Mayor Defeat to- would have of the Greater New York, over Seth Low, Fusionist, tbe present Mayor, by the large plurality of about 70,000.Edward i Grout was elected comptroller and Chas.V.Fornes President of the Board of Aldermen.‘These two men were originally on the Fuwion ticket and were A by Tammany, vhereupon the Fusionists took their names from the Low ballots and nominated other candidates.It was the nomination of Grout and Fornes Tammany that cout Hugh Mcleughlin the veteran of the King's County Democracy, to bolt and declare that he would not support men who were not Democrats In spite of his defection, however, Mc- Clellan, Grout and Formes carried King’s County.The management ol their campaign there was taken over by State Senator Patrick H.McCar- ven whea McLaughlin refused his aid.A erprise was the little voting for Wm.B.Devery, former Chief of Police, who tan on an independent ticket, which was given prectically no rup- port.The result showx a trem us of public sentiment since Low's election two years ago, when he won by 31.692.At that time he carried all the boroughs hut Queens.Tin plurality in Manhatian and the Bronx was 56663, Brooklyn, 25,767.and in Richmond 783.In Queens, Sheppard, Democrat, had a plurality of 501.Today McClellan carried Manhattan and the Bronx hy sliqut 58,000, a gain of 63,000.Brooklyn by about 6000, à gain of 33,000 and Queens bv about £000, à gain of more than four thousand.Thier makes à total net gain for Meo Clellan of about 103,000 ax compared with Sheppatd’'s vote of two yearn Low carried only.tne Gorough—Rich mônd—bv abotit two hundred votes.The result wag known early, and at 8.15 Mayor Low sent a telegram of congretulation to Col.McClellan.Col.McClellan.whe ix at pregeat a member of Congrear, made ths following wtatement : “I am deeply grateful to my fellow citizens for their con- re in me.T renew the promimes which T made before election.T have no bitterness of all Detiocrate for the Prosidential contest of 1904." Chas.F.Nurphy, the loader of Tonrmany Hall, said : “The figures speak for themselver and tho people have upoken.Of course we are pleased at the result.It bears out | the figures we gave.If the election had na further off, the chances are that Devery would have polled a larger vote than Low.” At 8.153 Mayor Low entered hix office and to the newspaper men said that was about to send the following telegram to Col.MoClellan: “I con gratulate you on your election.1 1 can be of service to you, pray command me.(Signed) Seth low.” The Mayor then said) “I think that the campaign.meant for him deposition from his post as leader of Tammany with all accension to control of another faction Indeed, plans had been made by certain i t Democrats based on the belief that Low would be re-slect- ed to re-organize the Democracy of the city with Tammany left out.To Mr.McCarren, also, the result, meant much, for had NeCiellan lout McLaugh lim would bave been, again in control and Me€arren and his friends would have had little to hope for, The carrying of Brooklyn for McClel lan caused astonishment, as it was believed! the cry of “no red lights in Brooklyn” woukl cause an increased vote for Low over there.The campaign was one of the moet interesting in the history of New York City.From the day Mayor Low was re-nominated his supporters urged hin re-election on the ground that no partisan question was involved, but that every men should vote to uphok?the existing administration because it had given the citv a business-like ron- duct of affairs, and because it had done much to stamp out the ‘red light” evil of the Fast Side.Jt was argued by Fusionist orators that the return of Tammany men to power would mean, a “wide open town,” un- reitricted lawleammess and the renewnd terrors of the infamous “cadet system” by which ignorant girls were forced into of the credit for the good husiness administration under Low belonged to Grout, who war on the Democratic ticket, and that every Democrat should cast his hellot for McClellan in view of the important bearing this city's vote would have on the Presidential elec: tion next vear.Of the five horough presidents voted for, the Democratic candidates were successful in the Bronx, where Hefen wax reelected; in Manhnttan, where Ahearm had a hig plurality; in Queens, where Caasidv won for the second time and in Brooklyn, where Martin W.Littleton had a larger plurality than McClellan.Littleton that Lord Alverstone, a Britich jurist of high reputation, and of unsullied fame, bad vonsonted to act the part assigned to him, and that the British nation was aware of the fact and prepared to condene it, rather than risk a war in the interests of justice and equity.The impatation is the most outrageous insult that coukl be offered to a grret nation in the person of ite Government, aml one of its most respected judges, and can only he excused on the supposition that the ahieged con- duet ix so common among the complainants themselves, that they can understand and believe in its pomsibi lity elsewhere.The New York Tribune «ays that it is impossible that those who ake these charges should = at tach any credence to them, and ve wo inclinl to agree with our con tenporary, but, in that case, the ‘re sentaient” ix n fictitions one, and the ery is the outcome of dimloyalty and of treasonahle machinations.Every tree in judgel by its fruits; and the outisurst against the Alaskan award bas been utilized by Sir Wilfrid Laurier to ‘make Canada a nation,” and to advocate a demand for independence, This gentleman, who in 1898 stated in the House of Com: mone that the disputed territory, though claimed hy Canada, had been in the possession of the Kussians from “time immemorial,” down to its trans ference to the United States, which had held it ever afterwards, and who refused the supgeation of Lord Lane downe to make the abrogation of the Bulwer Clayton treaty, the means of obtainingy satisfacgory concessions à | from the mire in now indignant wepuse Canada hae heen given a portion of the mainland amd two of the }|ivlands, declares that Canadian inter: «tx are always macrificed by British authorities, and wants the treaty- making power of an independent State It ix trne that an effort is made by Ministere and a few of their supporters to reconcile thin demand with loyalty w British connection, but The Globe, rhe Witnees, and other Cirit papers ire mine owepoken and more honest, wl recognize that it in independence that in asked for aml independence chat must he given.H Canada makes Cares à Cold in One Day, [Ep THR CHRONTCLP, Q UC her‘’own'treatios, she must caforce them, if, weed Les, by hersell, or break them €” Aer ous peril : if Great Brithem, che has no longer the rosponsi- bility of them; Canadian treaties are thenceforth no more to her than Fronch, German or Russian treaties, and if it were true that she has hitherto aacrifioed Canadian interests to truckle to the United States, then, under the now condition of things, she would be found on the side of the latter in any dispute that ight arise between Canada and the States.No doubt the school of Messrs.Laurier and Bourassa, and of their English speaking dupes, would be well content to reuain nominally a Britich colony and to gather in all the hall-pence while the Mother Country received all the kicks, but there are two parties to a bargain.When a son vets up in business for himself, emters into contracts on his own motion, the futher has no more to do with him, and the people of Great Britain who ure now taxed for the consular and diplomatio service and the marine protection of a colony that is sll-govern- ing and independent in al! save the treaty making power would be foolish to contime all this when this last State attribute is given.If we want (independence, there Is no doubt we vhall got all the independence we want and nore too; how long we shall keep it will be a matter of agreement he- tween the present Govormment at Otta wa, if it is continued there, and the fiovernment at Washington.By all means Jet us do away with British flags and British patriotic songs at our banquets, but let us be vonsistently inconsistent, mingle a little decency with our indecency, and a little honor with our dishonor.If we de not want British flags, we have no use for British capital;
