in rebel hands will carry an expedition to the coast to land and overthrow the Government in the interior.CANADIAN.Montreal, Oct.15.\u2014The final settlement of D.Morrice & Co.\u2019s affairs is made, one creditor, who has been holdin out for a month or more, having accepte a third payment of the extension obtained a year ago in full settlement of all claims against the estate.It will be remembered that under this arrangement the creditors will obtain 75 cents on the dollar of liabilities in cash payment, deemed more satisfactory than was anticipated at the time the extension was sought Mr.Morrice has pledged his estate and has enlisted the support of his friends in trade to enable this settlement to be made.The future of the cotton industry now promises better results than have been obtained for some months past Stocks are not excessive in the retailer\u2019s hands, and it is computed by good authorities that six months will suffice to briug the supply into close relation to the demand.When that time comes Aade will take on sharp activity, and that it cannot be long delayed is assured by the fact that the mills have diversified their productions and are £30,000.Enfalalula, Ala., October 15\u2014Lewis Montreal, Oct.15\u2014James Goldsmith, clerk of a shipping agent and Customs broker of this city, having failed to put in an appearance at business this morning, enquiries were made at his place of residence, when it was found that the bird bad flown, taking with him his wife and children.His late employer claims that he .has defrauded him to the extent of $1,200, and owes from $1,000 to $1,500 in small sums.Yesterday he received a large sum necessary to pay the usual entrance and clearance chargee at the Custom House, ____i which time he has not been seen.He borrowed money from a friend on Saturday and also abtained some furs previous to his departure.The absentee was an Englishman who came to the city about two yean ago, and who recently bas been living fcbove his means.A member of a wholesale firm ia also absent, but his creditors have signed a bond binding themselves not to prosecute him should he return.His brother has consequently gone to fetch home the absentee from acrow the border.Some time agç Percival Tibbs and the Bank of Montreal instituted actions against Thoe.Hodgson, the ex-merchant prince, in which Mr.Abraham Hodgson, of New York, was collocated aa creditor as well as the Hochelaga and Molson\u2019s Banks.In the course of the trial the latter contested Abraham Hodgson\u2019s collocation, on the ground that he was conspiring with Thoa.Hodgson to defraud his creditors to the extent of $300,000 for the benefit of two other firms they had in New York and Liverpool, causing thereby the failure of the Montreal firm.Upon this declaration on the part of Molson\u2019s and the Hochelaga Banks, Mr.Abraham Hodgson instituted a suit for $200,000 damages against them, alleging that libellous facts had been stated in this contestation.This morning Mr.Justice Loranger rendered judgment on the action for libel.He maintained that although the action for libel had been instituted while the case was yet proceeding the plaintiff had been right in doing so and threw out the objections of the defendant\u2019s plea, that procedure in a case was privileged and could not give rite to an indemnity except if declaration* were not pertinent to the case or if the party knew the facts stated to have been false The Court ordered the opening of the en-quete, stating that more evidence was required before Brighton.They were entertained at a banquet at Trenton in the evening and afterwards left for the Capital.Mr Caron\u2019s speeches were very enthusiastically received.He made a most favorable $40,-000 owing in great part to Montreal bouses.The liabilities of James Campbell A Sin, stationers and publishers, who suspended yesterday, are placed at from $200,000 to $250,-000.The assets as yet are unknown.The Merchaote\u2019 Bank is interested to the extent of $100,000.Mr.Hague, General Manager of the Bank, is here.It is probable a satisfactory arrangement will be arrived at.The failure of Barber Broa., wholesale woolen, Streetville, has startled business men here.The immediate oanse of the collapse is the pressure brought to bear on the firm by the Bank of Commerce, which is a creditor Crawford County last week and took refuge at the house of Esteridge\u2019s father, n««j- Unionville, where they resisted arrest On Saturday night 200 vigilants surrounded the house and a battle followed.Old man Esteridge was shot through the head, his youngest son through the body sod his daughter, wife of Miller, in the forehead, all fatally.Miller and Esteridge were wounded but escaped.If
