Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

cnmmemoration of his visit to the Tercenten celebration. The tree was planted in close vicinity to the * onument erected to the late Queen Victoria. His Royal Highnees received an enthusiastic from the large crowds which lined the route wyonlong which be passed to the Parl “while in the P itaslf there was preat demonstration in his honor from the, anembled multitude. On d’Aiguillon street the orphans from the convent of the Sisters of Chatity lined hath sides of the thoroughfare, with the Sacred Heert flag at their bead, and they greeted the Prince with cries of “Vive Son AMesss St.Charles, the children the Prince with “God Save the King,” to whith H.R.H.listened with uncovered head.On arrival at the Park, a choir of young ladies, under the direc- ~ tion of Mr.J.Arthur Paquet, sang “O Canada 1” “Carillon” and “God Save tho King” in French. The Prince was received at the Park by His Worship the Mayor, Sir J.George Garneau, the members of the Cit; Council, Mr.H.J.J.B.Choui , City Clerk, and a large gatheri of leading citizens. His Boyal Highness was accompanied by His Excellency » the Governor-General, and there was also a guard of honor. After bis reception by Mayor Garneau the Prince to the planting of the tree, during which ceremony he used the magnificent ebony-handied 8 , which bears the arms of the city, ceremony, the Mayor calied for three cheers for the Prince, which were given with enthusiasm. There were a couple of incidents at the Park which aroused much interest.Between the guards stationed to keep back the _ growd ran a little six-year-old gl he Tight in front of the Prince.“ ghtened mother tried to reach the child, when the Prince gresiously re stored the little one to her.Two women close by the Prince tendered their hands to His Royal Highness, who cordially grasped them and spoke a few words in French to them. The return to the Citadel was made amid hos marked avery appearancs of the Prince in public.SPENCER WOOD GARDEN PARTY.The garden party given by His Honor the Lieut.-Governor yesterday after- poon in honor of the Prince of Walos and other distinguishod guests “al the nation proved one of the most charm- Ing functions of the official Vite of the Terrentenery.Âs nt the visit to Bt.Joachim on Monday an opportunity was afforded lis Royal Highness to meat the other guests sans ceremonie.and the Prince availed himself of it with apparent delight. He wae drees- ol in nary afternoon costume, with top hat, and pent sn hout walk- Es around the beautiful grounde of around with them, spending some time in & close conversation with Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, and later on having 8 walk with Lord Strathcona. The of Norfolk and the other members of the party at the Citadel, as well as the leading military and naval officials were also amongst the , as well as al number of leading citizens of Canada who have been gathered bers during the past week. The Prince drove to Spencer Wood in state, guarded by a squadron of the North-West Mounted Police, and was ted at the doors of the resid- ance by a of honor of the B.C.R., the hand playing the National Antw. He, however, drove up so quietly thet be had been welcomed and joined the groups on the lawn before the majority of the guests had arriv- éd, end his departure was managed in the seme unostentatious manner.Vice-President and Mrs, Fairbanks aided Bir Louis Jette in receiving the guests, and, posted in tbe main drawing room welcomed each arrival with hearty 'cordiality.DEPARTURE OF PRINCE.All the warships in the harbor wis thupdered forth a roys! salute pi is gout whey the Prince of ale’ > pparded the Indomitable.rture of the Pringe is really the begioning of the end of the series of festivals of the past ten days, though.the Tercentenary celebration will continue until the end of the week. The holiday spirit has bv no means been used up =, On lenving Spencer Wood His al Tighness drove in state to the Citadel, where he bade formal farewell to his hosts. In the meantime the streets leading from the Citadel to the King’s wharf had been lined with soldiers, and every preparation was made to give the heir-apperent a fitting salute as he left the soil of Canada. The strests were crowded over the emtire route. When the royal cortege appeared, preceded by officials in automobiles, the Prince's carriage, preceded by two detachments of the Royal North-West Mounted Police and a guard of honor from the R.C.D., it was grested’ with cheers, the Prince having to salute during the entire distance.A pletur- esque feature was afforded when the royal procession swung into sight from above in the narrow strests of the Lower Town.As soon as