never to lose touch with the enemy, and secondly, to the able way in which Delisle handled the firing line after L» Gallais and Ross were wounded.“Smith Dorien reports that the fight ing of Nov.6 and 7th was very hard. His force consisted of 250 mounted troops from the Fifth Lancers, the Moyal Canadian Dragoons and Mounted Rifles, two Roval Canadian Artillery guns, four guns of the eighty- grain.Of course this Tools business is the merest beginning of the new commerce of (his city.Next year will be brought about tbe real inauguration. But the start is now made and, ruch as it is, it is most significant and most horeful for us.THE RESULT IX ONTARIO.Mr.Ensst Pacaud writes to the Chronick as follows under date cf November 10 :—"F read vour article of this morning on ‘The Result in Ontario.I tink vou have misunderstood the remarks of Le Soleil on that subject.1 have translated wertatim my remarks, and would be very much obliged to vou if vou would Le kind enough to nut them before vour public. The following is the translation : ‘All our calculations came to Ue point, excepting, however, Ontario. The firey appeals of the Mail, World «nd Hamilton Spectator during the last days produced their effect. The cries of * No Poperv,”* "No French- Canadians,” *'No Catholics,” have prevented thousands of electors: from doing tleir duty, who were, nevertheless, enthusiastic admirers of Mr.Laurier and of his Government.Let us have no ill-feeling over it.On the contrary, let us continue to prove by our tolerance, hy our loyalty, by the broadness of our views, that thev are greatly in the wrong when they entertain such prejudices against fellow.citizens, who, in return, want only their good.” The above btler.we submit.fly teats out what the Chronicle has s-éd touching the remarks of Le Soleil on the ult of the ebctions in Ontario. In telling its naders that cries of ‘No Popery,” ‘No French.Canadians”* and ~No Catholics’ carried Ontario our contemporary is grievously misleading.thein and sowing lhe seed of distrust in the future. There is o large Catholic vote in Ontario ; sufficient if consolidated ta turn the scale in favour of either party. In the late election it went overwhelmingly with the Conservatives, who made cnormous gains in consequence in that Province. No political party in Canada can dare to raise such a Cry as Le Soleil tries to pul into the mouths of the Ontario people, for it would not be tolerated by the intelligent Protestants and would be nothing short of political sul Jeide. The Government was beaten in Oulario, but fully made up for its less:s chuwhere, It can nflord to be gencr- ous to the people of that Province and refrain fmputing charges to tlem which are il}-foundedeee cer From the Evening Chronicle, RETIBENENT OF SIR CHARLES.The retirement of Sir Cuarles Tupper from public life has Leen precipl- tated, though not much hastened in point of time, by the result of the late election.Sir Charles is full of years, having passed the allolted span of life by nearly a decade. He is still in the enjoyment of a vigor and strength of intellect and will that are the envy of younger men.But political life, and particulariy (be manage ment of à great party, which has many hatd battles soon to fight, is far too trying and too exhausting for the Connervatives and the people of Canada %0 expect a man of Rie Charles Tupper's years to continue to devote himself to it.We believe it was only AL be ural solicitation of his .HR CHRONICLE, QUEBEC, CANADA, hat Sir Charles consented to relain the leadership during the late campaign during which he took every opportunity to plainly indicate who would be his successor hud the Consécyatives "been returned to power.Sir Charles Tupper during his long political career, which, we believe, sut- now followed the disaster of 1896.He has lived to see every great project undertaken by the Conservatives vindicated by the country, end even by the moo who opposed it.He had withdrawn from political life whem, in 1896, at the call of his former associates.he abandoned the comparative ease and comfort of an official position which be was emjnently fitted to ce cupy, in order to take command of a party that was split into contending factions.Through his efforts the Conservatives have been reunited, diferen- ces have been sulordinated, and the parte has presented an unbroken front to the enemy. The oply appearance of discord in the ate campaign was the personal opposition offered by Sir Mackenzie Bowell to Mt J.G.Hag Kart in Ontario.but both gentlemen cordially and fully aboeptod the leadership of Sir Charles Tupper and worg: ed for his success.Sir Charles Tupper, like all politicians, had his foes az well as his friends.‘ If the latter were warmly devoted to him personally, he had to which his many years of success had engendered among his enemies.Never was a man in Canadian politics so thoroughly, and, for a time, so successfully: misrepresented and maligned as Sir Charles Tupper. The personal campaign was carried on so, petsistent- Iv that even Conservatives who did not know their leader personally Imad begun to suspect that it must be well founded. This was particularly noticeable in the election of 1896.but had, we believe, been completely overcome in the late struggle.Sic Charles Tupper had his defects, like most men, but he was an honorable, patriotic and conscientious salesman.Slander rais- od its tongue against him, but it never fastened for a moment one dishouor- able, discreditable or cowardly charge upon him, With the withdrawal of Sir Charles Tupper we close a chapter of the history of this country. He is the last of the leading statesmen whose £aith in Canada and in the Canadian people made Confederation possible, gave us the National Policy, and made the achisvement of our railWay and canal systems a success.New schools of politicians, which are both inspired by tie same confident spirit that Sir John Macdonald, Sir George Cartier and Sir Charles Tupper infused into Canada, are coming, and have come to the front.Canada today, whichever party may happen to be in power, is a strong, prosperous and progressive nation, because of the faith which its builders had in its future.Canadians can, theretcre, regardisss of party affiliations, pay a sincere tribute to the man who has now laid aside the duties and ibe tasks of public life.He has won many a battle for the Conservatives, and has been with them in their reverses, too, but he has never lost à battle he undertook for bia countey and fur his Queen.Sir Charles steps aside, but in the main his polieg goes on, and he leaves those in the Consecvative party who will yet be called upon to carry out to its full fruition.ee ——— WILL IT BECOME POPULAR?How Do You Like This New Fad ?Vegetarians, anti-cofe drinkers and food cranks of every description, must now take a
