1807- It is said that for the possession of this island Germany would be willing to surrender Angra Pequena and the rest of the territory she claims on the east coast of Africa.The winter exhibition Hugues seemed to Be affected, bat she replied in a firm tone to tbe questions.She admitted the shooting was préméditât sd, declaring that since May 6, 1883.«he had resolved to kill her victim.The interfbga trires, as regards facts leading to the shooting, developed nothing new.The French national heart has never forgiven Waterloo and despite the cordiality that existed between tbe Empire and England, the old bitterness breaks out at times.At present the papers are indulging in a good deal of aaglophobia, and a curions specimen of vainglory and dislike of its neighbours across the channel is exhibited in Le Pari*.That paper says that the past year has been a year of glory tor the French army and navy, and that Tooquin, Foo Chow and Formosa are points of departure of a new era.and adds doctors give very little hopes of her recovery.There is no doubt that her insanity was cans-sd by her solitary confinement, a punishment which M.Rochefort says is a revolting system of torture.Louise Michel was a misguided, but she was not a bad woman.Her communism was the result of her observation pf tbs wretchedness of the poor, end it cannot be laid against her that she did not practice what she preached.It is well remembered that on her voyage to New Caledonia she was p mother to her sick fellow-convioto, and ¦hand with them her very clothing to her own serious deprivation.M.Rochefort, referring to her insanity, says it was undoubtedly produced by prison discipline, and that while be was an exile he saw within six months ten prisoners who were under-going solitary inpriaonment perished.CANADIAN.Montreal, Jan.8\u2014The water in the river has fallen about ten inches since yesterday moruiog.A large portion of open water on the south side of the river is covered with lake Jce, which floated down during the night.On New Year\u2019s Day there was a large gathering of quarrymeo in Rabelle\u2019s Hotel, Terrebonne.A lively discussion took place, during which a young man named Dube, aged 21, on being provoked, struck one ol them, a arter, named Brilliere.No other trouble occurred until yesterday afternoon, at about 5.30, when four of the men who had a grudge against Dube, and who, it is said, were jealous of his strength, waited for him at the corner of a street, near Rsbelle\u2019s Hotel, and there and then challenged him to fight.On his refasai to fight, the whole four of them fell upon him, and in the scofiie that followed stabbed him about the head and neck.The mi'creacts then ran off.It was only when, some time afterwards, Dube was found lying on the ground that it was discovered that he had been stabbed io several places.He was taken hume, where he died four hoars afterward.Brilliere and a man named Edmond were subsequently arrested, and more arrests are expected.Dube, who comes from Rimoos-ki, is spoken ot as being a man of extraordinary strength, and possessed of mnch skill as a fighter, thus rendering his companions jealous.An inquest will bo held.The Stock Market is steady at yesterday\u2019s prices.Ottawa, Jan.8\u2014Chief of Police Grant, who ha* been suffering for some time past, leaves for the South for the benefit of thi« health.The doty on Mother Baum\u2019s diamonds, which were seized at Hamilton, will bo upwards of $500, which the department has decided she must pay.During the past year there were 2,458 parents issued in Canada ; the fees were $69,-520, against $72 023 for tbe previoos year, a falling off uf $3,504.Two workmen, who arrived here from the Lake Superior section of the Canadian Pacifia Railway, state that to institute an action against the directors of the Exchange Bank fur his deposit of $67,000.A difficulty has cropped up between the Customs authorities here and the \u2018Eclipse\u2019 Wringer Company of New York.Several cases of fancy docks were consigned to the \u2018Eclipee\u2019 Company here by its New York representative and upon passing the Customs were considered by the authorities yesterday.It is reported Mr.Chamberlain threatens to resign, desiring to recover his liberty and Radical leadership.Dublin, Jan.8\u2014Writs have been issued at the instance of tradesmen against the Corporation to prevent the changing of the names of streets by that body.Parnell addressed a meeting in Tipperary to-day.Poor years ago, he said, the men ot Tippetary