Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

rent appearance, that the Government would have to take oygr the construction, and if it became a part ol the Grand Tmmnk Pacific system, it would mean discrimination against al) other interests.The gentleman spoken to on the mbject said : “The handing over of the bridge to the Grand Trunk Pacilc as a link bind ing system was serious enough to contemplate, but if the terminals were elso given .to the same corporation Ît would be stfil more serious.If the bridge eat under the control of the G.T.P.the Railway Commission can eqeilv prevent discrimination, but if the terminals are also ligked with the same interests it will be altogether another thing.The Grand Trunk Pacific could not block the traffic of other interests on the bridge, but they could easily find ae to dose Vn terminals it ey found it to ir mivantage te do 3, and the mood should evar weiss their will power.It is possible that no rach unfair course would ever be resorted to, but it is wise that such a possibili should be guarded against in time, therefore the Government should mpet the railway and steamship interssts in conference as soon as possible to talk the matter over, and have an important plan drafted that would permit of no obstacle to block the wheels of commerce by Any one individual interest.It is probable that the present Bridge Company will never complete the work they have commenced and with in such a satisfactory manner, and it is said thas either & new terminal company, composed of all the railway and steamship interests will be found, or the Government will take over the res- ‘ponsibility for the completion of the prospective work.The objection to the formation of a New company to carry out and com- plate the terminal scheme lise in the obligatign that might be imposed, Tf the company would be obliged to find the latest means to carry out the work, it would mean that no new RR would be formed.flovernment have already contributed to all public works eonstruct.ed in every part of Canada in the public intereat, and naturally the same is expected of them in the case of Quebec, However, the frst consideration ie 8 conference between the Government and all reilway and stenmship inter.esta to arrive at some understanding in respect to the plan of construction and al the same time safeguard al! interests against discrimination.The second conrideration would be A dissolution ‘of the present Board of Hnrbor Commissioners, and the appointment in their stead of à commission commosed af three or five experte, who wanld vepresent the rail way, steamship and all other com mercial intereate impartially.The Quebec Bridge Compane.into which is merged the old Terminal Company.can not possibly build up the river front from the nassenger station et the Champlain Market with the Wecessary cocks, ste., with the money, @ present, at their dizposal.Besides their obligations do not hind them eonsequently & much larger scheme than the present will have to ba adopted with all ite obligations that will require & much larger financial backing.The Government have guaranteed the OQuehee Bridge Crmrany honds ton 27.0000.and the Bauk of Montreal je advancing the comnany 20 sent of the money, or %3.004,000, holding back 20 per cent, no doubt to safe KOCH, LAUTEREN & CO.FRANKFORT BRSABLISHRD 1710 SHIPPERS OF STANDARE RAINE and MOSELLE WINES t= * \\ LAW, YOUNG.& CO., Nyatreal, a Chponicle representa- | bri TERMINALS | guard iation, snd chargi in | terest only’ on the amount advaniond.This sum of money, large as it ap per will not suffice te complete the uebeo - bridge and its branch railway from Victoria Cove to Champlais Magket, with terminal arrangements In fact, ids said, among those whd have figu on the matter, that the ; Bridge Company will have to receivt more aid from Xhe Dominjon Govera ment, In the meantime some plan foc th?future must be thought out and actes upon without andus delay.The ‘Grand Trunk Pacific will be completed from Winnipeg to Quebec in five years.and the port of Quebec must be gol ready fer the traffic it is destined tr ng.The whole river, frontage from the Pointe-a-Carcey wharf to SHlery Cove will have to be built up, and equip pd with proper docks, elevators, {lreight sheds and oold storage ware (houses that will have to be erected, together with the laying out of yards and spreading of amet work of tracks and sidings, which will absorb both time and money, and it will be seen that there is very little room for procrastination.It is therefore advisable that the Government should meet the railway and steamship men concerned with, as little delay as is possible to discuss the situation and como to a practical understanding in regard to it, which ir i to inaugurate a new era of prosperity jin the whole commerce of C , in which the port of Quebec is to figure as an important factor and the city of Quebec to share.