v tl TennL $8-50 per yoar, $1.80 half year, which cludM posted^ 'm»o the position of Chief Accountant of the Grand frunJc in December, 1861, and afterwards to that of Secretary and Treasurer.In the performance of the duties which this fatter office entailed, Mr.Hiok&on found ample scope for that financial and administrative ability whion has since met with such general recognition.For nearly twenty years it was his task to battle against what often appeared insuperable obstacles, but hia skill, knowledge and energy were always in the end victorious, and he had the happiness of preserving the Grand Trunk to its original shareholders when so many lines were put into liquidation and the owners deprived of their property.In 1874 Mr.Hickson was promoted to the responsible position wiuen he has since filled.The first service which he had to perform in hu new capacity was4to effect the change °> gauge of the road eaat of Montreal, so aa to complete iis uniformity THE GRAND TRUNK RAILWAY.An additional evidence of the increased confidence felt in the future of the Grand Trunk Railway is furnished by the result of the application made in England for tenders for the issue of £1,000,-000 sterling, perpetual five per cent debenture stock in scrip or interim certificates, to be exchanged on or after the 1st July of next year for stock certificates ot the perpetual debenture stock, ranking port pattu with the whole issue.The issue is made in aooordanoe with the decision of the Board, wnioh was thus referred to in the speech of the President at the last half-yearly meeting of th# Company held on the 29th of April last : “Following down the third page of the report you will see that there are still a number of items outstanding, which we call pre-preferences.We have redaced those to some extent, as you will see at page 25, where yoa will find ‘preferential charges scheduled In the Deben’ure Stock Act ol 1874, purchased or redeemed by the Issue of debenture stock.’ Wo shall be able :n the course of the next few years, under the Debenture Stock Act of 1874, to redeem nearly all these prior charges.Our securities have now arrived at that poiot that it will be highly beneficial to us to do so, and we shall lose no opoortuulty from time to time of redeeming these pre-preference securttfee, and you will bs happy to hear that the result to the Company will be, when we have accomplished that object, a gain of £20,000 and £25,000 a year.(Cheers.) We sball thus simplify our accounts ; we sbali reduce tbe Interest to that amount— say £25 000 ayear—wblcb la all practically net profit to us ; and we sball avoid tbe risk wblcb Is Incurred more or Kss by public companies lu tbe same position, In having to redeem at some inconvenient moment the sums which fall due to be paid ; for it almost always does happen when la-ge soma are falling due at particular periods that triose periods are Inconvenient to tbe Company/' According to the prospectus the preference securities which are to be paid off with the proceeds of this issue amount to one h il lion and forty-eight thousand pounds sterling, some of winch are now being redeemed and the balance of which are redeemable on or before the 1st of Jnly next year.They bear interest at tbe rate of six per oent., except as to £102,800 sterling of Montreal and Champ lain bonds, which bear seven per oent.; and the actual interest upon them amo-ints to £63,908 sterling.In the circular accompanying the prospectus the advantages of this new issue are pointed out as follows :—“The basis of the debenture stock, itself, will be enlarj and its market value increased.The prior charges referred to will be cancelled and their existing security will add to that of the debenture stock in future.The credit of the Company will be improved.The risk of renewing terminable securities at possibly inconve meut limes will be avoided.The preferenoe stocks of the Company will be benefitted, and their relative value proportionately improved, by the reduction of the charges to be annually met in priority to their dividends.” And it is stated that of the total saving of £25,OCX) a year referred to by the President in his speech, an immediate saving of £14,000 a year will be effected as the result ot the present issue.The issue price was 105 pounds per 100 pounds, that is five percent, premium; so that the actual rate of interest which the investment will bear is £4 15s per centum per revolutionary programme.The party o action at Prlsrend has, however, gained the da/, and the delegttea from Kossove, Novi Bss«r and other dlatrbta remain onited In tbelr resolution to uphold tbe national programme.Tbe Qbw Governor appointed by tbe Porte at Prlsrend was refused admission.All Turkish functionaries bave been dismissed.Lord Hartlngton, Secretary of State for India, this evening submitted tbe Indian estimates for tbe fi» al year 1880.81.Tbe re-ceipts are placed at £66,750.000, and the ex.pendltaree £66,329,000, «bowing a decrease of £1,000,000 on eaob side of tbe account compared with the year 1879-80.He said the statement regarding tbe imperial contribution to tbe war expenaea of India most be deferred until tbe complete cost of tbe war has been fully ascertained, but tbe war waa certainly tbe result of Imperial policy, and therefore assistance to India from Imperial resource* Is necessary.A Paris despatch slates that a frightful railroad accident is reported to bave occurred during a thick fog near Vichy, In wblcb a great many persons were killed and Injured.No confirmation of the report has reaobed here.At Belfast yesterday rioting was renewed.Mounted police charged the mob and 20 persons were arrested.Some booses have bjeu wrecked by tbe rioters.A Paris correspondent eayj Mi s Neilson’s death is attrioaiod to drinking a cup of toed milk, wblcb a medical writer In a Parie journal says is very Indigestible.Miss NeiUon was 12 hours in mortal agony ;
