Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

every point of vièw, Financially, there is ample room for satisfaction, as the coffers of the band fund will, no doubt, be considerably replenished.From the social standpoint the brillianey of the gathering on the grand stand and officers’ gallery was generally commented upon.Spectacularly the show was more than up to the expectations of the audience.Last but not least the representatives of the corps and all who took part acquitted themselves well.The Queen's Own men, for volunteers, greatly surpri everyone by the fine showing they made.They were in the cavalry meleé bythe R.C.A., ; but defeated the regularsin the tug-of-war on horseback and in the Victori# Cross * competition, and achieved a sweeping vic- 1 tory in the wrestling ou horseback, having only one man out of twelve dismounted.They have been practising hard for a fortnight, but hardly snyone ex them to show up so well.The Queen's Own are in a degree indebted the Tournament.| The Lie mb deciding pull was desperately fought eut, and victor rched alternately on thé banners of the contending parties.First the R.C.A.seemed to v8 a alight advantage, and then the Queet's Own men made a cor responding overcome.In the bicycle obstacle race the partiei- pants had to go through network of rope, then through some suspended barrels, the hurdles, and finally ride once round the shed, diving through some barrels, on the ground, en route, and then resuming their wheels.W.Holliday, Q.O0.0.H., had the race all his own way until he came to the last barrels, where he mada a mistake and allowed W.Taylor, 8th R.R., to pass him, but tuok second .Sergt.Jas.Norton, No.6 Company, 8th R.R., won the heavy marching order race, with Conway.of the R.C.A., second.The race was a hard ome, marked by constani the hearty co-operation of the Husnavn.Most of the officers of the Garrison were present with their ladies and seemed to heartily enter into the fun of the evening.In fact so general was the enjoyment that the Hussars may well contemplate making an annual affair of the tournament, though in view of last night's experience such items as the greasy pig competition may, with advantage, be omitted in the future.Captains W.J.Ray, 8h R.R., H.A.Panet, R.C.A., Ouellet, 9th Batt., and Edmond Laliberte, Quebec Field Battery, acted as Judges, and gave general satisfaction in that capacity.In the bayonet exercise competition two teams were entered, those of the R.C.Aand of the 8th R.R.The first mentioned team did their exercise in the best time, but made several inistakes almost unper- donable in regulars.The Kighth team was rather slow in its movements but kept well together and made no glaring error.Sergeant Hay was in charge of the latter | team, and Sergeant-Major Raimbault of the former, who were awarded the palm.| In the physical drill thers was no team entered against the R.C.A., who gavea very pretty exhibition, though it again in the first practices was mai by mistakes.MOUNTED WRESTLERS.The wrestling on horseback was one of the best events of the evening and proved a sweeping victory for the Hussars, who had as opponents the mounted division of the C.A.There were two as.saulta.In the first the six cavaleymen dismounted a like number of rivals without the loss of a single man.In the second only one of their party came down.It did at first sight seem somewhat unfair to havo six men hauling at a solitary individual, who had lost ail his friends in the struggle, but it was after all only a repetition of the fortunes of war.© half-mile flat race was won by Duncan, of the R.C.A., with Shee, of the Q.0.C.H., second.The latter claimed a foul, and seemed to have some ground for his complaint.The tug-of-war, dismounted, was a good hot contest and consisted of only a single pull, won by the R.C.A.from a scratch tean from Q.0.C.H, and 8th R.R.The R.C.A.men were a splendid looking lot and pulled in n munner that well desurved victory.‘The contest of the Knights of Malta was a very amusing and short lived one in which the Eighth Royal Rifles fairly downed the Hussars.One of the former's champions momentarily forgot himself and broke bis lance over a rival's head,—a most un- knightly action,—and was warned by the judges.A MOUNTED PULL.The tug-of-war between the Q.O.C.Hand B Battery, R.C.A., was a stiff and obstinately contested event aud created the greatest excitement.In fact only when the judges’ award was announced could the spectators tell who had won.In the first pull the R.C.A.had slightly the advantage, and it seemed as if they would be the ultimate winners, The second heat, however, told a different story, and the volunteers pullud their oppouents.COSTUMES WORE BY THEN MILITARY FORORBR OF THH BRITISH EMPIRH.were fastened was a very subdued member of the porcine family, crushed in body as well as in spirit, that was left at the end of the greasy pig competition, and a many felt genuire pity for the unfortunate animal.He had no pretensions ns a sprinter, and even the terror at seeing a gang of howling savages after him, which might have been expected to lend wings to his flight, seemed to be totally wanting.Before he had gone half a