Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

the reason that the result is a foregone conclusion.Already the Government is assured of a majority in the Legislature, so that the issuo today is not whether the administration should be sustained, butt whether Federal Parliament.Followiag quickly upon this remarkable success the Legislature was dissolved two years before its time, on the shortest possible notice at the most inclement sa- son of the year. The Conservatives have heen assailed by Liberal critics on the ground that they should have offered a stronger and better organized opposition. It is said that they will not fight because they see no immediate chance of acquiring office. After all when a political party enters a contest it goes in to win if possible and even the bravest of armies would fail to do ifs best if it knew that it was predestined to defeat.Still there are enough Conservative candidates in the field to-day to give the province an efficient opposition in the Legislature, Tiey have confined their efforts tn the constituencies in which it is considered they have a fighting chance.Everything, however, points to the fact that the opposition will Lave a very hard and uphill fight 10 make even a de cent showing in the Legislature——————— THE FAST ATLANTIC.A London cable states that : ‘IC is understood that the Dominion Ministry have given renewed assurances to their friends of itheir firm intention to push the fast Atlantic proiect to completion at tle exrliest possible moment.M one high authority declared, they re alize its fulfilment is essentiel to Canadian expansion.” It is ta te hoped that this announcement will prove by sutsequent events to 1» well founded. The Government certainly owes it to the country that it should make a vigorous efiort to secure the fast Atlan tic servie, Its pledess of 1896 were renewed in the lade campaizn and were accepted as genuine by the majority of the peonle.Canada is prepared to pay for the service, because jt tolisves that it is essentéal to our welfare. The Government will.therefore, be sustained and encouraged by the people in determined effort to accomplish the project.TUREEY'S WAY OF PAYIXG.The Sultan of Turkey is an amusing chap, who does not like do pay his debts.1Ks method of settling the claim of tt»> United States for Americans killed in the Armenian massacres fully surtaing his roputation in both those respects. The Republic has for several years been dunnine Turkey for $115,600.hv wav of compensation. The Sultan has buffed off the collector sys temcdicaliv unt, quite out of patience with him, the United States sent one of ils test baltlesiAps tn secure a sel- Mement of tie account.Under tix guns of tle Kentucky a curious ad- ustment has been effecied.| Turkev has given a contract te a Philadelphia shipbuilder to build a cruiser af » cost of $1,750,000, the contracdor to pav tle indemnity out of that sum.Practically the Sultan hands the money to a contractor, who tr.nsfers it to dhe American Government, and thus wipes oul the score.Ths is a (air syecinem of Oriented diplomacy.Turkey des not want to be in the position of pas- ing compensation for the massacre of Christians, so it pays about fifteen times the sum asked for as ti» price of a ship, and this indirectly satisfies the claim. This method of settlement is eminently satisfactory to the American shipbuilders, as 4 brings trade to them.It also pleas>s the Sultanfor he wi'l borrow the funds to buy the cruiser and sone dav hin creditors will whistle for their monev. From the Evening Chronicle.Britannia rules (he waves, profound indignation this moro- ing the statement that 'B'* Battery js to te removed to kingston. This means to our city the loss of money and above all the loss of interest and prestige.uebec holds a drafted into "A" Battery at Kingston, the citizens were informed that it was only à temporary measure. We were assured that on the return of the contingent from South Africa the Battery would be reformed bere. Now it looks as though the rights of Quebec were going to Le passed over entirely.‘there are certain considerations which ake this exceedingly vexatious.Ju the first place, the othcers and men of tle RC, A.who went to South Africa huve behaved in such a way as to make us proud of then. They have been on the move all the time and under fire on numberlezs occasions, In fact the guns (hat they took with them have, we are told, been ‘’weli peppered with bullets” and doubtless bear marks of them.It is aggravating to think that we shall no longer have in our midst a carps that has served the Empire with such gallan- ry.In the second place, it is ime portant that we should have amongsl us a permanent force of mountsd men.The war has demousirated the urgent need there is for an itvreasz of mounted troobs.lavine the Battery in Quebec keeps up the standard of riding and the interest of the public in what is perhaps one of the most important branches of the service.lu the third place, the citizens of Quebee have subscribed most liberally to the various funds in connection with the departure and reception of both contingents, aud their wishes ought cestainly to be regarded now.In fact, it will be à gross injustice Lo this historic city if the Battery is taken from us, an injustices = that cannot be made up for by the increase in the number Jf infantry. No doubt Kingston is working hard at this time in its own interest, but why should Lec te robbed of one of ler inherited rights for the benefit of a smaller town in another Province ?Let the citizens unite and present a sirong appeal to Sir Wilrrid Jaurier Leflore it is too late, that the meu who have won such distinction in South Aféca, who have been long residents “amongst, us, and for whom our cittzens have gladly and willingly done so much, be suffered to remain with us aw a permanent and iried examples of, and as a school of instruction in, the training and qualities of
