Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

each party must have Bn recognized leader and a severe dis- eipline must exist among the adepts of both parties.“We perfectly understand ali that ; and we also understand that it would be diflicult for a country with a constitutional ‘government to govern without the application of these general principles.“But what we do not understand is why this party discipline is carried to such an extent, and that an attempt is made to compare it to military discipline which forces the soldier to obey without having the right to ask himself if bis superior officer is right or wrong, if he possesses his intelligence or not, and if the orders given will result in a deleat or a victory.“Men evidently intelligent and of independent fortune and favors, consent to trample upon their intelligence and their heart, their free will and their faculty of thinking, their independence and their pride, even their dutits of conscience and the interests of their race or country to satisfy that tyrannical discipline.‘One should hear conscientious mem.thoie conscience did not allow them to sane.tion the principle of a bill and a few minutes later, vote and even speak in favor of thay same principle.“It is to see the electorate attach themselves to a man and remain feith- ful to him even when the betrays the aspirations of a whole nation.“It is moreover to sce the stupidity of party organs who to-day deny what they affirmed yesterday and who will_emplay all the resources of philo- and human science to prove that what is black to-day will be white to-morrow.“If the Almighty has given us a free will intelligence, the power to think and judge, it is that we should use them in politics as in all other cases.“That principle may even assodiate itsell with our way of understanding constitutional parties and of we divert therefrom we assint at deplorable and disastrous events.“In 1896, if it had not been for that party spirit, the Catholies of Manitoba would have received the entire consecration of their educational rights.And again this year if that same party spirit had not ohscured the intelligence of our representatives our coreligionists of the West would have been treated with entire justice.“It may be remarked that on both (here occasions it was precisely those whose interest it was to render justice, who became the artisans of injustice and spoilation.This is where that extreme partizanship has led us to.‘From the general to the private member, let us see what that slavery - has cost us, Quebecers.“For a long time past the electors | of the old city of Champlain have been liberals of the most ” extrema rouge type and have only been sending to Ottawa representatives of their by political color.“Since 1506 we had as our representative the Federal Premier and from 1599 to 1905 we have had the Premier That is ja we Were of talking to himself the masters, or at least should have hia sleep, of the Province of Quebecto say that during five years been, masters of both governments.This favor, if it is one, we may never have again.“Have we benefited thereby, have we bad any advantage therefrom ?“From the Provincial Government, we have received perhaps the permission given to our City Council to horrow a few hundred thousand dollars for necessary the construction of a bridge outeido the city limits.“From the Federal Government saine the Quebec Hartor Commissioners, and a few thousand dollars voted for the construction of a wharl.for something else important, “This is ah we got for the of possessing two | song our represontatives, “Even in St.Roch's, where we have the all powerful man as represcata- the tive, we have nothing, nothing, noth-’ Grout was headed “Straining at a set hat is the cause of that ?the Chairman of the Harbor missioners are Liberals ;