dozen paces some 30 or 40 lovers of pork had fallen upon bim, in an endeavor to clasp him to their hearts, while those who could not reach the animal himself did their best to tear each other to pieces.At one time the old crowd seemed to be lying in one heap upont he unfortunate, hoy who all the time squealed most dismally.Finally after a second attempt he was awarded to Gunner J.Kennedy, of the R.C.A.It is to be presumed that Kennedy's recentscrimmagetraining stood him in good stead in this capture.It certaimly was a popular one.One of the most novel and amusing incidents of the evening was the band race.In it the band of the Q O.C.H.was drawn up in line at onc end of the shed and started to play a lively march.They had to run to the other end and back again, still keeping up the time and air of the march.is they did very well and deserve great credit for their performance.Wilfred Rousseau, who plays the cymbals, won the race.This brought the evening to an end at 11 o'clock, and the only fault that anyone had to find was that the programme was not run off more quickly.It would he a serious oversight to close this report without a reference a ferry across the St.Lawrence, at Murray Bay, which will give them railway connection at Riviere Quelle.At present the connection be.tween Murray Bay and the first railway station on the route to Quebec on the line of the Que bec, Montmorenci and Charlevoix Railway necessitates a drive of some 67 miles.Not oly will the proposed furry be a very great boon to the people of all the country between Murray Bay and the Saguenay during the whole of the winter season, by giving them an easy outlet, but it will also prove a splendid feeder to the Intercolonial Railway.Tha city of Quebec is interested in the scheme, not alone from a desire to accommodate its neighbors of the County of Charlevoix, but also because it will bring our merchants’ customers in that eouuty into closer touch withthe business of the place throughout the winter season.A Quebecer on Atticus, In our own day, as in olden times, quite an affinity is noticeable between banking and literature.The names of George Hague and of D.R.Wilkie readily occur to Canadians as amongst those of their fel- low-countrymen who have made for themselves a reputation, as well by the scholarly nature of their published papers and public addresses as by their prominence and success in banking.Quebec has had in the past, and in fact may still claim, amongst the managers and other officers of che banks doing business here, à number of bright and studious intellects, with literary attainments and tastes far above the common.The close application to business and tbe indulging of other tastes in leisure hours have often, no doabt, deprived their friends of the pleasure of heiring more from them upon the lecture platform or in the pages of contemporary literature.Those belonging to this class of our fellow- citizens who have gratified their literary friends in either of the directions above indicated have invariably scored a signal success.Two remarkable instances of this may be cited.The late Mr.James Stevenson, for many years Manager of the Quebec Bank, occupied for a considerable time, the position of President of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, He was the author of a paper on the war of 1812, as well as of several essays on banking matters, such as those entitled Currrency, With Reference to Card Money in Canada During the French Domination and The Currency of Canada After the Capitulation.The other case just now in mind is thit of Mr.Stevenson’s successor in the Quebec Bank, Mr.Thomas Me- Dougall.In an article, as learned as it is charming in literary style and finish, upon the Roman banker—Titas Pomponious Atticus, —contributed by Mr.McDougall to the October number of the Journal of the Canadisn Bankers’ Association, the reader is treated to an instructive description of the methods of business and finance in the most interesting period of Roman bistory, and is reminded of the close intimacy existing at that time, in one case at least, between banking snd letters.For the Atticus of whom Mr.McDougall writes, was not only a Roman banker of high standing and wide experience, but the friend of Cisero, Hortensius and Cornelius Nupos, and the wgthor of several works, including » history of Rome down to 54 B.C., dedicated to Cicero, and an edition of the latter's lotters.He also did great service to the cause of literature by setting his numerous slives to work at copying the writings of.his contemporaries, while a life of himself which we still posnces, and of which Mr.McDougall has wadp most judicious use, was written by Cornelius Nepoe.Perhaps the 23 years’ residence cf Atticus in Athens had something to do with forming and establishing his tastes.It would be strange indeed if the air of culture, refinement and leisure which pervades the Athens of this Dominion did not sharpen and whet the intellectual and literary appetito of those with similar tastes to those of the grest Roman benkes, It will doubtigss surprise many of those who have not hitherto given much thought or research to the matter, to find that though the Bank