the laurels of an indoor Murathon race to-night at Madison Square Garden when victory seemed within the reach of the plucky Euglishman, Alfred Shrubb, who collapsed in the 25th mile, leaving the Indian to finish the long race of 26 miles, and 385 yards alone.Long boat's time for the race was 2 hours.83 minutes, 302-5 seconds, which is nearly eight minutes behind the record made by Dorando.the Italian, in his race with Johnny Hayes.the Qlympic Marathon winner last fall. The Indian finished in fine fettle and was in no way di M ; Madison Square Garden, New York, Feb.5.—All that part of New York's: millions, that lend their interest to the sport of rumning tumed towards Madison Square Guden to-nicht to witness the indoor Marathon race between Thomas Longboat, the Canadian Indian runner and Alfred Shrubb, the champion Enclish middle-lintance runner.A large crowd had cathered long before the doors of the big Amphi-Theatre opened the way to the saucer pan track, where the two contenders were to measure strides for the Marathon distance of 26 miles, 385 yards. The best time aver the Ganlen course war made by Dorando, the Italian, in a race with John Hayes, the winner of the Olympic Marathon Lone wer The Italian wan later defeated in a Marathon contest at the Garien ov l'om lameboat.Among éarly arrivals Shrubb ruled favorite in wagers made at 7.10 5.Trained to the minute Shrubb showed in perfect condition when he entered hin dressing room at the Garden. The Indian also made a wood impression as he donned his running attire.| Shrubb's admirers spoke of the mar- cellos apeed with which the Enplighman covers distance up to fifteen miles and declared that he would run the Indian off hin feet and end thé race in easy strides.Frienda of Lonebont inted to his fast performances as indicating that he could keen within distance of Shrubb early in the race and fhen move out for a successful eprint in the last fow miles.was some delay in getting the race started but at 9.19 the cone testanis were sent away.Shrubb immediately flashed into the lead and.assuming a fast pace, vraduallv in- oreased the distance between himself and the Indian runner.Shrubh'a tac- tion soon became plain. He swiftened his pace after roing a lap or no and though Longboat ran with easv stride It was evident that the nace was too etiff for him. When Shrubb finished the third lap the Indian was a third of a lap behind and from there to the end of the first mile, which Shrubb finished in 4 minutes, 32 neconds, the Indian slowly but surelv, fell behind. At the end of the mile TLonghoat was three-quar of a lap behind and at ‘the end of the second mile Shrubb was feading by nearly a lap and a half. The time for the two miles was 10.18 4-5.Shrubb'a almost perfret action in running brought him the admiration, of the crowd expressed frequengly in cheers and shouts of encouragement.Longboat, with his graceful lope, however, had a host of frienda who id not seem to lose confidence as the Foglishman drew into a comfortable load.Shrubb faiched the five mile din- tance in 97.84, Shrubb wan two and one-half laps ahead at this time.Jt was noted here that while Shrubb had gained two laps in the first three miles, he had only added an’ addition.SHEARS AND CLUBS al half lap in the next two miles.Shrubb's plan, it appeared, was to run a fast mile or two, during which he made decided gains.and then he would steady down to a trot.apparently to reserve his wind and strength. His sprints always created an uproar in the crowd, the spectators cheering him frantically. The Englishman gained another two and one- hall laps in the second five miles and was five laps, or half a mile.ahead when the ten miles were finished. The time for the ten mile mark was 67.22 1-5.loncboats time in his race with Dorando was 58.57 1-5, nearly a Minute and a half behind Shrubb's time tonight.+ Maintainitig hin {ast bace Shrubb increased his lead to six laps at the 12th mile but the Indian was not to be worried gut of his long swinging stride until near the 15th mile, ho shook himself and picked up about fifty yards.Shrabh, however, continued te open un the distance he- tween himself and the pursuing Indian | od and the fifteenth mile mark found the Englishman six and a half laps ahead.Shrubb'a time for the 15 miles was l hour, 28 minutes, 28 4-5 seconds.Shrubb’s running was a revelation Ao the spectators who continually cheered the flying Englishman as he moved around the track with a ma- chine-like motion that carril him steadily farther away from Longboat. The Judian sought gamely to cut down his adversary’s load but Shrubb showed no traces of weariness and continued bis fast pace undiminished.Unable to keep up Longboat dropped his sprint and fell back to his old Pace with the result that Shrubb secured an additional lap, making sescn laps in all at the 17th mile.During the running of the 19th and 20th miles Fhrubh put on a fine burst of speed and though the Indian responded wamely he placed the eighth lap be- twern himsell and Longboot. The time for the 20 mile mark was 2 hours, 1 minnte and 25 4-5 seconds. The Englishman's cheering admirers were given a heart thrill when Shrubb in the 2st mile suddenly stopped to changn his shoes.During his brief absence from the track Longbont gained one of his lost laps but Shrdbb coming on the course ain started out at a lively clip with the intention of regaining the jost lap.Tom Flanagan.the Indian's old manager, brought Longboat's wife out on the track to encourage her husband.Pandemonium hroke loose in the Garden during the 220d mile when Bhrubb came down to a walk for a few yards. It was apparent that he was in some distress, but he was soon off again with a swinging stride, though it could be seen that his pace had slowed perceptibly.Cheered on by his bride and shouts of his friends Longboat incransed his pace and soon began to rapidly cut down the lead of the now fast tiring Englishman. The end of the 23rd mile found Longboat only four lapa behind 8hrubb, who frequently broke his pace and walked, to rest Jhimeelf. The Indian kept relentlessly on and in the first half of the 24th mile brought forth a hurricane of applause by regaining another lap on his rival, Shrubb was in evident distress and it wan only a game effort on his part that kept him struggling on.Yong: boat regained another lap at the end of the 24th mile and was now setting NOILLY, PRAT & CO.’S ~~ Dry French Vermouth UNEQUALLED FOR COCKTAILS MIXES WELL WITH
