Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

to the low’cst Javcros arc closely crowded. The prices paid in many cases are ridiculously high. The vast majority of visitors come from the provinces of the Peninsula, and among the foreigners the Portuguese French and Americans are most numerous. The weather has favored during the past ten days the horse races and annual fairs of San Isidro ns well as the Madrid “Feria en Prado.” The boulevards aro alive with tents and pavilions splendidly prepared for the dances and concerts which are every night to be given by the principal clubs and corporations of the capital. The sight in the streets since the fair opened is quite curious, as many visitors are attired in quaint provincial costumes, the bright colors of the women contrasting with the singular leggings, beaver bats, velveteen jackets and bright sashes of the men.The festivities of the centenary aie divined into popular entertainments and processions, and literary and scientific celebration which was inaugurated to-day by a distribution of the prizes of the relative contributors of essays and poems in honor cf Calderon. There was a very splendid ceremony in the Central Court of Madrid University, where a magnificent exhibition of armor, pictures, heirlooms, tapestries, documents and old furniture belonging to the Spanish nobility and grandees was opened by’ the King, Queen, Court and Ministers in great state.To-night a literary and musical festival was given by the Society of Artists and Authors in the Royal Opera House in the presence of 3,500 peinons. ' Monday and Tuesday were filled up by academical reunions, distribution of prizes, laying the foundation stone of an asylum for orphans, a medical congress, concerts and lectures.Every evening the principal theatres, and chiefly the classical Teatro Espanol, will give the most famed ploys of Calderon with the best actors of the Spanish stage.Great attention is shown by the authorities and by the Madrid press to distinguished foreign visitors, to foreign correspondents and diplomatists. They are conducted to the best seats at every fete, Nqt even, on the occasion of the royal marriage fetes of King Alfonso had the capital of .Spain witnessed such animation or been decorated so handsomely. Not even bull fights are wanting. The first of four to be given in the week was celebrated to-day with hulls from Andalusia and the four l(cst toreros—I^igartijo, Gor-dito, Cnrrito and Cazancha. No fears are any longer entertained that the centenary' will be disturbed by petards and explosions in the streets, as during Holy M eek, for the authorities have allowed the proprietors and managers of the gambling houses to reopen their roulette and rouge et noir tables during the last fortnight of the month of May, on the understanding that the prohibition will be renewed on the 1st of June.More than fifty gambling houses exist in Madrid besides the casino* and cafes, where play is carried on furiously every night.News distance away by the wind.Fences and trees are reported to have been blown down in the surrounding country districts. «.Through Train to Sherbrooke.—The first regular through train to-day by Quebec Central Railway, from Levis to Sherbrooke, is a matter of groat importance to the whole district of Quebec.Doubtless within a very short time, connections w ill be made by this line at Sherbrooke or Lennoxville, which will very materially lessen the distance now traversed by rail between Quebec and New York. The Sacked Com ert To-night.—A very fine programme has been arranged for the Sacred Concert which is to take place, at the Music Hall, this evening. The price of admission has liccn placed low, and wo feel sure that the house will lie crowded. There are many good voices Mr.Begeaxd’s French Company. The performance was under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor-General, w ho was present with his suite during the wdiolc performance, and who at the conclusion warmly congratulated the manager upon the highly artistic treatment which the Filay had received at the hands of Mdme.Jn-iette Clarence and the rest of the Company. This was no small compliment to be paid Mdme.Clarence, as His Excellency and sou-o of his staff had witnessed the playing some years ago of the some piece in Paris. The audience was a good one, still not as numerous as the merits of the artists and the comedy deserved. It is seldom that Quebec is visited by refilly good artists, ami when such an opportunity is afforded better support and appreciation should be displayed.A French company like the present one should, in this French-Canadian city, meet with the wannest welcome, especially when they aro presenting pieces in a mannev that would do no discredit to the Paris stage.Last night Mdme.Clarence as La Duchesse de Sept moule proved hcr right to be ranked among the great actresses of the day.It was apparent to many w he had the pleasure of seeing Saiah Bernliarat in Montreal, that Mdme.Clarei.ce has been trained in the same school and that she lias been as apt a pupil. There were many noticeable points of resemblance in the two artists. The elocution and enunciaticu of both are perfect.Mile.Bernhardt is very rapid in her reading while Mdme.Clarence is slower and thereby makes her points tell w ith effectiveness. Her action, g.-sture, and every movement are as graceful and as Batumi as was ever pictured by the great Sarah.Mdme.Clarance moved across the stage with the cosy and graceful motion of a swan. Her resemblance in feature to Mile.Bernhardt is remarkable, and ie depicted very strongly when she pourtrays intense pasrion.Tliis was especially the case in the fourth act where she denounced her worthless bus-hand for his unkinduesa.iSbe displayed at this point very high histrionic i.bilities.and was deservedly applauded for l.i i- effort. It w as as great a scene and ss effectively rendered as the fourth act of “Adrienne Lecouvreur,” which Sa rail Beni-haidt has made famous. In feet Mdme.Clarence’s personation last night deserves criticism. From the beginning to the end she was the noble, pure w oman, w hose heart was ruthlessly pained by the infidelities of a miserable husband.Si dine Clarence w as called before the curtain after each act and was loudly cheered and she was worthy of it.Her support was good.Especially, was this the case in Mr.Molina’s personation of the Yankee, Clarkson, who was "hot to be forced into injuring an innocent woman by her rascally husliaiid. The journalistic American was played to life.Mr.Bourgeois as Due de Sef-tmont*, Mr.Vernier as Maurieeau, and Mr.Dudley as Gerard, gave very satisfactory performances.Mdme De Lcstrac as Mistress Clarkson, is also deserving of a wont of praise for her excellent pourtrayal. The rest of the company were well up in their lines and gave every satisfaction.To-night a grand sacred concert will be given and Mdme Clarence will give several recitations from Victor Hugo.A Smart Traveler.[Burdette in Hawke ye.] j*"'"’.On the way to Terre Hante, a traveler with the air and appearance of a man who knew