of England only dates from 1694, and the Bank of Scotland, — the first institution of the kind north of the Tweed—was established in 1695, the Romans possessed State banks privr to the Christian era.The officers of these banks were legally bound to keep their books with strict accuracy, and in case of dispute to produce them for purposes of legal proof.book, in which receipts and payments were entered, with the date, the person's name and the occasion of the transaction ; the liber rationum, in which every client bad a special page setting out his debit and credit account ; and the diary for the entry of business still in hand.Att.cus was, however, a private bunker.He opeued up business in Home between the years 60 and 70 B, C., with a capital represeuting about half a million dollars.Banking in Rome, in latter Republican days, was conducted largely upon accommodation paper, and Mr.McDougall's essay is deeply interesting in its description of the various borrowing clusses of those days, and in the insight which he affords into the politics), sucial and fiscal problems of those troublous times.The road travelled by the Roman banker of old, with its fluctuations in the rate of interest, the The buoks were of three kinds,—the cash | P°8! difficulty of collections, the struggle of conflicting lenders and the varying risks assumed by different dealers in accommodation paper, bears a striking resemblance to the rough and rugged way trodden by the banker of our own diy.Apart from the intrinsic literary value of Mr.Me- Dougall’s paper, its publication is timely as indicating to the younger members of his profession that in modern, as in olden times, the men who have risen to its greatest heights have been thoss who have carefully studied and familiarized them: selves with the history and the science o their chosen art.—— ES PRRSUNAL GOSSIP.The Lord Bishop leaves town sgain tomorrow for work at Lennoxville, Fiteis Bay, Georgeville and Magog, returning early next week.x» Lieut.-Colonel White, heretofore have been the Muurve doctrine and non-interference in the complications and ambitious designs of European nations.Before the Rev.Dr.Henry Van Dyke quoted Tennyson's **England and America Lord Herachell in New York, the other night, he to'd vf an incident connected with it which was new to his hearers.Dr.Van Dyke said that he visited Tennyson some time after this poem had been printed in an American paper, andthe poet, apparently, felt thathe had been overpaid fur it.The posm was of only twenty-five lines, and yet the American publisher had given him 1,000 guineas, which was very much more than the market rate even for Tennyson's work.In speaking of the poew, Tennyson told Dr.Van Dyke that te had intended to devote à part of the price received for it tosome Americin charity, and with that end in view , he had written tu the American Minister to the Court of St.James's asking how he might best expend the money.“My letter was never answered,” concluded Tennyson.“I suggested to hin,” said Dr.Van Dyke, ‘that the Minister was probably too busy writing on poker to reply to him.” It was not improbable that some of Dr.Van Dyke's New Overcoatings at Morgan's.’ Gaiety Theatre.This house was well filled last evening with a representative audience, which es- sembled to witness the first production of Fanchon the Cricket.It was presented in elaborate style, and the effects and details were woll worked up.Blanche Dayne, an Cricket, was the life of the evemng, and to judge by the hearty applause bestowed upon this little favorite, her success hereis firmly established.A.L.Fanshawe made an excellent Landry, and Chas.Cline, Harry Gormaud, Bart.Ford, C.L.Maitland, Nellie Gloser, Ned Curtis, Marie LaBrahy and Janey Wood were very good in their respective roles.The specialties were very good, aspecially J.Hadz Lessik, who spins guns and other objects in a wonderful manner.This was his firat ap- rance here, and his success was genuinc and well merited.To-night The Little Cuban, Mr.Fanshawe's latest war drama, treating of the late Hispano-American war, will be seen hure fur the first time.All special scenery is used in this piece, and a feature of the production is the blowing up of the battleship Maine.To-night the Q.D.R.will give their second annual theatre night at this house and a most enjoyable time is anticipated.Several local favorites will appear, among them being Pte.Jordan, who will be seen in his club swinging specialty, A St.Petershurg rej states that the frozen surface of the River Suchona, Arvelictusting, broke yesterday while a number of people and vehicles were crossing the stream.ond that twenty persons were drowned.’ TO CURE À OOLD IN ONE DAY.Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets.Ail Druggista refund the mosey if is fails to Ours March 96 1896 | in 1782” atthe Lotos Club's dinner to pret HATS AND BONNETS.Fashion gives such license in the matter of hats that there is no excuse fur a woman to don an unbecoming head- covering.There are tiny bonnets, consisting of scarcely more than an aigrette and velvet bow.There are capotes, bordered with for and top-heavy with birds or feathers.The next increase in size is shown in tip- tilted hats with widely flaring bows.Gradually the evolution brings us to the mammoth picture hat, the consternation of all theatre-goers.In general design and trimming the hats are more brilliant than ever before.Iridescent effects in plumage, buckles of paste wrought in perfect imitation of costly jewels, bright loops of velvet or clusters of flowers make the fashionable hat a gorgeous color scheme.Strings and ties have returned and are noted on large and small hats.The narrow ties are used on small bonnets and toques, and are more affected by mstrons.The broad, fluffy ties of chiffon are an attractive and useful feature of the big hat.They not only help to hold the hat in place, but are wonderfully becoming knotted under the chin.Parisian capotes show a great amount of fur.Chinchilli, sable and fox form the entire foundation of many of these chic little hats.Again the fur nestles in a tiny bunch about the hair, a little bunch peeping from under the brim.Birds are used singly and in flocks.A single bird must be of heroic proportions.Parrots and owls are the favorites.Their heads look wisely from the front of the toque, while the wings curve back to the aides in broad effect.When several birds are used they perch jauntily in flocks of four, five or siz.Swallows, ininiature seagulls and bright- eyed sparrous are ul A beautiful toque of Cyrano red velvet shows a flight of blackbirds, apparent] held in place by & quaint jet buckle.This was imported for a prominent woman of fashion.Another capote of blue velvet shading of | into several hues has five bluebirds clustered about the brim.These birds are shaded according to Parisian fancy.Their wings catch the iridescent hues of the peacock, while their breasts are white.Parrots are no longer confined to the conventional coloring we are accustomed to in those loquacious birds.They disport themselves in all the fashionable hues ; so can be combined more readily into becoming hats.Owls alone are allowed to retain nature's coloring.Brown is the most fashionable color, 80 the owl's plumage tones in very tily.Birds and fur are confined to the small hats.The big picture hats are 1aden with ostrich feathers, with frequently an array of stiff wings.A PECULIAR REMEDY.Something about the New Discovery for Curing Dyspepsia.The Rev.F.I.Bell, a highly esteemed minister residing in Weedsport, Cayugs Co., N.Y., in a recent letter writes as follows : “There has never been anything that I have taken that has relieved the Dyspepsia from which I have suffered for fen Le yao he pow remedy called tuart’s Dyspepsia ots, Since taki them I have Fad no distress at all ster eating and again after long years can sleep well.Rev.F.L.Bell, Weedsport, N.Y., formerly Idalia, Colo.Stuart's Dyspepeis Tablets is n remarkable remedy, not only because it is a certain cure for all forms of indigestion, but because it seems wo act thoroughly in old chronic eases of dyspepsia as woll as in mild attacks of indigestion or billiousness.A person has dypepsia simply’ because the stomach is overworked, all it wants is a harness, vegetable remedy to digest the food und thus give it the much needed rest.This is the secret of the success of this uliar remedy.No matter how weak or ow disordered the digestion may be, Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets will digest the food whether the stomach works or not.New life and energy is given not only to the stomach but to everyforgan and nerve in the body.A trisl of this splendid medicine will convince the most skeptical that Dyspepsia and sll stomach troubles ean be cured.The tablets are prepared by the F A.Stuart Co., of Marshall, Mich., but so popular has the remedy become that Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets can now be obtained at any drug store at 50 cents per package.Send for book on stomach 5 easos free.S.J.SHAW & C1, 18 St.John Street, Upper Town, 87 Sous-le-Fort Street, Lower Town.HALL STOVES ! Geo.W.Craig and Alf.Dumas, and on bis left, Hon.Chas.Fi rick, Mayor J.E.Roy, of Levis ; Mr.V.Morin, N.P., of Montreal, Vice-Supreme Chief of the Order ; Mr.Breton, Gunersl Organizer of the Order ; Messrs.Emile Trudel and Eric Doron, Secretaries.After full justice had been rendered to the splendid bill of fare provided by Mr.Beliveau, the popular Manager of the Chatesu, the Chairman called upon Mr.Dorion, one of the Secretaries, to read some letters.The latter read letters apologising for non-attendance from Lieutenant-Governor Jette, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Hon.Mr.Marchand, Mayor Parent, Dr.Qronbyateka, and Profwe hai h posed the health e irman then the healti of the Queen, which day honored, the guests singing the National Anthem.The health of the Governor-General dud the Lieutenant-Governor were proposed.In rising to propose the health of the guest of the evening, Mr.Lavery remarked that no doubt some of those present were anxious to know why they had met there last evening.He would tell them that at the last meeting of the Order of Independent Foresters, Mr.