attention and public money. Some persona think it sufficient to devise u skeleton frame work, and by legal enactments to induce the young of all persuasions to Hock like bees to their non-sectarian hives, and be educated by instinct.Method and | system are things good in themselves, but they are not powerful enough to supplant the exercise of reason, and of rational and religious freedom in the training ot the human mind. The attempt to enforce what is usually called the non-jerfunan system, as the Provincial or (iovernmeut system /»ur e.r-ctUenct has failed, will fad iu producing the genetal leaults expected Dorn it, or in establishing and extending the higher and more enlightened degrees of culture throughoul the country. There is in facta radical misconception in the term non-sectarian, the word actually and practically meaning the Vt*r' reverse of what is intended.Non-sectarian institutions are those in which no specia church,j such as the national Churches ol England or Scotland, the Homan < athono Church, &c., can claim any influence, but in which sects of all denominations bear the sway. The representatives of these sects are generally wayward, self-important and sell willed men, who soon acquire the predominant control of the schools; and the schools become their schools. They are unwilling that any other similar institutions should rc-ecive aid from government, and aware » • advantages to be derived by the intercourse of their children with children of a respectable class, they desire to thrust their schools down the throats of the whole population, and to compel the children of all persuasions to attend them or go without. These remarks may seem harsh, and somewhat tinctured by prejudice ; they are, however, the result ol obseivation and experience, and are founded on actual lacts. The truth was at length admitted two or three years ago, by the Superintendent of Education in l pper t ana la.the Rev.Dr.Ryerson, no prejudiced authority certainly in this view of the subject; and the same gentleman acknowledged the necessity of allowing the establishment ot Separate Schools with the sanction and aid ot Government. The confused and jumbled state into which affairs and parties were plunged towards the end of the late Session of Parliament prevented this subject from receiving that full and deliberate consideration which it required and deserved. It was.in fact, deemed expedient to defer any change to a future opportunity ; in yielding to this expediency some of the members from the vicinity of Quebec seem to have incurred the displeasure ol Bishop Charbon-nel.Greater notoriety has lately been given to this circumstance from the rumor that the Right Reverend prelate has publicly denounced the erring members ; which tact will probably rouse public attention to the subject with increased interest. And if, as it is asserted, Bishop Charbonel’s w ishes and design aim only at the hope of placing Separate Schools in Upper Canada on the same footing with Protestant dissentient schools in Lower Canada, there does not seem anything very unreasonable in his educational views. We have to-day only alluded to this topic, which has lately been exciting an increasing interest, in the hope of being aide, now t.ic Session has come to a close, to discuss some important points and facts intimately connected with the Superior, the Normal, and the Common educational system suited for this country, and especially for this section of it.WHO l ull CIJJU'V un-— I ~ ' thought, atul institutions should be embroil* od in a
