PACIFIC RAILWAY.In order to meet the demands of our readers, who have been folio wing closely the proceedings in Parliament, we have been compelled to «urrender so much of oor available space that we have left our-•alves little room for the treatment oi other queatioos.The railway matter, however, is the one burning topic of the hour, and we believe our readers are more Intarested in it, than they could possibly be in any other subject at the present time.The interests involved are so great, character of the under taking is so gigantic and vast, and the nature of the discussion now occupying parliament is so interesting and in*true tive, that everybody must feel a more than common interest in the several details which are from day to day laid before them.Perhaps no young country, limit* •d ss Canad* is in means, resources, and in population, has ever before been called upon to embark in an enterprise so full of purport and weighty considerations ss this important highway, which Is destined to open up countless sores of unoccupied territory, and to fill the yast areas of a misknown land with a population of brave and hardy emigrants.The Pacific Railway is not a question of yesterday.It has been the one prominent measure before the country for at le ist seven years, and it has occupied the faithful consideration of three Governments, each of which in its turn, failed to master the subject in a way which was likely to prove acceptable to the people, until the other day, when the suggestion of a syndicate seemed to oâer a satisfactory solution of the grave difficulty.We have already announced our intention to support the arrangement proposed in the contract submitted to Parliament, by the Government.It may .be found necessary to make some few changes in the details, but if that is so, the Opposition so far have failed to show in what those changes should consist.Mr.Blass, it is true, has undertaken to prove that the bargain is a veiy bad one lor the country, *nd we have the utmost respect for Mr Blaxb’s opinion, and the good tempered manner of his speech, but the figures introduced in this instance by him certainly fatal to his resuming, and disastrous to the Une of argument which he employs.Mr.Blass has always been regarded ss a sincere mao, and as one who speaks from conviction.This time, however, his utterances convey the impression that he is an utterly confused man.His own figure?have prostrated him, and his splendid eloquence has been spent in the air for nothing.And this brings us to a oonuderation of the able and masterly rejoinder to Mr.Baacb’s speeeh by the honorable Minister of Publie Works.We have done Mr.Lamhot full justice in our report, and have presented his great effort, word for word as U fell from his Ups.That speech has been among the people, and its effoot upon the public mind cannot be overestimated.It deals exhaustively and earnestly with the whole question of the paoifio Railway, takas up seriatim the objections of Mr.Blake, and disposes alnoost in a word, of the leading points in tke policy of the Opposition.Such spaorh is a ^remarkable contribution to the literature of the subject, and reveals thefpoUcy of tbeSGoverament in a patriot ic and spirited sense.It was delivered hi the Eoglish language, and may be regarded in the light of something of feat, fora French-speaking member to perform.Mr.Laxostdi made a very strong point toward the close of his re-nnirki, which in this connection, is worth plaemg on record here.In speaking of the plans submitted, and the exertions made by the Gevernment, he declared t at the amount proposed in the term* of the syndicate wts far less for the construction of the road, than had been men.Mooed In the pest, as the probable ooat •f the undertaking.Taking the price of the land at one dollar per acre, and adding thereto the amount of money already expended and to be expended, the sum total Is found to reach the sum of seventy-millions of dollars.It is on that r that the conclusions of the Govern-it have been made.Mr.Lajssstix also showed, clearly enough, that not only the railway be built by the con-bat it will be worked for all time to and—what is very important—the guarantees to be pieced in the hands of the Government are amply sufficient to ensure both these objects.Exemption from taxation, he looked upon as a mere temporary matter, the quantity of land to be exempt for all time to come being only equal to about 72 acres per township, and m those townships the state owned ten or perhaps twenty times ss much lands in the fame position and which will never be taxed.The railway which is to afford settlers a ready means of access to the markets of the world, will cost these inhabitants nothing bnt the t»xss which they would derive, rocs the taxes of these 72 acres of land par township.These notes from the Minister’s great speech should be read and thought over by everybody.The whole argument, however, furnishes food or the exercise of serious thought, and shows by parity of reasoning that the syn dieate can build the road cheaper and baiter than any Government, however laudable their intentions may be, from a variety of circumstances which must bo potent to every thinking and reading SPECIAL I-HUM HALIFAX Eauïax, N.S., Deo 20-Mr.Imne, one of the they plan tbe idea of time alter tbe verbal root, tbe aoilve verb af.er its object, the nominative after its possessive, the substantive after Its adjective ; while the reverse is the order ol the prepositional languages.Now tbs Ssqolmsox, the Thllnkeet, the Tlnneb, the Deootah end tbe Wyandot-Ltcquol* are postposition*!, while the others are prepositional.The initial position of the personal pronouns In tbe American postpositional language* connects them with tbe Tuigusto and Japanese-Korlak families of Asia.Tbe prepoiltlonal language of America can only relate to the large Ualay-Polynealan families.Grammatical resemblances or Use-lilies wen attested by evldencis of relationship famished by travsllors, by tiadtt'oos, coincidence In customs, arts, sports, religiso sad by concordant and ocanis alar les.It was thna shown that the Tlocsh are of Toognsio origin, the Dicotahs and Wyandot-Iroquois members of lbs Japanese-Korlak family, sad the AlgsnqolM with tbs tribes of tho Pselfl: coast of Mklby-Polynesian derivation.la conclusion, the lecturer at the request of the PresldenL touched upon the lately debated etymologies of the words Canada and Qnebee.Tbe former he maintained wss • Wyeedot-Iftqaeis word, oonneotisg, la all T>aPP£B’H QUININE end IRON JL TOJNIC contains an unvarying amount 0 quinine and iron.It poaeassea all the poi 0 these valuable tonies in banishing dise and symptoms tractable to weakness, a low s*ate of tha nervous system, enfeebled condition ot the body, and derangement of the general health.PEPPER’S QUINT TON IO strengthens the nervous and musoalar system, Improvos digestion, ar.iujalcs the spirits, recruits tbe heelth.For debilitated health from the effect of hot climates this tonle is Invaluable.PEPPER’S QUININE ard IRON TONIC rouses and developes tbe nor.vous energies, enrtehes the blood, promotes appetite, dispels languor and daprsssioa, fortifies tha digestive or van a.Is a speciflo remedy for neuralgia, ague, Indigestion, fevers of every kind, ones! affections, end in wasting diseases, scrofulous tendencies, Ae.The whole frame ii greatly invigorated by Pepper’s Tonie, the men tel too allies brightened, the oonstltation greatly strengthened, and a return to robust health certain.Bottles, 32 doses, 4*.6d.;
