Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

rendered.WAKE UP.© The belief that Sie Wilfrid Laurier ! intends to disdoive the present | Pacliament and appeal to the country iin October next, or, at the latest in November is zo general that such ay | appeal may be regarded as all but a "certainty. There are certain signs, | such for instance as the hurried pre paration of the voters’ lists, and the flooding of the country with campaign iterature, that are very significant, and certginiy the two | parties | are busily engaged in setting their | houses in order end holding conven: tions for the nomination and selection of standard-bearers in the coming conlest. This being the case, we are impelled to ask what is being done by the Conservative party in this city and district; what evidence of political lite is it showing while 20 much bustle and activity are going on throughout the Dominion elsewhere ?In what electoral divisions have | Concarve.tive cemvnntions hoon called | na Corservaiike omirdidater selected ?Te should be remembered that in this I city and dintriet Xhe Opposition in confronted with a powerful foe, wirong !1y entrenched, and dificult to dis Itodge ; that It has to put up a fight LL] the Quadrilateral of | Tonrieriam, and har the hardest work before it of any that awaits the party. That it | should kavo thin difficult task is * largely its own fault, and due to ite want of aggressiveness aw! neglect of early action.(t is energetic onough at the last moment, but its enargy has born wasted bocatse it has.not been brought into play until the last moment, when it vuns fuseily About like a hen with a brood of ducklings, hunting up candidates without having time enough to consider their qualifics tions, glad, sometimes, to get hald of anybody, apd springing them on the eloctorate hy surprise, as the Local Government is in the habit of springing the elactions. The consequence is that the Conservative party in this city, and district has of late years found the politiesl Jordan “a hard road to travel,” and it is not at all to bs wondered at, but it has now an opportunity to turn the tables. It has a great causa to advocate, the cause of the people overtaxed and robbed through grait, and a great leader of whom the Toronto News says that four years ago he was unknown and untried, but during these four years “he has been the conspicuous figure of a great national party, and has led the Parliamentary Opposition with patience, wariness, courage and distinction. He has grown steadily stronger, and the Government steadily weaker. His party has shown increasing unity and aggressiveness; the Liberal party has as surely grown more restless, sullen, and dispirited.” Let the party here wake up and get into vigorous action.A GENERAL ELECTION.The Toronto News says: “Itis a pretty safe assumption that we shall have the Federal general election during October or November.Sir Wiltrid Laurier is not likely to delay dissolution until the legal term of Parliament has expired. That is not bis method, and, moreover, there is no reason to think that delay will fm- prove the prospect for the Government.Public opinion is steadily turning against the Administration.Nit lost ground seriously during the last session of Parliament. The Opposition is gaining in spirit, in unity, in confidence and in the good-will of the country. It is found that Mr.Borden has very solid qualities. He is singularly trustworthy. He is a for midable critic, and he has capacity for constructive legislation. It is recognized also that he is a sagacious and capable party leader, that he chooses his ground with discretion, that he cannot be stampeded, and that he will not waste his blows over potty and irrelevant issues.“It takes time for a political leader to @row into the affection of a party and the confidence of a people.Four vears ago Mr.Borden was comparative ly unknown throughout the country. His authority in his own party was bardly established.| Even in Nova Scotia bis name was less familiar to the people than was that of Nr.Fielding, It was a new word in Quebec. He had still to securs a per sonal ascendancy in Ontario and in the Western Provinces. But four years have passed, during which he has been the conspicuous figure of « great national party, and during which he has led the Parliamentary Opposition with patience, wariness, courage and distinction. He has steadily grown stronger, and the Government steadily weaker. His party has shown increasing unity and aggressiveness. The Liberal party has as surely grown more restless, sullen and dispirited.re ree ree THE BOY AND THE ANTI-CIGARET TE ACT The last copy of the Canada Gazette contains the text of the act “to re strain the use of tobacco by young persans,” and, while the object aimed at may be very laudable, the statute itnelf is rather amusing in ite wording. For the purposes of the act a cigarette is described as ‘any emall rigar made of tobacco rolled up in