Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

received from the Rev, W, F.Armétage, M.A, Rector of Bt, Paul's Ghureh, Halifax, the first of a short series of letters on the subjest of Church Union in Canada, which the demands on our limited space do not permit us to publish; the concluding sentence, however, of this first letter, will, we thfak, give our readers a clear idea of the ventiments which have actuated the writer, and the end which he wishes to attain, He says: — “In view of the tremendous respon: uilility that faces the church of the living God im Canada in thie nineteenth century, tin view of the teeming millions who are to be won {or Christ or forever lost, according to the measurs of the church's faithful ness, there seems to be no question that a strong united Canadian church, filled with the Holy Ghost, and on fire with miesdonary seal, is the great need to prevent overlapping and wasted effort and to ssve this gread Domwinion for Christ aM the church.” Efforts to obtain à reunion of the different Christian Churches are frequent, and wide-spread; and meet with more or less partial success. There is a very strong movement in this diree- tion going on at the present moment in Great Britain which sppesrs to be more comprebensive than others of a kindred nature elsewhere, and ie voiced in a circular addressed to all the ministers in the country advocating a reunion, and signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and York, the peesi- dents of the United Methodist Free Churches, the Wesleyan Methodist Conference, the Baptist Union, and the Methodist New Connection Church; the rman of the Congregational Union, and the Moderators of the English Presbyterian Church, the General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland, and the United.Free Church. The Roman Cathoke Arehbishop of Westasineser, Dr.Bourne, expressed hin sympathy, though he did not sign.It will be seen that this movement pro; ceeds from the; official heads of all the Protestant Churches in Grest Britain and has the sympathy of the highest Roman Catholic degnitary in that country, though his signature was not, for obvious ressons, attacked to the circular, We hail this and similar movements as a sign of the tardy awekening of the different djvisions of Christendom to the folly and wickedness of their mutual jealousies and rivalries, and the dangers to which Christianity ie exposed hy reason of them, and the waste of misdirected energy and power which they have caused, but we do not think that the movements for church reunion can have any practical result in that direction, nor do we think it would be desirable that they should.A vi ible official union, a quasi-spiritusl combine of the different Christian Churches can only be ebiected by the elimination of the die tinguishing marks which now separ ate them, whether it be questions of scclesiastical polity, of ecclesiastical ritual, or of doctrinal differences, and this would be a confession that the churches have been in mortai sin by a achismatical esparation for ne good and efficient reasons, and that ques tions which were non-essential hed been regarded as essential. We ven: ture to say that in each Christian body the truret and most earnest meg boleths as essential, and se their justification for holding aloof from other bodies, and to tell them otherwise now would utterly destroy that Christian faith which is already griev.ously weakened by the compromisers who would adjust it to what je call.vd the altered conditions of society.Men must always differ, and the more conscientious they are, the more likely are they to differ om points of polity and on points of interpretation, Nor is this at all contrary ta true religious interests. On the con trary it stirs up religious energy, end infuses strength into religious lls.The Master, when He prayed thet His Church might be one did not pray that it might be monotone, sad the unity that he prayed for was not that of intellect, but of the heart, not that of polities and dogma, but that of love. That was answered, lig and the Chureh of Christ is one Dow, em actual end visible unit wherover there are men who hold their faith in “the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace, ond in righteousness of He,” however, they may differ in ritual and in degma.Neither of these | tiiogs was prescribed by the Mastes | the red) do regard their distinguishing Shib- | terminal of ita new fast line ol steamers is attracting much attention, It in LÀ into inence élities of the porte of Canada, especially of Quebec, in trans-Adantia traffic. Not many years ago the port of Quebet, relati was more im portant than Montréal.With the improvement of the St.Lawrence nel and the growth of Montreal as a centre, the relative importance of Quatre declined.Yet among shrewd observers it is confidently believed that soower or lates Quebec will again rise in relative im.portancé as s and rhor .compared with Montreal. The construction of the Grand Trunk Pacifie Raliway, with Quebee about two hundred miles nearer the ocean than Montreal, but practicaHy no {farther distant by rail from Winnipeg, will make that port of increasing importance for ocean transportation.Adding to this the © ned advantages of nearness to the metropolis of the West and nearness to the markets of Europe as compared -with Montreal, also the modern tenden of ocean steamers to be of increased draught and ton » Quebec will have a distinot advaniage over Montreal for ocean business.Quebes already enjoys the advintege of possessing a deep harbor with comparatively o ide fluctuation and easy of approach from t while Fe St PP wrence channel te Montreal aflords considerable peril ta the larger class of ocean steamers, However, with the growth of the Northwest and the increring business originating bere enough s to t usy.In conmection with the CP B's decision to make Quebec the terteinal of its new line of steamers it is claimed the distance from Li to Que bec can easily be covered within six days by twenty-knot steamers.company do not consider it profitable for these large steamers to follow the tortuous channel of the St.Lawrence, with its risk and necessary time oc cupied.Upon a weekly steam service two days saved per trip by not going to Montreal and returning, would amount to $40,000 for each vessel, which, multiplied 0 three during the summer season, with its ten trips for each steamer, totals $120,000 a year.Add to this the insurance benefits and incidental charges for depreciation and interest and the fourth steamer not required, it is estimated a saving of close upon $365,000 per ssasen can be eflected in the new steamship service with Quebec and Liverpool as termi points.—Ottawa Citizen, ——— REFORMING THE SENATE.—These are House of Lords. And in Canada there is an agitation against the Dominion Senate that is of moment. Here are some examples of the propositions for the reform of the Cansdian Senste.Premier Laurier the other day spoke.with some favor of our plan of electing senators by local legislatures.Benator David would have one-third of the senators ap- inted br the Government, one-third ES local egislatures and one-third by universities and other public bodies, Sir Richard Cartwright, a member of the Anglo-American Joint High Commission, proposes to elect two-thirds of the senators.Inasmuch as the senators of Cenada are now appointed for life br the Gow ernor General, any of these proposed changes would be in the direction of getting the Canadian Senate closer to the poole, but none of them would go as far as a majority of the United States would probably go to-day, in the election of their own senators. The agitation on both sides of the border to get a closer hold, a tighter rein, upon