—— PERSONAL GOSSIP.Miss A.Curry, G.E.Curry, Pittsburg, Pa.; working condition.His death at any timo would occasion little surprise.In thé event of his passing away it is probable that the liberal reform element would make a great effort to seize the reins of government and with some hope of success now that the Dow Empress bas grown so old that ee would tind it difficult to continue her | grasp on the throne.In wany respects the Dowager Empress is one of the most remarkable as she is one of the most monstrous figures of modern history.She wes the daughter of a Manchurian noble, and followed the fortunes of her family from Pekin to Osaiton, until, when she was about 7 years old, the condi- , tion of her father’s finances necessitated, or at least resulted in, her sale | as a slave into the family of a Canton merchant.Her beauty even at that time was pronounced, according to .Chinese standards, and her cleverness had already developed.hen she was about 17 years old the Emperor Hsien Fung, as is the Chiness custom, issued a proclamation calling upon the daughters of Manichuria to present themselves at Pekin for a choice to be made among them for the imperial harem.She travelled up to Pekin in the luxury befitting her rank, triumphantly pi the ordeal of inspection by the Em 's officers, and was promptly installed in the imperial palace among the Emperor's women.This was in 1549.Beautiful, accomplished and possessed of consummate tact and unusual knowledge, Tsu Tsi soon stepped out from among the ‘throng of the harem residents into a arate and distinctive place.Later, (when she presented the Emperor with a son and heir to the throne, she rose “te higher in favor.In 1860, while the boy was still young, his father died and v soon the emall boy was proclaimed Emperor under the title of Tung Chi, with the Dowager Empress and mother Empress appointed co-regents.For many i years, dominating her weak co- t, su Tsi was absolute ruler of China.Finally her son, Tung Chi, attained ‘his majority, was duly laimed Em.: peror, and the regency ended.Apparently Tsu Tele career was anded.Wise and silent, she drew back with her sister regent into hi vate imperial life.But Tung Lhi di and hia young wife passed away in child birth, and the Dowager Empress at once again came to the front, presenting to the Chinese people n new Emperor in the person of Kwang Shu, a baby son of a brother of the Emor of Haien Fung.Tt is this nep- ew of her dead husband who is now the sick Eniperor of China, and whose death, which may be but a matter of | weeks or days, will precipitate a political, social and industrial upheaval which the Flowery Ringdom never before has cxperienced in its centuries of history.MOBERLY IS CARED FOR.Prince Albert, Aug._13.—Corporal Jones, the Mounted Policeman, who was sent out after H.J.Moberly, has returned.He came back without H.{J., the census guard and ex-poll clerk.: When the corporal reached his destination, he found that somebody had {already preceded him and Moberly had *mnother job in the pay of the Dominfon Government.The hero of the Northern Poll outrage is already working for the Dominion in another capacity.He has been engaged in connection with the payment of scrip to the half-breeds and the treaty with the Indians in the north.Steps are heing taken to treat with the northern Indians, who have never accepted Government honnty, and the report is that Moberly has been taken care of, wo his feelings would not be hurt when his pay was increased.Mrs.Moberly.wife of the ex-poll clerk, returned with the mounted policeman.BE A STRONG MAN Increase your vitality.Restore your nerve energy and feel | as you ought, brisk hearty and over ready for work.You need Ferrosone, ~It is just the remedy for me.It eroates ja keen appetite, gives prodi- gioun digestion, pours richness and vitality into the blood.- It takes power to rebuild & worn {out man, but Ferrosone has that power and Mr.Walter Wood of Beau- oxpenses, ¢hirty-cight millions six hundred and ninsty-six thousand four hundred and forty-six dollars; The magistrate having examined the rules thought the cant had better get the names two new trustees and lay the facta before them, or apply at the court agsin.STRUCK BY LIGHTNING Neatly describes the celerity of Putnam’s Corn Extractor.Roots them out in short order.Causes no pain, leaves | no scar, and gives satisfaction.Remember there is only one “best” and that’s Putnam’s—fifty years in use.;
