Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

[" V ornimj COMMERCIAL AND SHIPPING GAZETTE.i> YOK XXX.QUEBEC, TUESDAY.APRIL 18.1876.THE EASTERN TROUBLE.The new* from U» K*rt cootiaue* to be unfeTOreble to the project» of peaceful utilement between the Saltan and his Christian «abjects. The spirit of revolt u evidently spreading ; while, to all appearances, it is also as»uiaing a complexion which seems to toreshadew the general uprising before long of all the Christian provinces against Mohammedan rule, and premises to give to the struggle an intensity and bitterness that can only be terminated by the positive annihilation of one or other of the combatants.Already the efibris of Baron Rodich to find even as much as a ground of negotiation for peace have proved abortive, and it is now said that the Governor of Bosnia has advised the proclamation of a holy war aga'ost the Mussulman.Such a suggestion, in spite of every effort to suppress it, will, doubtless, spread like wildfire among the seriously disaffected Christian subjects of the Porte, and excite \"um to action who could not be reached in any other way.Henegovina has already the active sympathy of the other Christian provinces, which once suffered the seme wrongs and attained qtuui independence by revolt, as well as of those that themselves need the relief for which Hersegovina is struggling.Ever since the insurrection has begun, Henegovina has received their moral support, if not their surreptitious aid, and present appearances are that, with the encouragement of Russia, conveyed through the inspired utterances of the official journals of that country, to the effect that it will not permit enmel inter fere nee m the internal afiain of Turkey* they are about to throw oft the mask and go heart and hand with the Henegovinaas m their gallant struggle against oppression.Servis is already manifesting an almost uncontrollable disposition to mix In the fray. She has been for more than half a century practically independent of Tiirkish rule and is governed by a line of native princes of her own choice. On her own score she hss nothing to fight for, since she is not only free, but is guaranteed in her freedom by the Great Powers * Yet the principality lies along the borders of those Christian provinces, which are still under the dominion of the Sul tan, and which are restive and apparently determined to throw oft the yoke. Her population is virtually composed of th* same Christian, warlike, Sclavonic dement as that of the others, and the tune was when Servis included the great, er portion of their territory ; and even now the influence of Servia in those provinces is of a very substantial and formidable character. And as she regards herself as the chief and elder sister among these races, her sympathies are not only deeply engaged in their behalf, but she feels an irresistible unptilse and mission to engage in a war in their defence.Prince Milan and his most judicious statesmen have averted warlike pm-para lions as long as they could ; but the time has now apparently come when they can no longer safely resist the di* rection of the popular will.We therefore look before long to see Servia open hostilities] against, the Porte, should the latter fail to crush out very promptly the power of the insurgents in the Henegovina, a contingency which doea not seem just now to be very probable. In a war against Turkey prosecuted with the combined resources of Henegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Servia, Bulgaria, Wallachia and Moldavia, with^usaia guarding the neutrality of other nations, there can be no question of its ultimate success and the complete separation of all the territory known as European Turkey from the dominion of the Porte.Whether another trial, somewhat in the line of the Andrassy compromise, yrill be made to settle the quarrel peaceably depends very largely on the sineenty of Russia\u2019s desire to restore tranquillity and lay for the while the rest-leas spectre of the Eastern question; which is, however, a circumstance we doubt very sincerely, fn any ease, it seems tolerably certain that, unless the r^rrt attempt at pacification proceeds from St Petersburg, it will be attended with no better reault than the last. The revolted rayahs are not likely to listen to overtures from any other quarter, so intense has become their dislike of the Austrian peace preachers and so Implicit their confidence in the moral, if not the material sympathy of the Muscovite in a struggle against a foe whom they both detest so heartily. That Russia is playing a deep game in the matter cannot be doubted ; but it remains to be considered at what stage she will decide to snow her hand boldly.A declaration of war by Servi* against Constantinople would, doubtless, furnish the proper opening, when she might be expected to mass her troops on the southwestern frontier and march them to the scene of conflict at the first move made by Austria ; and un less by that time Russia and Austria had secretly agreed on a scheme for the spoliation of the Turk, a European war whose complication and extent no one can foresee, would inevitably be the re- Mr 4.T.Galt's Pamphlet.(To the Editor oj the Otohe.)