paper, tobacco lead or other material’ It is open to a considerable amount of conjecture that the person who drafted that legal description of a cigarette had never been introduced to one.Among other drastic enactments, the act provides s fine of Irom 810 to $100 upon any person who directly or indirectly” sells or gives 8 cigarette or cigarette papers or tobacco in any form to a boy under sixtgen. It alse provides that when the small boy is brought up in court he must tell who gave or sold him the rigarette or tobacco, and if he refuses to do so he shall be guilty ol contempt of court! What will bappen to the small boy then is a matter for mysterious and awesome conjecture. Also’ under the act, when the small boy comes up in court he shall be deemed to be under sixteen unless it can be proven that he is over sixteen, Apparently, according to the wording of the act, smoking or chewing tobacco by a boy under rixteen only becomes an offence when he does it “in the street or publie places,” As most boys under sixteen go behind the barn or take to a vacant lot whem feel impelled to indulge in nicotine, this clause should limit the operation of what is otherwise an act vory wide reaching in its provisions.sm oe heme te QUERFC CLEARING HOUSE.Total for the week ending August 13th, 1968 : Clearances, Balances.Corresponding Clearances, Balance.Claire Fontaine .Ld A cup of BOVRIL will drive away that feeling of lassitude so : common in warm weather.BOVRIL p TE CNG HROVIRE 0, St.Peter Street, Lower Town Branch, Fabrique St., Upper Town SPORTING GOODS : Exim ERI Flies, Reels, Lines, Baîts Fumer da ae pas gives vigour and tone to the entire system.— General and Heavy Hardware S.J.Shaw & Co.13 SL.JOHN STREE! av tod Kolre Dame Streets IN A CHINESE DROUGHT.In many districts of China water bir comes very scarce d tha summer months, Some of the fearful results of the drouth are described thus by the Rev.John MacGowan : “The great sun blazes down from an unclouded sky and drinks up the water that is clinging to the roots of the rice. The soil now cracks with the fervent heat and every blade of rice seems to be making an apjeal to the heart-broken farmer for the water that alone will ermble it to live.He ia now at his wit's end to save his crop, for that, perbaps, is the only thing now that lies between him and poverty and despair.A failure of the crop means very likely that he will | have to sell his daughter or a son.haps, or even barter away his wile, f he would keep the homestead from slipping from his grasp. Some of the most pitecus scenes in tho many tragic ones that cast their shadow over the home in the experience of the Chinese husbandmen, can be witnessed during the summer months when thers has been a shortage in the fall of rain.Cor.Mouniois Kil FORREST & SONS Salmon Rods, Reels and Flies, Trout Rods and Reels, “The wells have become dry and the Lines and Flies and little ponds have been drained of every | Tents, Canoes and drop of water they contained. The Camp Outfitsrice in the fields bas lost the dark ete green color that with its rich sheen TELEPHONES: tells of health and vitality end fe turning into a rickly yellow that means decay and death.Water must UPPER TOWN,S73.LOWER TOWN, 44.be got mow, and at any price, for —_— Tr t tr three davs more of this will we {he grain blasted in the fields.Electrical Supplies. They accordingly dig the ponds deeper Do not forget to call up 2737 to catch the tiniest rills that may or 1126 for your Electrical flow into them, and as the work in installations or repairs, as we the blazing sun might at once drink sre always dy to attend these up, the work ir carried on during the midnight heonra, so that not a drop of the precious fluid may be absorbed by the great thirsty dragon in the eky.“(ten these most pathetic endeavors to anve their crops end in tragedy and death.Man are making a rupreme ef fort to avert disaster from’ their homes and in the mad endeavor to gain the water for themselves the wildest par- sions of the heart ars aroused and neighbors will struggle with each other far the slowly trickling drone of water. The solemn air of night is broken with the soundn of conflict, and the stars looking down from the midnight sky see murder committed by men whose sole and controlling motive is the preservation of their homes.””—Chiea- Claire Fontaifie, > A, Xirouae ee eS FRASERS MONTREAL IMPROVED NUTMEG MELONS THE “OUTREMONT BEAUTIES” to your work.J.W.BARRETTE ELECTRICIAN 18 CROWN STREET, ———————————————— The only Great Display of Toys in Quebec— Recelving Novelties Every Day at THE BEST VARIETY OF MUSK MELON IN THE WORLD OF LIONT OREEN FLESH, LARCESIZE AND MATOHLESS FLAVOUR We control the entire crop of the STANDARD BRAND3 and the BEST VINES on the Island, and are In a position to supply Consumers with the very finest fruit on the most favorable terms.Standing orders for regular shipments during the season policited.FRASER VIGER & CO, LIMITED, ITALIAN WAREHQUSE -
