Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

and has done this, although he was outnumbered forty to one by a force commandeJ by the best generals of the nation, and equipped with all the beet appliances of offense known to modern times. It is for the future historian to decide whether such a record proves the Modoc chief a “cowardly cur,” or a leader who has developed qualities which are worthy Mhe highest admiration of military minds.~ Again, in the «hooting of Gan by, the historian will have to deal, not with Canby’s excellent and generous qualities, but with the nakedTfacts. He will iind.upon a dispassionate investigation, ¦ at the very time Canby was negotiating that, —Bayard Taylor, July.in Harper'» Magazine/or The Corporatiom Salarie*.An erroneous impression seems to have been created amongst it great many of our readers by the copcludiqg paragraph of our report of the City ÇopnpU meeting in yesterday’s issue, City Accountant increased _ " ____ ^ remove the impression.Attention was called by Alderman Hearn to the fact that the salary attached to that office since its first inception was some $200 more than at present,—and that at a time when the duties were not only so onerous, bat on the contrary much less so than they now are, and he said be did not see any reason that could be adduced against placing the present occupant of the position in the same position as bis predecessors, more especially as the other principal officers of the Corporation, the City Treasurer, City Surveyor, and City Clerk were in undisturbed possession of the salaries enjoyed hy their respective predecessors. On enquiry we find that the Alderman did not go aa far aa he might have gone, as we are informed that np to a few years previous to the appointment of the present incumbent, the situation was divided into two distinct offices—that of Corporation and Water Works book-keeper, at an expense to the city of $2,100.50.Councillor Hearn followed, and whilst highly eulogising the present holder of the office, said he could not second a motion having in view tbe increase of his salary when it emanated from the Alderman for Champlain Ward, and so tbe matter was allowed to drop.?n attempt was made to take from Mr.Wright, the efficient check clerk, the paltry augmentation of $100 granted to him after so much trouble and delay last year, but for once at least, right and justice prevailed over narrow-mindedness, and the salary was allowed to stand at $700.The question of Mr.Gallagher’s salary bav log came np, .Councillor Dinning moved that he be placed on a par with the other clerks of the Corporation, but notwithstanding that the Road Committee have lately increased the pay of one of their foremen, Mr.Gagnon, without any reference éo the Council, to $2 per day, or $600 per annum, tbe motion io place Mr Gal lag bee’s salary at $600 waa lost on a divi sion of 7 against 9.Fob—^Messrs.Hearn, John, Hearn, M.A Murphy, A.H., Dinning, GiWin, Home and Woods.AeAiRBT-r-MesBrs.Gingras, Norris, Cote, Hamel, Mailloux, Laf rance, Taschereau Chambers and Hebert. On the questions of the Recorder's salary some discussion took place, but it was finally left at $1,600.We cannot account for how tbe impression got abroad that the salaries had been increased, and we thought it as well to give the matter in detail.under a flag of truce, he was gradually bringing his men into position, and was, in short, violating one of the best known and most imperative rules of warfare—that forbidding the pushing of military operations under the protection of a flag of trace. The historian will not justify tl^e k>B>ng.of the federal leader under these circumstances ; but, *é may be sure, be will take a much more lenient view of the act, and will not hold tbe slain man wholly guHtléas in bringing upon himself hfs own destruction. When the historian of the fntnre shall reach the gorrender of tbe Modoc leader, it is donbtful that he will greet the fact with a contemptuous guffaw, or that he will find in It anythihg that will induce him—unless a plain blackguard in place of a historian—to characterizb the prime actor in it as a “cwwardly cur.” .On the contrary, he will finds much that dignified, much < that will provoke an admiration not Unmixod with sadness. He fought until there remained to him but two warriors. His forces had all left him ; he was entirely out of supplies, and a coutiauation of tbe fight was impossible. He might easily have escaped alone, but—and bnre is a feature worthy of note—hehad with him five women and six children, and to escape he must abandon them.He chose rather to surrender ; and, savage and cruel as he may be, there was a chivalry hi this decision that is just aa lustrous as though an emanation from the ¦oui of the most gallant knight of the Middle Ages. And it is impossible that tbe historian, in the fact that the Modoc Ubiuf, after his surrender, proved himself no brawling savage or whining coward ; but who, when surrounded by enemies and the centre of a staring crowd, sat like a'statue—possessed of a stately something that reminds one of some noble Roman unmoved amidfct an ordeal that involved his honor and his life. This fashionable sum- mer resort will RE-OPEN for the reception of Visitors on the 17th June.JAMES FENNELL, Manager.June 10, 1873. Bra Si.UOREIT’S HOI, RIMOUSKI.TO MtNUFtCTURERS.OTEAM ENGINtS—7, 8, 9 and 10 INCH O CYLINDERS, ready for Immediate de* (tverv.JODSON’S PATENT GOVERNOR—Price list and descriptive circulars on application.BARK MILLS—The celebrated Bangor put-ero.TURNING LATHES—Engine Lathes, Screw Gnlting Lathes, Brass Finishers’ Lathes, Iron Turning Lathes, Wood Lathes, Ac.LATHE CHUCKS—Independent, Jaw Grand Scroll and Lever, a full stock on band.BOLT CUTriNG or SCREWING MACHINES —Merrlman’* patent.COPYING PRESSES—All sizes, new patterns, [to the trade only.] CRACKER and BISCUIT MACHINERY— All the latest and most Improved Brake Machines, Dongh Mixers, Man’s Biscuit Machines, Cutting Machines, Candy Ma chines, Ac., Ac.R.GARDNER A SON, Montreal.December 7, 1872.THE - Qp-bec & Golf Ports STEAMSHIPCOMPANY fTYHJE SJsL • call attention to oor Stock of Furnishing Goods consisting of Cretones Muslin and Lace Curtains, Table Covers, Valance Fringes, Carpets, MaU, Hearth Rugs, L’ocoa Malting, Orumb Cloth», «linen A felt) Swiss Anttmaoasaor Ac.• SIMONS & F0ULDS, UPPER TOWN MARKET May 2, 1873.GEORGE THOMPSON, (Late W.B.VALLKAU A Co.)