his carriage came into view the jmmense crowd on tke Terrace, as though by a preconcerted arrangement, broke into .s cheer, and the Prince rose in the carriage, waving his hat in ackmowledgment of the compliment.A moment later the guard of honor from the Garrison presented arms at the King's wharf and the National Anthem pesled fortk, which was immediately taken up by the band after band from the \\warabipe, the strains being borne in flesting fi te from ull directions by the wind in | plotur- esque and imposing confusion. The Prince inapected the guard, and bade farewell to the officer in charge, and boarded the pinmace from the Indomitable, which ran out to the big cruiser followed by half a dozen other boats from the fleet. As soon as the Prince reached the deck of the Fndomitable the Royal Standard was hoisted from the foramast, and once again the wer scarred beighta of Quebec resounded with: the thunderous Brsetingy of three nations to Great Britain's future King.Every warship was fully manned, the rails being lined with bluejackets and marines, waiting motionless ss the # flashes and noisy smoke marked the salute. As the last echoes died away the band of the Leon Gambetta was heard in the distance playing “God Save the King.” then the Admiral Aube took up tho refrain, the American warship, the New Hampshire, followed, and then in rhythmic euccee- dion the six British battleships, until the national paeon died sway up the river.A wolitacy teumpet then rang out from tho deck of the Exmouth, end a wecond later three tremendous cheers weve given by the ten thousand sailors and marines with a volume of POMMERY.In the opon market of France and Great Britain, where quality fixes the price of Champagne, POMMERY STANDS FIRST that reverberated from shore to shore, and was answered by the crowds that lined the Terrace. It was practically the farewell of Canadas to the Prince, ag well as that of the fleet, and the ceremony was well worthy of the occasion, the stately ceremonial and warlike salute harmonizing perfect): with the natural amphitheatre, whi is so picturesauely beautiful.Early this poping, in fact shortly after daybreak, the British flest will sail.so that yesterday's pr i were possibly the final farewell to piven by the people of Canads to George Prince of Wales, as in the or- courss of events it is scarcely likely that he will revisit Canada before he succeeds to the throne — sn event, however, which all Canadian citizens will join him in hoping will long be deferred.AN INCIDENT.An odd incident occurred during the return of the Prince and his party from the garden party at Spencer Wood.Lord Roberts, Field Marshal and idol of the British army, had attended the reception, of course in muiti, in whichphe looka very different from the ‘’Bobs’’ of the chromo-litho- graph, and he drove back to the Citadel in an ordinary carriage. In the meantime the streets had been lined with troops for the state departure of the Prince, and when Lord Roberts’ earriage reached the corner turning up from the Grande Allee to the Citadel it was held up by the line of troops. They failed entirely to recognize the Field Marskal, and refused to let his carriage pass, although Lord Roberts, who was in 8 great hurry, tried to convines .them of his identity.“Bobs” finally bad to get out, and started to walk up the hill to the Citadel, when Chief Detective Duncan, of Toronto, and Detective Carrington, of Montreal, in an automobile, the lines with, their “No Hindrance”* pass.mmediately recognized Lord Roberta toiling up the steep ascent, and hailed him to join them.“Bobs” lost no time in accepting their invitation, and was delighted with the incident, shekiog hands with the de teotives, and atting with evident glee as they covered the road to the Citadel.LAST OFFICIAL FUNCTION.The last officinl function in conneo- tion with the visit of the Prince was the dinner hono! were the King, the Prince of Wales, the President of the French Republic and the President of the United States.MILITARY AND NAVAL GYMKHANA, No gayer spectacle than that of the military and naval gymkhans, wkich took place on the Q.A.C.grounds yes terday, has ever, we opine, been seen in the Ancient Capital. To sustain the interest of the large crowd of apecta- tors present for three solid hours, without intermission, goes a far way to show that an exceptionally high- class and all-abeorbing entertainment was provided.H.R.H.the Prince of Wales wae the object of a great ovation on crossing the grounds to the royal box just as the R.N.W.M.P were about to commence their musical ride.Lord Roberts preceded him a'few minutes and also met with à demonstration of public favor. As the Tack Tars of the British fleet made