Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
« [...] la direction de The Morning Chronicle, par conséquent, débute en déclarant simplement que, comme nous sommes très fiers de notre relation avec l'Empire Britannique, notre but sera sans détour de créer et d'entretenir un attachement aux honorables institutions britanniques, qui se sont grandement illustrées à travers l'histoire mondiale ». Sous Charles Saint-Michel (1849-1860), le journal devient le porte-parole des aspirations de la bourgeoisie commerciale anglaise et les sujets politiques prennent une part plus importante. L'esprit protectionniste, rattaché au torysme, teinte la rédaction. Durant la période de la Confédération, le Morning est utilisé comme tribune pour faire la promotion des idées de John A. Macdonald. Toutefois, l'attrait premier du journal reste avant tout la vie relative au commerce. En 1874, une fusion avec The Quebec Gazette met fin à une concurrence jugée ruineuse. Fondé en juin 1764, c'est l'un des plus vieux journaux d'Amérique du Nord. Une nouvelle entente survient en 1924. Pour mettre fin à une concurrence qui les affaiblit, le journal alors connu sous le nom de Quebec Chronicle and Quebec Gazette et le Quebec Daily Telegraph (fondé en 1875 par James Carrel, il défend les idées populaires et est reconnu comme étant libéral) s'associent et deviennent le Chronicle Telegraph. Les nouvelles prennent une place prépondérante dans les colonnes de la « nouvelle » publication. À partir de 1934, le journal est connu sous le nom The Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. Il paraît toujours aujourd'hui. interval of some weeks without the souuding of a fire alarm in the Ancient Capital, tae firemen were yesterday morning called out twice.The first alarm was at 6.30, and was caused by an incipient fire at No.43, O’Connell street, Montcalm Ward.The house was unoccupied and the fire savored st.^^-^ly of incendiarism.Owing to the alacrity of the firemeu, the damage was very slight,-At 9.45, the Brigade was again summoned by an alarm from box 42, for a fire in Arago street.It originated at No.245, in the brick building owned by Mr.G.Germain, and occupied below by Messrs.Ulric Germain 4 Bros, as a tannery, and the upper flats by Mr.O.Begin, as a currier’s shop.The firemen were promptly at the scene of the fire, and, aided by plenty of water and good management both in front and rear of the barniug, succeeded in confining the flames to where they originated and speedily extinguished what might have been a serious conflagration.It appears that the men in the currier’s shop were boiling tallow-used in preparing the leather, when it caught fire and speedily spread to the floor and ceiling.Fortunately for Mr.Begin; he was about discontinuing the currying business, having just purchased Metivier’s interest in the boot and shoe manufacturing trade, Nos.245 and 247 St.Valier street.He loses about $1,000 or $1,500 on stock, tools and machinery ; insured for $400 on why, 1 'expected to see le**aurayet in your streets, but instead I find a grand city, European in every respect, with equipages and costumes equal to Faria, and buildings and hotels unsurpassed in Europe ; I expected to be surprised, but not such asurprise as this ; after all I had heard of Canada I expected to find that Canadians had pictured it perhaps a little too much couleur de ro*e, aud that I would be disappointed, but truly I am more than pleased with it, with the activity and business push which evidently prevails, and with the advancement aud apparent prosperity of its people.” FRANCE IN EUROPE.Being asked if he apprehended any serious complications arising out of the present unsettled foreign policy of the French Government in Europe and in China, he said :—“No, I do not ; I do not look for any trouble in Europe at present.France desires to be at peace with everybody, and all those existing difficulties will soon be settled.By a cablegram I have just received I hear that the treaty between France and Tunis is to be submitted to the Chamber tomorrow so that evidently that question is in a fair way of settlement, ami, as a matter of fact, I consider that the political horizon of Europe forebones no evil in the immediate future.” CLERICAL AND ANTI-CLERICAL.M.Vermond as an enthusiastic supporter of the extreme left is, of course, a politician of strong anti-clerical proclivities, aud being asked if he was also anti-clerical in the colonies, he replied, decisively, “certainly not.” “And why, wherein lies the différence?" queried his interrogator.“In this : in France the clericals mix up and interfere in politics ; they use all the influence they can bring to bear in support of their respective candidates, and in so doing they overstep the bounds of their legitimate functions, but m the colonies in Africa and elsewhere the clergy have been the pioneers of civilization and Christianity, and as such I support them as fervently as I oppose them in France when they mix up in politics.” “Then in Canada you would notbeaoti-clerical ?” “Certainly not.” M.Vermond also visits Canada on behalf of the Franco-Canadian Colonization Company.He will visit all the properties acquired, visit the mines on the Labrador coast, and report to the shareholders in Faria, lie is accompanied by his son, whom he intends placing at the High School to learn English thoroughly, and who 'will in all probability settle definitely in Canada—&ar.WALLS’ ROUGH ON CORNS.Ask for Wells’ “Rough on Corns." 15c.Quick, complete, permanent cor' Corns warts, bunions Philadelphia boarding-houses are said to have made all tbe living skeletons now on exhibition.—Burlington Free Pres*.fiT In the Diamond Dyes more coloring is given for 10 cts than in any 15 or 25-cent dyes, and they give faster and more brilliant colors.The total debt of the United States on the 1st of August amounted to $1,894,726,962, which included $9,854,578 interest.No matter what may be the name, or how long standing the trouble.Dr.Benson’s Skin Cure will always cure skin diseases.Grateful hundreds of cured patients attest this fact, $1 at druggists.First grave digger—Have yon heard why the English dude is not wanted in America?First citizen—No, why ?F.G.D.—Because the Yankee dood’U do."/ buy Dr.Benson’s Celery and Chamomile Pills and introduce them wherever lyo.Personal knowledtfe and experience of their effects on others prompts this uct.” Rev.J.P.Fugett, Rector 8t.Lukes Ch., Myersburg, Pa.60 cents at druggists.A fresh air child, while riding home with one of oar farmers last Friday, saw a flock of sheep for the first time, and innocently inquired if they were bears.Scrofula or Kino’s Evil, Salt Rheum, and all Skin Diseases.—Th'se diseases can be cured, even when hereditary, by the judicious use of EAGAR’S PH03PH0LBINE.It is almost a specific for Salt Rheum and all Eruptions and Skin Diseases, which arise from defective nutrition and impure state of the blood.August 7,1883. jly23-34w “No,” said Mrs.McGill, “we didn’t celebrate All Fool’s Day at our house.The ’Squire never pays any attention to legal hollow days ;
