Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

with great pleasure that we recognize the patriotic wpirit of our ritizars generally, and our leadmg commercial institutions, a fresh evidence of which appears in our columns today in the shape of the munificent subsoription of 3250 to the Soldiers’ Monument Fund bv the Union Bank.Since we last moticed the subject we are glad to say that we have received several contributions from private individuals, which leave no doubt in our minds of the geveral favorable interest which is taken by the public in the memorial, and of the fact thet it bas only been waiting to be asked to make a gonerous response. We hope that this will continue because there is a considerable sum yet remaining lo be made up, and the time when the monument should be unveiled end paws inlo the possession of the citizens in fast approaching, while, as we bave had oocesion to point out, it is impossible for the committee to wait on each individual, and unless these take the initiative by promptly for warding their subscriptions to the Chronicle thev may efterwards reoret the loss of the opportunity of associating their names with this historic enterprise, TUBERCULOSIS SANATORIA.Chambers’ Journal in article on deserts in general, end the great American Desert in particular, entitled “Death in the Desert,” it eaunotates what at first sight ep pears to be a paradox that, notwithstanding the sinister reputetion of tbe desert, and the bicaching bones of l prospectors end explorers with which Jit is atrewed, the desert emmuaily saves more lives them it destrovs.l'This has been effected by the advance of modern civilization which has e- ' tablished vases by the means of the “sinking of deep wells and the instal: à lation of powerful pumping plants, as well as irrigation works, home of the ‘range’ or ranch horse, which includes ponies, zaddiers, drivers and heavy draughts. All these are improving stock combining in their constitution the wonderful endurance lung power and strength of buck and loins of the native animal with the finer qualities of the more civilized.Owing to the preat influx of immi- gretéon, the demand for horees in Canada is far in excess of the supply. The importetions from the United States are consequently very large, and make this country at present à difficult marlet for securing remounte for the British army.lt is estimated that fully forty thousand horses will be imported.this year, During the Boer war 14,611 horses were drawn out of Canpda by the remount commission. Its would be difficult to obtain the seme numbers on en emergency at the present time.It is estimated, however, that the supply of suitable horses for army purposes would reach two thousand a vear, the chief number coming from eastern Camada. This number would be increased with the development of the western territories. At present an agricultural tvpe of horse is most in demand in the west, and horses suitable ior the riding branches of the army are not remdily obteinable. But the increasing use of saddle horses wil tend to modify this condition and the establishment of a remot mation would probably go far to develop its own supply. The contiguity of the United States to Canada engances the | vadue of this country as a base for remount operations in case of pressing ned.Furthermore, in the event of war, whether in Asim, Furope or Africa, tha Domemion is not inconveniently placed.Every facility for shipment cest and west exists and trans.(oontinental (ransportation #s easily effected. These facts will give an idea of the causes why the