their appeerance on the ground with six 8.7 guns a greot and enthu- niantic demonstration took placo. The manner in which they dismembered these guns, weighing nearly 1,000 the, lenving the bare gun in the centre of the ficld, sourrying to the other end of the grounds with all the other various parts and the rapidity with whiolr they re-fwembled the whols, was really a marvellous performance. How to scale walls in time of war wae exhibited by then carrying their guns over an fmprovieed 8 loot dyke, and the lightning formation of à tab- lean scone at the conclusion roused the audience to the highest pitch of en thusinem.Later on thess squads en- DAYBREAK With eager interest every ome looked a forward to the musical ride of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, a constabula whose ares covers the widest territory of any like force in the whole world. They went through « series of musical drill, which svolred considerable applause, the manner in which their stesds pranced and kept Proper time to the music being a feature of this event, showing they entered with as much vim in their “turn” as those whom they carried. The exhibition of free gynmastics and vaulting horse work, by the Gentle men Cadets of the Royal Military College of Canadas, was a splendid show, their dusky facet and arms showing that they are much accustomed to open pir work.It is rare to ses such gymnastic work performed with such remarkable precision, especially in reference to the veulting horse, à run being necessary before the springboard is reached, which is likely to put them out of gear, but they do the work so renurkably well that they land as one man on the ground, after executing cither à long ann or a short arm balance, after leaving the springboard. They concluded their turn with a very fine tableaux.Four teams entered for the tug-f- war contest, namely, from H.M.Ships Albemarle, Duncan and Russell and the French ship Leon Gambetta.Jn the first heat the Albemarle and Leon Gambetta were pitted against one another, and at the first pull the Frenchmen seemed to be taken unawares and were easily pulled across ths tape almost before they got the strain. On changing sides they recovered somewhat, but had to give way to their heavier opponents of the Albemarle, who won the heat. The second heat was between teams from H.M.S.Duncan and H.M.S.Russell.This proved a better contest, as the men were more equally balanced in weight and strength, and the H.M.S.Duncan captured both the pulls. The finul, between the Albemarle and Duncan men being equally matched, was a etiff battle, but the H.M.S.Duncan held on to the hempen coil firmly and finally won the contest. The R.C.H.A.repeated their musical drive which event bears a more warlike aspect, probably, than any other on the programme.Sack races and other events of a like character brought a most enjoyable and spectacular exhibition to a close.CHILDREN’S FETE.There were probably 10,000 to 12,- 000 children, with their parents and friends et the children’s fete and daylight.fireworks display on the Paccant ground on the Plains yesterday 185 .The di tly pleased Tommie nord ihe exp .{ bombs, ischarged showers of toys, being 8 particularly favorite feature of the exhibition, and the scramble for the free gifte from the clouds being a lively One among the young people, not to speak of the rush made by those children of maturer years who accompanied them.During the afternoon, His Roysl Highness paid a brief visit to the grounds and seemed greatly interested in the general enjoyment of the vounger portion of the population of ths Ancient Capital.LLL THE BISTORICAL BALL.The interior of the Parliament Buildings wos last evening the scene of another very interesting functicn when about six hundred guests attemded the historical ball in which a large number of the pageantry were pretent. The Legislative Council chamber had bean placed at the disposal of the guests and dancing was kept up until the wee sma’ hours of the morn to the strains of the R.C.G.A.orchestra.At midnight a sumptuous supper was served in the Legislative Assembly Chamber, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.Among last evening's esta were Earl Grey and the members of the Gubernatorial party, the Duke of Norlolk end several officers of the fleet.PRESS EXCURSION.The this year been an exceedingly exciting one from the very beginning, and the Laval and Tercentenary celebrations have given il an eclat and magnificence which will not bd.soon forgotten cither by the citizens themselves, or by the thousands of visitors who have come from all parts of the world to witness them.Quebec har the deep satisfaction of knowing that she has carried out her intentions with
