the great Facrfic Ocean.But.gentlemen, although it is i ot to be denied that the expenditure of 9 or 10 millions of pounds sterling will greatly benefit all classes in the country, I expect to see greater and more lasting benefits still Irom the example which will be set to our inhabitants by the arrival amongst us of the aitizans, skilled laborers, other scientific and industrious men ol that description to be employed on the works. We have a healthy, robust population, which, with a little teaching, would soon be capable of competing successfully with any people in the world.Agriculture, on an improved system, and home manufactures will be thus lost-red and encouraged, and 1 look U|K>n the people employed in tb«*se pursuits as torming the bone and smew, the life soul of any country. Many distinguished travellers, who have lately visited us, have expressed their astonishment at the vast resources of the country, and the rapid progress it is making in • II the elements of prosperity. If this is the case now, what will it be w hen our railroads are completed. Then we shall see oui cities ornamented with splendid hotels, our harbours filled with seagoing steameisof the largest class, our country, the highway of half the world.Perhaps we may be to|«i that this demonstration is premature, but I am not of that opinion. We are now met to do honor and give thanks to our guests for hav-vmg made know n to the people oi England the vast and varied resources of this splendid country, and for having fourni capital to assist us in their development. But judging from the credit and reputation their well known firm has established throughout Europe by the stability and finish of the various and extensive works they have undertaken, and satisfactorily completed, I antici* pile that m a very lew years, we shall have another meeting of this kind to thank those gentle-merit for the justice they shall have done to the country, by the perfect and satisfactory completion of the great works they have here undertaken.Gentlemen I shall not trespass further on your time, and shall therefore conclude with proposing the toast of the day with all the honois :— ” The health of Mr.Jackson and Mr.Betts and may success coalinue to attend their gigantic undertakings.” Noel Bowen, Esq., M.P.rose and said :—There are periods in every man's life when he is called upon tc speak plainly. At this railway meeting a few railroad remarks arc expected from me, and yon will excuse me, if, for a few moments, I am rather dry. With the eyes ol all men upon me, I hardly know how to begin or how to finish. The way in which I am surrounded, is such that I never can forget the distinguished honor dona to me.1 had no right to expect it.But I may speak of my associates of whom I am justly proud.I hey have caried into effect undertakings in Norway, Belgium, Italy, and Egypt, having completed works to the extent of millions, and never had a dispute. The firm with which I am associated esteem the value of character and will not sacrifice the people on this side of the Atlantic. We have come hcic, courting no man's favor and fearing no man's frown. What wc have undertaken, we shall fulfil and to show the earnestness of my speech, 1 may be permitted to remark that since Mr. Belt’s and myself left Great Britain, 46 ships have sailed for North America, on our ac-caunt.We have endeavoured to anticipate yuur animations, by an outlay of capital and by bringing to an early completion, those lines of road for which we have contracted Even though ill should come of it we have resolved to take our chance.— We do not however apprehend loss.Your country has wonderful resources and will repay any outlay of capital however great. When I went home, last fall, I was full of the most sanguine expectation* till I was almost afraid to communicate them to my associates, but, one ofouriirm, the most cold of any as has come with me, .md he is fully sensible of the great railway traffic winch will yet be in this province, a province which is fast hastening to independence and which is even now a fit companion for older countries.Eventually it will be independent. But turning from that point nowhere have we received such heartfelt kindness as in this city of Quebec which used to be after the 1st December, the Cul-de-Sac of Canada, from which we must now relieve the young ladies.• • • The railway system cheapens the transport of sawn timber.17,000,000 of feet will pass over the line to Portland in a year, and indeed the whole produce of the Ottawa will find its way to market by the railroad instead of in the raft.Mr.Jackson nextalluded to the stulden- After saying a'few words more, the Mayor concluded by adverting to tbe pleasing attendance of the ladies in the gallery, he concluded by offering again
