LIVELY DIS CUSSION — MR.OGILVIE'S STATEMENT READ.Special to the Chronicle.Ottawa, Ont., May 29—This private psmnber's day.Hon.Mr.Sifton said Mr.Ogñvie's report giving the result of the Yukon enquiry hd.bess received. He promised to present it to-morrow.Sir Lcuis Düvlés tt" ask" Dy" Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper to bring down the ‘large number of letters’ which he said he had received in opposition to the tidal survey. The Minister reported that the letters were private and confidential.Hon.Mr.Blair, replying to Hon.Mr.Foster, said the Government of Canada had made a promise to bey the Canade [Eastern Extemsion Rsilway, but that he had himself public ly acd privately stated that he thought it would be in the public in- tevest to purchase the road.and that he wouli take it up and bring it before his colleagues.; A lively discussion took place over the pruspectus issued by the Bri- tish-Canadian Gold Field of Klondike Company, which prospectus sets forth that the survey of Mr.Ogilvie, when ia the Goverpment employ, gave ex- flunive information to that Company, gold might be found and advising tint claims be staked op thet ad spom us pessible.I» reply to questions as to Mr.Qgilvie’s conduct, Hon.Mr.Sifton Piacai on the table Mr.Ogilvie's long explanation, but madé none of this explanation Ogilvie admitted he had many conferences with the promotes of this Company, advised them not cnly as tg loeations, but as to business arrangements and mining processes, giving much information which was exclusive, but which he said he would have given to others as freely as to these men.How.Mr.Sifton, on further explan- ative, said he had informed the Com pany since that they could have no more exclusive information.Mr.Prior called attention to the prejudiced | press despatches from Washington regarding Canada’s position on the Alaskan boundary. He thought the Premier should make an explicit statement on the subject.Hic Wilfrid Laurier said that several despatches which had been pubs Mahod recently showed the attempt Hon the part of somebody Lo create the impression that Canade was making propositions that are unfair and unreasonable. It bad been suggested that the authorities in Washington must in some degree.Le responsible for such statgments, but he was quite sure such was nat cape. The Washington authorities could nbt have have sapefioned such stnte- ments, because the real ments of ~al- fairs was perfectly well kporp ‘to them. The whole matter was pow ip fact in exactly the same shape as it was when the Commission adjourned last February. So far ap the Canedian Governinent was concærned chere had been no change and there would be no change. He was not pow in a pesition to state the Canadian, op tention, but he boped, though ‘ would not promise, that papers relating to the vexotiations would he brought down before the end of the present session.Sir Wilfrid referred Yriely to the diflerence of view as to what the word ‘‘coast’” means in the treaty of 1825 and then added that the Canadian Commissioners, whan ‘it became evident that no eompromise could be reached.had offered to arbl- trate exactly upon the lines established by precedent and had not pro- any antecedent conditions., Sir Charles Tupper pointed out =a question which might possibly arise if the matter were indefinitely post- pened. In the Venezuelan arbitration Great Britain had agreed to withdraw from any territory which it could not he shown she had not held for the last fifty years. In the dis puted Alaskan territory American settlements had existed for soms time, and a contention similar the matter was left to far la the future. The subject then dropped.establishment way commission.Mr.Blair and Sir Charles Tupper.Finslly the resolution was dropped.Hon.Mr.Blair gives notice of a THE BRITISH-CANADIAN GOLD | marking places on the map where |?MDE.DREYFUS’ COUNSEL.Paris, May 29.— The publis lear ing of a demand for a revision of the Preyfus trial has commenced. The entire afternoon was occupied by M.Ballot de Beaupre in reading extracts from and analyzing the statements of M.Mornard.counsel for Madame Dreyfus, which was a lengthy recital of facts already fully published. After reading M.Mornard's defence, which concluded by maintaining that the material evidence of the bordereau and the moral evidence cropping out during the inquiry pointed not to Dreyfus, but to Esterhazy as the .culprit.W.Ballot de Beaupre dealt with the question of motive. He read the police report formulated hy M.Guenee, the detective, all usfavorsble to Dreyfus.and the report bf" ‘the Prefecture of Police, pointing out that theré had been a confusion of Dreyfus, with others of the same name, who had been mixed up with gambling and disreputable female associations. The latter reports were not produced at the trial in 1894, M.Ballot de Beaupre then pointed out that Dreyfus could not have acted as a traitor for anger or disappointivent, as he had the finest prospects of an excellent military ¢a- rcer.On the other hand, Eaterbazy, the reporter alleged, was-a soldier of regard to Esterbazy, by, the ‘las acquital of the charge of being writer of the bordereau, it ‘is the Jess the duty’ of the Su or through diplomatie channels.Gen.Talbot said that Marquis de Gallifot had misinterpreted his (Talbot's) words, as he never bad personal relations with Esterhazy in the way of espionage, but had simply heard that Esterhazy’s character was well known to