(0.W.Bedard, a merchant of this city, was elected High Chief Ranger of the Order for the Province of Quebec.This election was not only an honor to the city, but also to the French-Canadian members of the Order.The Chairman then entered into the history of the Order, and gave some very interesting statistics.In 1876 the first three Lodges were established in Canada and in 1881 when Dr.Oronhyateks was appointed Supreme Chief Ranger there was a membership of 376 and a deficit at the end of the year of $4,000.Dr.Oronhyateka liss occupied ever since the position of Sume Chief of the Order and to-day the ler consists of 140,000 members with a sarplus of $3,150,000.MR.BEDARD SPEAKS.The toast was received with great en- shusiagm and in rising to respond Mr.began by remarking that he was deeply affected by this spontaneous demonstration, which would always remain an event in his life, and he considered it & great honor to have been elected to the position he now held in the Order.He had great faith in the Order of Independent Foresters and sad that the numerous other benevolent societies showed zeal in rivalling it.Benevolent societies differed greatly from insurance companies, as they had no shareholders to enrich, consequently their rates were much lower.The motto of the L.O.Fwas Liberty, Benevolence aud Concord, and under that flag al! creeds and denominations were welcome.After giving statistics of the Order siuce its Fundacion, Mr.Bedard spoke in English, thanking the English-speaking members for turning up in such large numbers.Their presence there lhat evening was sufficient proof that both nationslities pulled well together in the Order.If our brothers in other Provinces understood us as well as we should understand them, it would be of great advantage to she Dominion.Mr.Bedard sat down amidst great applause.At the request of the Chairman, Mr.Geo.Craig, ex-Chief Ranger vf Stadacona Lodge, in a few well chosen remarks, proposed the heaith of the Dominion of Canada, and called upon Hon.R.R.Dobell to respond.MR.DOBELL'S SPEECH.The member for Quebec West, who was received with great applause, began by thanking the I.O.of F.on behalf of the Dominion of Canada, for the honor conferred upon one of its members by in- vizing him to be present at the buwnquet.When he received hus invitation to attend a Foresters’ banquet he first expected to meet a number of lombermen, but his neighbor, Mr.Bedard, had during the evening explained to him the objects of the Order, and he now thought he would join the Foresters.(Loud opplause).Hon.Mr.D bell then referrcd to the future prosperity of the city of Quebec, and remarked that we were now on a springtide of prosperity, and he felt satisfied that all those present were of the eme opinion.He alluded to the canals and waterways of Canada, and remarked that alibough Mears.Peterson, Tate & Co.bad failed in securing a fast line service for Canada, nevertheless the acheme was pot abandoned.He, the speaker, had crossed the ocean on three different occasions in relation to the fuat line matter, and although he bait to admit that he had failed in securmg the fast line 20 far, he had unt given up all hope, and he was leaving on Saturday next for the Ol Country and hoped th it satisfactory results mizht fu'low this visit of his to the shipbuilding world Uther toasts proposed were that of the Province of Quebec, by Mr.proposed Enule Trudel and responded to by Hon.Bedard was cheered to the echo.He | and Mr.Dechene.Mayors of Quebec and Levis, proposed by Dr.Lord, responded to by Mr.KE.Roy, Mayor of Levis ; the Supreme Chief, proposed by Mr.W.R.Russell, of St.Anne de Beaupre Court, and res- nded to by Mr.V.Morin, Vice-Supreme Enief, who spoke in both languages.The Press was also duly honored, Mr.P.Corriveau, proposing the toast, whizh was responded to by Dr.S-ewart and Messrs.G.Gale and Girard.The Ladies were not forgotten, and Capt.J.O.Martineau, in a neat speech, Jroposed their health, which was responded to by Alderman Boulanger.The last toast of the evening was that of the President, Alderman Lavery, which was proposed by Mr.Drapeau aud duly acknowledged.The banquet, which will mark an event in the annals of the Order vf Independent Foresters, was brought to a close at midnight.AROUND THE COURTS.Not Much of Public Interest in Yeaterday's Proceedings.In the Enquete and Merits Court yes- terdsy, Judge Andrews presiding, the case ptiy | of Madame Chas.Vezina, nce Eugeuie Hamel, against the executors of the estate of the late Abraham Haioel, was proceeded with and a number of witnesses examined.The plaintiff claims alimony from the ex- ecuturs, basing her claim on her farher's will The defendants plead that the ex- s of the estate excerd the receipts, and that they find it impossible to pay the allowance.case will be continued this morning.Mr.L.A.Dionue represents the plaintiff, and Messrs.Malouin, Bedard & Dechene the estate.Judge Andrews also took under advisement the case of Rousseau againat the Corporation of St.Nicholas, and the latter plaintiffs in warranty against Frechette.The plaintiff sues for $250, for injuries caused to his horse owing to bad roads.The defendants took an action in warranty against Frechette who ps be owner of the property opposite which the horse was injured.Messrs.Drouin & Pelletier for plaintiff ;
