Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
« [...] la direction de The Morning Chronicle, par conséquent, débute en déclarant simplement que, comme nous sommes très fiers de notre relation avec l'Empire Britannique, notre but sera sans détour de créer et d'entretenir un attachement aux honorables institutions britanniques, qui se sont grandement illustrées à travers l'histoire mondiale ». Sous Charles Saint-Michel (1849-1860), le journal devient le porte-parole des aspirations de la bourgeoisie commerciale anglaise et les sujets politiques prennent une part plus importante. L'esprit protectionniste, rattaché au torysme, teinte la rédaction. Durant la période de la Confédération, le Morning est utilisé comme tribune pour faire la promotion des idées de John A. Macdonald. Toutefois, l'attrait premier du journal reste avant tout la vie relative au commerce. En 1874, une fusion avec The Quebec Gazette met fin à une concurrence jugée ruineuse. Fondé en juin 1764, c'est l'un des plus vieux journaux d'Amérique du Nord. Une nouvelle entente survient en 1924. Pour mettre fin à une concurrence qui les affaiblit, le journal alors connu sous le nom de Quebec Chronicle and Quebec Gazette et le Quebec Daily Telegraph (fondé en 1875 par James Carrel, il défend les idées populaires et est reconnu comme étant libéral) s'associent et deviennent le Chronicle Telegraph. Les nouvelles prennent une place prépondérante dans les colonnes de la « nouvelle » publication. À partir de 1934, le journal est connu sous le nom The Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. Il paraît toujours aujourd'hui. lives of the great Plutarch, which are : still the treasured volumes of the student.| Yet the lively gessiper of to-day appea l to a wider constituency than ever biographer appealed to before.There is no style about Faxht Kemble’s delight! 1 literary, theatrical, and social gossip about the people she has seen, and the cities she has visited.There is nothing specially strong about Madakr LrBrum’» half-forgotten tales about her art triumphs, and the painters and men of letters with whom she talked and scold, ed years agone, yet both of these books are full of delicious morsels, and they do manage, somehow or other, to make the dull hours fly rapidly away.6o with HARain Martirkau, true or ‘false, she never hesitates to tell us whatever is uppermost in her mind, and true or fa'se it is charming reading all the same.When we read Biogiapby or UUtory we feel disposed to believe what we re-id.it is otherwise with these old wives’ tales, which just now appear in such great abundance.We read them with the customary grains.Madame Da Kemcsat admits that her memory is sometimes treacherous.A new book comes from the German press.We may expect to see it on our booksellers’ coumers soon, in one of the many cheap editions, which just now are the rage or fashio :.It is called the “Memoir: of Carolotb Vox Lixswoen,’’ and judging from the portions which we have been permitted to see, it promises to be a decidedly captivating work, in thia remarkable volume, a very remarkable story of love and sorrow is told, and though the secret has been kept nearly one hundred years, its revelation at this time, will be none the less welcome for being hiuden away for so long a time.Like certain varieties of old wine, the longer a secret is kept, the better it is.Caroline Vox IrxsnroKX was born, we are told, iu Hanover, on the 27th of November, 1768.She belonged to a prominent fannly, her father being a General m the army, and holding his commission in the famous 12th Hanoverian Infantry regiment—a corps of acknowledged bravery and daring.The General was on very intimate terms with the House of Meck-lenburg-Sirelits, and on the occasion of her betrothal to Koto Geobgb tor Third of England, he accompanied the Princess Sophia Charlotte, to the English Court, where he remained in an important position for some three year*.The Qcekx showed him every attention and treated him with marked and special civility.In all respects he was regarded as a personal friend.Qurex Charlotte offered several times to take the old soldier's daughter Carolixb, under her care, and she wss even proferred the post of Maid of Honor to Her Majesty.Nothing came of this however, immediately.Even when the young lady had reached the age of fourteen, and the oiler was again pressingly renewed, she remained in Germany, on the advice of her grand mother, and continued the prosecution of her