From the vicinity of Sherbrooke comes the •ad intelligence of a fatal burning.During the absence of the other members of the family in the fields, a son of Patrick Cel&ney, a farmer, of Rock Forest, approached a stove in the kitchen, a spark from which set fire to his clothing.The little sufierer was so severely burned that he survived hut a few hours.arm a perfect imprint or facsimile in mina-ture of the spruce tree under which he had taken refuge.Personals.Lieuts.Wurtele and Cochrane, on the staff of the Royal Military College, Kingston,have been attnehed during vaeatiou to the 19th Regiment, Halifax, N.3.Mr.Alfred Thibaudeau, merchant of Manchester, England, ami member of the firm of Thibaudeau, Bros.A Co., is in town and guest of his brother, Hon.I.Thibaudeau.Sir Hector Langevin returned to town last night by Intercolonial R.R.Lk-Col.Doherty, of the S4th Battalion, St.Hyacinthe, was in town yesterday on his way home from Cacouna.His Worship the Mayor and Madame Langelier have returned to town from Montreal.Mr.Gauthier, M.P, P., is at the Mountain Hill House.Quebec Turf Club Races.At a meeting of this Clnb held yesterday at the office of Andrew Stuart, Eaq-* James Patton, Esq., President, in the chair, ft was resolved to have one day’s racing on the Plains of Abraham, to be held in the course of a few weeks ; the date will depend upon the movements of His Excellency the Governor-General and H.R.H.the Princess Louise.The President and Secretary of the Club will wait upon the Viceregal party in order to ascertain if it will be agreeable to them to be present and the period suitable.In connection wdth these races, it might be remembered that a very pleasant feature exists in the fact that the valuable cap presented by His Excellency the Governor-General has been won three times, the stipulation being that it must be won twice by the same stable or owner.The three horses which won this cup are all at this time in splendid racing trim and likely t) be entered, viz.: Mr.Mead’s “Disturban e,” Mr.Dawes’ “Rose,” and Lt.-Col.Stua, t's “Pilot.’’ In addition to this there will be three or four other races for valuable prizes.OWt.In our obituary column to-day is recorded the decease of one of our most faithful, zealous and benevolent citizens, after an illness of considerable duration, borne with true resignation to the Divine Will, Eliza, eldest daughter of the late David Morgan, and wife of Peter Robinson* Esquire.The deceased lady will be missed by a great many persons, both rich and poor.Her generous and benevolent works were so constant and unostentatious that she had attained among her familiar acquaintances the name of “Florence Nightingale.” She was ever foremost in all good works, and in the execution of them considerations of health and comfort never prevented their completion ; in fact, notwithstanding her impaired health, she ofton were out on “errands of mercy and love,” when it was scarcely prudent to do so.In addition to the numerous unseen recipients of her outdoor benefactions the irmates of the Jeffery Hale Hospital, the Women’s Christian Association and the Protestant Home have to lament the death of one of their best and truest friends.Of th« last-named institution she was one of the few old surviving members and a constant visitor.From her childhood upwards it was ever her delight to be doing good.When her means were more limited than in her latter days, she often sacrificed even the necessaires of life that she might administer to the comforts and wants of others ; and, when God blessed her with a sufficiency, it might truly be said she gave half her goods to the poor.This short tribute to her memory is written that others may “go and do likewise.” THE 41570 9165 36900 87635 80027 629 Railway Ama ganmtlon.O&KAT WESTERN RAILWAY PASSES INTO THE HANDS OP THE GRAND TRUNK.We learn that the fusion of the Grand Trunk and Great Western Railway Companies will take place to-night, at 12 o’clock.After midnight the Great Western will become the property of the Grand Trunk, and be operated by its officials, and under management.168291 The above is very gratifying and affords much encouragement for the hope that our increase next year will be correspondingly large and important.The Colonization Companies, now forming and in process of formation in England, are likely to help the Government very much in peopling the w3d lands of the North-West with, a desirable class of settlers.Most of these companies start under very excellent auspices, and have at their head many influential and wealthy capitalists, and men of independent means.Their connection with the enterprise must have the effect of inducing confidence among the agricultural classes, who will naturally be guided in a very large measure, in the selection of thei* new homes, by what they are told by those in whom they have faith and can trust.The Ontario immigration returns for the six months ending 30th June, have just been sent out, and* exhibit some facts of great interest in this connection.Tho total number of arrivals during that period wera 56,206 ; 19,731 came by the St.Lawrence and Halifax, and 35,475 by the United States.Of the total number 36,820 are set down as having gone to the United States, 265 to the Province of Quebec, 5,904 to Manitoba, and 12,217 remained in Ontario.The nation alities were divided as follows :—English, 5,572 ; Irish, 3,456 ; Scotch, 1,966 ; German, 523 ; Scandinavian, 142 ; Swiss, 12 ; American, 456 ; other countries 90.About five times as many went to Manitoba as in 1881, although the number of arrivala for the first six months of that year was nearly as large, being 41,364 The complaint is •till made that the supply of farm laborers and domestic servants required for Ontario continues far short of the demand.The returns say that “of this class of immigrants the lion’s share has been retained by the Province of Quebec.” This reads like a chapter of old Peter Kalx, with improvements.The “lion’s share" could not have been very great, in any instance, judging from the returns published.its Financial .Agents.x We have much pleasure in drawing the attention of merchants, investors and business people generally, to the ox* ! 1 t August 9.1882.Se<b Is Wealth ! /: .j-j S - hÆ i ^TRCATMr': t * Dr.E.C.West’s Nerve and Brain Tbiat-mk.nt, a guaranteed specific for Hvsteria, Dizziness, Convulsions, Fits, Nervous Neuralgia, Headache, Nervous Prostration caused by the use of alcohol or tobacco.Wakefulness, Mental Depression, Softening of the Brain resulting in Insanity and leading to misery, decay and death, Premature Old Age, Barrenness, Loss of Power in either sex, Involuntary Losses aud Spermatorrhoea caused by over-exertion of the brain, self-abuse or cver-indnlgence.Each box contains one month’s treatment.One dollar a box, or six boxes for five dollar* ;
