Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

QUEBEC, NOVEMBER 10, 1898.The Meutxemery Monument.Flsewhers will be found several vigorous protests against the erection of a monument to General Montgomery iu Quebec. The discussion of the proposal to perpetuate the fate of the invader has, it seems, vince of Ontario than in this city.Hence, one rather over zealous organization has undertaken to petition the Secretary of State against the monument. This action might be uuderstood if it were intended to place à monument here on Federal property, but that is not proposed. No application has been made to erect a memorial on civic property and, if it were, the Quebec City Council, rather that the Secretary of State, would decide the matter. Some six or seven years ago the Council gave its consent unanimously to the placing of = memorial in this city, provided the plan and inscription were approved by the civic authorities. That consent has not been revoked, but it does not carry with it permission to use civic “property for the purpose. At present there is no proposal before the public to allot space in ‘any of the streets, parks or public places for » memorial to General Montgomery. It seems, therefore, that theprotests are premature and that, though they may arise from the best of motives, they place this city in the false position of being asked to refuse what is not at present offered.——————————— taken more aggravated shape in the Pro- ge! interesting exposé was furnished by La Minerve, of Montreal, which on Monday last published an article, the drift of which can be well understood from the extracts published be low.The Montreal Conservative organ said: “More than ever Mr.Pacaud is aftor Laurier and threatens to be avenged. If they will not listen to the journalist, though he be the editor of the Soleil, they will have more respect for the member of Parlia- | ment, so Mr.Pacaud has almost decided to t himself as a candidate for the House of Commons to Dr.Guay, who haa been named at last to the Quarens tine much of his own money he spent for thm.Mr.Pacmud denies that be was guilty of anything more than an excess of devotion. He continues :—It is true that Mr.Pacaud Spent rauch money for the organuation of the Liberal forces, specially from 1878to 1892.Bat it is a repetition of au old calumny to say that the money came from illezitimate sources and that the Liberals knew it.Mr.Pscaud had already taken part in electoral fights for a long time, when in 1878 he assumed, with Bon.Rosaire Thibandeau, of Muntreal, the organisation of the campaign which ended in the return to power of Mr.Joly.Mr.Pacaud collected a certain amount of subscriptions amongst rich members of the party in Montreal and Quebec, but he also spent a great deal of his own money.MR.PACAUD'S LAW PRACTICE.Figures are then given to show that in 1878 Mr.Pacaud, like Mr.Laurier, had one of the lagmest law practices in the Eastern Townships. The record shows in fact 228 non-ap; ble and 18 appealable cises to to March, 1880, when the Chapleau Government dismissed him for political reasons, amounted to $10,000 a year. But this salary did not suffice to enable him to psy the obligations he had assumed for his amounting to $75,000 a year, to L'Electeur. The Patrie was excluded, beesuse Mr.Beaugrand had so far refosed to join the national movement. The profits on this printing amounted to not lesy than $15,000 Mr.Pacaud declares that he spent, not only the whole of that sum for his party, but also $5,000 mare, for which he mortgaged his property, and that he had to run still further into debt for the purpose of defending himself in his criminal trial together with Mr.Mercier, which resulted in their acquittal. He declares that the Minerve speaks falsely when it says that his political friends knew