helped to unfurl the banner of the League there.The movement had become historic sod proved of great service to the Irish people.A similar point in the history of Ireland had now been reached.What the agitation had already gained was infinitesimal compared with the full reward to be secured by it.Parnell ' laid he believed the great powers of franchise recently conferred would be judicially used, although in an alien Parliament.He promised the farmers the fall fruits ot their toil and much larger reductions than tbe pretended fair rents of the Land Court,' which meant bankruptcy, would give them.Landlordism would soon disappear when really fair rents were obtained.Ho looked forward to an extension of the Laborers Act to give laborers a share in their national heritage, and advised tenant-farmers in justice to known ot the terrible experience of a Japanese student.In September while on his way to Massachusetts to study a textile machine in mills of the State, he came from Troy over the Housac tunnel route.A young man on the cars made him believe he had been pat on the train for Canada and that he was to be made a slave in the Dutninion.The Jap became desperate and jumped from the flying train near Concord Junction.He lost consciousness on striking the ground and remembers nothing until hs regained his senses in a hot in the woods, some tramps having found him and taken him to their den ; they robbed him of a gold watch, money and jewelry, and beat bim till they supposed him dead.They then threw his body into a thicket.How long he lay there he does not know ; when he regained bis senses he dragged himself out and succeeded in reaching the house of a farmer, where he was cared for.He has not yet entirely recovered from his injuries.Jersey City, N.J., Jan.8\u2014James O\u2019DjII, a blacksmith, applied to the pilioe tonight to have removed from his house a religious crank, who had installed himself as a member of his household with Mrs.O Dell\u2019s approval.The crank was with wm the indignant cry, FRANCE.Paris, Jan.8\u2014During the trial to-day, Madame Clovis Hagues declared that she had offered Morin to apply for a remission of his sentence if he would retract the calumnies he bad circulated about her.Morin returned an insulting reply.In concluding, Madame Hugues said : \u201cIf you believe me guilty, condemn me ; if you can understand the moral tonnres I have endured, acquit me.\u201d These words were uttered in a firm and energetic tone.She appeared to make a favorable impression on the jury.In reply to a remark from one of the Judges, that marder was unjustifiable, especially after fifteen months\u2019 premeditation, she said, \u201cYou would uot reason to coolly if you bad suffered as I have,\u201d and the prisoner proceeded to unfold the unremitting and atrocious character of the persecution to which she had been subjected.During tbe narrative she became very much excited.Madame Huguea was acquitted of tbe murder of Mot in, but ia condemned to pay $400 damages and the cost of the trial.The Coart room during the trial wm so thoroughly crowded that people sat at tbe feet of the Judge; anxious attendants even ted themselves beneath the tables of the lawyers.The toilets of the ladies present were brilliant and contributions from gardens and hot-houses gave the Court room the appearance of a conservatory.Madame Hugnes admitted in her testimony that she would have killed «Madame Le Normand or her rivate agent, Clarget, but for the fact that toth said Morin wm responsible tor the calumnies heaped upon her.Tbe presiding Judge\tin his\tcharge said the cards which hid been sent to Madame Hugues were of so indecent a character as to justify him in preventing them from being read in the Court-room, but they would be laid before the jury for their consideration.An exciting dialogue occurred daring the proceedings between Madame Hagues and tbe Judge.Tbe Judge said Morin did not write the objectionable carde.The prisoner insisted that they were dictated by Morin and challenged any one to find the pereon who did write them.M.Forge, member of the Chamber of Deputies, in addressing the Court, was emphatic in\this praise of tbe ac- tion of Madame Hugues and so vehement ia the declaration of his endorsement that the Judge imposed a severe rebuke upon him.The addresses to the jury were of considerable length, and the verdict of \u201cnot guilty\u201d wm the signal for tremendous applause.Tbe popular sympathy for Madame Hagues wm aemonatreted by vociferous shouts and
