Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

experience at his store on Palais street. He was seated in his private office with a friend wh?n he heard some one enter the store, and went out to ascertain what was wanted.Ie was con- {fronted hy a young lady who priced a number of jugs, etc., the prices of which she pretended were too high. After moving about for some time Mr.Norris, who had noticed three fancy invalide or sick cups standing beside each other on the shelf, was surprised to find that two of had disappeared. He did not pretend to know anything about it, however, but answered his customer's enquiries.Turning his head Mr.Norris was surprised to see another lady standing near by, not having heard a second party enter. She turned out to be a friend of the lady whom he was waiting upon.Finding that out he asked her if she found the price too high, etc., not being sure which of them had stolen the goods.‘The women finally turned to go, and Mr.Norris, who walked ahead of them, turned the key in the door.He then turned to the women and asked whichever one had taken the goods to kindly produce them. The woten denied very emn- phatically having taken anything, and threatened to have him up for defamation of character.Eeeing their attitude he threatened to telephone for the police and walked oVer to do r0.One of the women then called him back, and handed him the goods, offering at the same time to pay for them. This Mr.Norris aid was unnecessary, and turning towards his office, called his friend, Mr.Griffith, and showed him the goods, telling him that the women had stolen them.Mr.Grifith wantpd him to telephone for the police and lave them arrested, but he sajd that it would take up too much time ‘going to court, etc.” The ladies werp both well known, and ong of them is a married woman.7 to the prejudice of iha rights of either of the treaty Powers. He may act under joint instruction uf the three Powers, but shall receive no separate instruction from either.” fo flercely was the war of words conducted that Mr.Chambers, the American Chief Justice, eventually de cided to withdraw, and a few hours later formally advised the Consuls that he had decided to abstain, during the existing crisis, from any further deliberations of the board.Under these circumstances a deadlock became inevitable. The Municipal President found an active ally in his Consular compatriot, and the only course left open to the Englishspeaking Consuls was to offer and accept a truce, during which might refer the matter to their spective Governments. The latter had already added very materially to the perplexities of the situation. Not jong before the death of Malietoa Laupepa, the three Powers had agreed to amnesty Ma~ taafa and other chiefs, who in 1898 took part in a rebellion against the Samoan Government, and were exiled to the Marshall Islands.Mateafa, though banished, had not been forgotten by the Ramoans, and his re turn at the very height of the crisis could not fail to excite the hopes of his supporters and cause much surprise and speculation among all parties. The Samoans have had ample opportunity in the past of judging Gern opinion in relation to Mataafa, and have been shrewd enough to divine the authorship of these stipulations.‘Their treatment of the ques tion has been eminentiy characteristic and typical of native virtues and fauils.Another people, similarly embarrassed, might have resented Mataafa's resignation as a desertion of the national cause, and have forthwith recalled ‘their former loyalty ; while a second might have straightway elected Mataafa to the kingship and so precipitated a conflict.Ne:ther of these courses would have accord with Samoan traditions.‘The islanders are remarkable for their love of native soil, and gonsequently were prompt to sympathise with home-sickness, begotten of five weary years of exile, which had induced their idol to so readily subscribe to the Powers’ demands. Moreover, they never do in a hurry anything that can be accomplished with leisure. From hereditary high chief to beach loafer, all are rabid politicians, addicted to exuberant oratory, and never more happy than when discussing their own affairs and those of the ‘‘papalagis’’ (foreigners). It was, therefore, quite consistent with both Samoan polity and temperament that many weeks elapsed before any action waa taken by the natives in respect to the regal vacancy.Although, in Samoa, the office of king is nejthar very ornnjpental nor dignified, there has been no lack of candidates for has long been apparent that its influence was declining, and would be rudely challenged at the first suitable opportunity.* The hereditary high chief of the Tumua faction is Tamasese, who ghas for many years lived in Atua, the eastern district of the island of Upolu, in a state of nore or less open rebellion against the Government of Mulinulu. To the same family be longs Mataafa, now, as in days of yore, the most prominent figure in Samoan politics, and the hope of every islander who cherishes the idea of Bamoan independence. That this chief would eventually be elected: king has been anticipated by everyone acquainted with Samoa and its people. To them, therefore, the news recently cabled from Australia has not come as a surprise.Early in November there were great gatherings of the natives ‘ at Apié and, Mulinulu.| The Tumna ‘ party were the first to arrive, in auch numbers that the Government quarters proved insufficient for their’ ac-) commodation. They advised the nà- tive Government that they were resolute in their determination to elect Mataafa, a policy quite at variance with the views of Tamasese, who, finding his own people desprters Iron his cause, at once set apout the gre ation of a new party.Hitherto the Faipute, or Samoan Parliament, has included about eighty members, à number oft, complained of as toa great, = the recent election, however, the Tumna clan awsembled no fewer than 700 male adults, all claiming a representative status, and Apia opinion, probubly not without reason, credited them with the deep design of crowding out opposing factions. As the gathering increased, disturbances between the various parties became of frequent occurrence ; and it was no doubt with a view of impressing upon the natives that force would be used if required to repress serious breaches of the peace, that marines from H.M.8.Ringdove and Porpoise, and the German war-vesfela Buzzard and Falke, united in the recent demonstration at Mulinulu, ‘ Some surprise has heen occasioned by the absence {ruin the manoeuvre of any ship flying the American fag.Such absence, however, can be explained by the fact that up to that date the United States remained une represented in Semoan waters.Early in the autumn orders were issued from the Navy Department that at least ¢wo vessels should be commis sioned for Samoa ; but owing to apprehensions of trouble in the Philippines, these instructions were not im moiliately acted upon.Announced.BUTTERICK'S PATTERNS AND PUBLICATIONS.hand.Now is Be time to subscribe to th ‘ative and thoronrbly up ro