studies.On the 13th of April, 1790, Princx William Hrxrt, Duke of C'larxxoh, of England arrived in Hanover^ on a visit to Gbxkral Vox Linsixgkx, who bad travelled with him from Eng land.The youug people met, and it was a decided affair of the heart, at fiist sight.Let us read Carolixb's letter about the meeting with the dashing young English Pnnoe ; it is the letter addressed to Tecbxrk her son-in law, and is very interesting.She writes t— 14 William camo with my father, acd brought me a Utter from bis royal mother, and sshawl-plD with her initla's la diamoeds.it was on Apill 13th that 1 first saw him ; to July we already knew that by death alooe onr love could have its end.No sooner did my beloved father b.come aware of the post* tion in which we stoed to each other than he straightway sought to part os, himself appealing to the Queen in the matter.Yet she.who was so (earful for tbe ardent blood of her eon William tock (he matter bnt lightly—ehe knew nothing of love—end begsed my father to Ut t'.ia d-diying (lands ») c )ntlnu\\ She thought with complacence that ner eon’s fancy for mi at this, the mo-t critical peri d cf his youth, might serve to keep his virtue intact.None dreamed that tor two lives It meant tbe otter wreck of all their joy.” The letter closes with :— first love, are addressed.These letters are full of the romautio attachment which sprang up in the early life of an English King, and a very lovable and charming woman.They are pitched in a lofty key, sentimental if you will, but full of the ecstasy which a loved-devoured soul only can supply.This lady died at the comparatively early age of torty*«ix |Ir Fund years, at Blansko, on January 3lst, 1815, The story is a very pretty one as it stands.It would be a pity now if a literary ghoul, like Mr.8.Barino-Godld, wbo even doubts the existence of the Wandering Jew, should come along and declare it all a myth.Eagan, for reorivlcg Utters under false pre-te'-c-s from the Post Offhe, two years.Détectives are In the country searching for Jimes W Hull, Uteiy alleged to have defrauded tbe Buyal Insurance Comoauv while acting as their agent.He Is sail to be still Id the Province.The noo-onmoiissloDed effi'ers and men of the 101st Boyal Bb> gel Fusiliers In this garrison have subscribed $137 In aid of tbe Wii COMMUNICATION the lower ar.LAWRENCE.Iu Committee of Supply at Ottawa, last night, as will be seen from our repo t of parliamentary proceedings, an item ot $200,000 was adopted for telegraphic communication with the Lower St.Lawrence.The action of tbe Government in placing this amount in the Estimates is worthy of all praise, and we congratulate Hon.Dr.Fortin upon tbe further success of bis efforts in this direotion.DOMINION GOVERNMENT WORKS IN QUEBEC.Tbe people of Quebec, and especially the working classes, will learn with pleasure and satisfaction, that the following items for public works in this city were passed last night at Ottawa in Committee of Supply :— Fortifications, including Dufferin improvements.$40 000 Durham Terrace extension. 5 000 Cliff'under Citadel.35 000 Marine Hospital.2000 Custom House.10,000 Artillery Barracks.2,000 An item of $13,000 was also passed for a new hospital at the Quarantine station at Grosse Isle.kf.A.Mlnghetti, a near relative of tbs Dalian ez-Prumier, has |u4t been killed in a duel with an Anstiian (ffleer, M.Mlogbettl was for several yeaia au attache to the Italian L galiou at Copenhagen, but bad, abunt a y-ar a tbe use of tbe telegraph line on the one side, and the vslne of tbe stock on the other, coold be ascertained In tbe further progress ol the case.As tbe American Union Telegraph Company is not o mnected with these equities, tbe necessary result of holding the contract «Ara vires Is thtt the railway company most be accorded to It all of tbe rights which are secured to the public and the other telegraph companies by tbe sets of Congress chartering the Pacific Brilway Com.proles.Tbe principles of law sre settled and it is only s matter of time and detail ss to when tbe above result la reached.Tubktom, N J., April 13—SiVcral men were raising s bridge In the mill of tbe New Jersey 8:eel and Iron Company, this afternoon, when a bean fell, killing two and injuring two.SPECIAL FROM HALIFAX.Halivax, April 13—In tbe Sapreme Court to-day, the following prisoners were sentenced to penitentiary Bsmael Cameron, for burglary at the Wavsrly gold district, three year* -, George Davis, a soldier, for robbing Ksodlck’s store, ons year ;
