extent, as to which security they will put their money into, speculators look to the state of the market, both for money and for the quantity of stcck held iu the street or in other words ou speculation, as to how they will be guided in their transactions.That this is the case evident from the firm price of such stocks as Merchants, Ontario, and Peoples Banks which have held strong in an otherwise weak market.In the former institution only some 1600 shares are held on speculation, a very small number considering the size of its capital.In the two last named securities few transactions have taken place and in all three the prices have remaiued almost stationary On the other hand Commerce stock, of which there is a larger proportion in speculation has dropped considerably, selling down from 124i regular to 120 to day ex-dividend.There 's much speculation as to the annual report of this bank.Rumour has it that the \"Rest account\u201d is to be reduced, and judging from the decline in price of the stock it j.ooks as if this might be the case, been more speculation in \"miscellane-ous \u201d than in Bank stock, Richelieu having been the feature, opening at 61i to 62 on Monday, selling down yesterday to 58 and clcsing to-day at 59 to 59L As we have mentioned previously, this stock is look liafpy, and yet it is a well known fact that brokers never speculate, at least they ought not to if they are wise, judging from the result of the Chicago wheat deal this week in which some produce biokera were apparently interested, but then they are not like our own quiet stock brokers, who deal \"strictly on commission.\u201d An insurance agent earned Duquette has been arrested on a charge of forging the name of Edouard Giroux to a promieory note.Wilfred Paquin, who fell yesterday from the roof of the National Express office and fractured his skull, died this morning.Montreal, June IS\u2014 Special jubilee services were held in all the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Congregational churches to-day.The form of prayer used in the Anglican churches, was that prepared by the Archbishop of Cauterbury.ONTARIO.Ottawa, June 18\u2014The English.made ammunition in Canada will be served out by the Government for the brigade camps this summer.This will about exhaust the stock of this ammunition.In future the Cauadrau make will be used.Hon.Oliver British Columbia.The number of vacancies in the college is 24.On the recommendation of the Minister of Justice, the Govern or-General has commuted the death sentence of Shearer, of British Columbia, to imprisonment for life.The phy.sicians who have examined the murderer say he is instne.The execut\u2019on was fixed for July 6th.Information was received by cable this afternoon that Dr.J.A.Grant, of this city, has been created by Her Majesty a Knight Commander of the Order of St.Michael and St.George, in recognit on of his services to science and the medical profession.Toronto, June 18\u2014The colored woman camel Jackson, who was stabbed by her husband last night, is in a critical condition.The.-e are ten different wounds in her body, and, had she not besn a fleshy woman, she would undoubtedly have beeo stabbed to death.Jackscn was arrested and brought before the Police Court this morning, and pleaded guilty to feloniously wounding his wife, but denied having stibbed his
