Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

The announcement by I'remier Gouin, of Quebec, that in future the exportation of pulpwood cut from Crown lands of the Province would be prohibited, has met with a very general approval among the lumbermen of Quebec. The example provided by the case of Ontario, which took a similar step in connection with the exportation of sawlogw in 1897, justifies the course now adopted by Quebec. It is to be boped that the result will be the adoption of a definite policy of protection of the forest resources of the Province from reckloss exploitation in the interests of the consumers of a foreign country. If properly cared for, the forest resources of Quebec will provide a perpetual supply of pulpwood sufficient to furnish paper not only for the Province itself, but for many outside markets.Undoubtedly history will repeat itsell in Quebec aid we shall see in the near future the establishment of larger paper mills in various parts of the I'rovince, to turn into finished product the raw material which until now has been shipped to the paper milla of the United States. The increase of 60 per cent.in the stumpaye dues and the addition of $2 a mile to the ground rent, making it 85 a mile, which have been announced in connection with the prohibition of export, are expected lo bring to the Province an additional annual revenue of at lenst $730,000.The feature of the regulations has not buen received with any more approval in Quebec than the similar action which was taken at almost the same time by the Ontario Government, Lumbermen throughout the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario have yood ren.son to claim that (he increase of the government charges to cut limber is uncalled for.l'rolite in the lumber business have been continually growing smaller nn u result of keener competition and the rapidly increascd cost of manufacture.During the lust two of thrce years no profits have been possible to lumbermen, and if the government believed that they were not securing sufficient revenue from their forest rerources they should have delayed for a time, until had recovered sufficiently from the recent depression. With the prohibition of the export of pulpwood, however, lumbermen may find.their industry so atly bene fited that they will overlook the in- creams in the atumpage dues and ground rents. If the business develops in anything like the proportion that the lumber industry in Untario did alter the passage of n similar regulation in 1897, the lumbermen of Quebec have a period of unexampled activity to look forward to.legislation prohibiting the export of pulpwood was not only necessary hut imperative, il the industry was to be saved from extinction.United States paper mills have been for years the only industry to secure the benefit of Quebec's pripwood.Naturally, the people who are interested in United States mills are now confusing_ the insue with their own political affairs.Paper manufacturers of the Uniteh States are accused of having contributed to the present situation by clamoring for a high protective duty wpon paper, and for free import of i lt in argued along the samo line that the prohibition the export of pulpwood by Quebes, ie an act of discrimination against the United States which would justify the imposition of the maximum tarid, if it were not for the fact that the gov.ernmenta ol both countries are now considering the feasibility of introducing a measura of reciprocal trade re- Istions, which will perhaps include a settlement of the pulpwood question. The people of the United States are drawing the wool over their own aves in connection with thie matter.the industry | the tariff question is illustrated by the public utterances of Premier Gouin and several others of his government, who stated long sgo that the present aclion would be taken before September, 1910.Premier Gouin, in making his announcement regarding the matter in the Legislature, od further light upon tha situation as we trotted across the desert on our way to the great Dam.Yet along the river front at Assuan a leasant breeze was stirring the grace- ul leafage and the big rattling seal- pods of the lebbakh-trees.White sails were flashing on tbe lake-like stretch of water, and the palm-fringed island of Elephautine was looking deliciously yreen and cool.In the morning and evening hours Assuan is at its best.In the heat of the day the hills which cut the clear sky sharply sll around glow like furnaces, and the pathetic flowers wilt in the public garden along the river side.It is only by the most careful tending that they are induced to hold up their heads at all. They remind ome of anaemic children kept alive by constant nursing. In the cooler hours they k up.Towards evening the long, Bich ridges of golden sand across the Nile reflect the sunset glory, and the tiny white dome on the summit tempts ome to climb. The dark-enam- elled rocks glisten refreshingly, scattered about in the stream as if by some pre-historic stirring of the river- | god in sleep. The dahabeahs moored vach a tea-perty on deck.Northward the spits of sand gleam white in the gloaming, and the earliest star is reflected in a quivering silver line on the dark water. Then the moon sails high, and the magic, mysterious beauty of the scene keeps you on your balcony till the gong sounds reproachfully and you know you will be late for table d'hote.ON THE WAY TO THE DAM.We thought of all this wistfully as we bumped along in the hot sand Dam-w .The Dam is really Assuan’s only sight.Suddenly we turn out of a narrow valley between scorching hills and come in sight of a colony shady, broad: brimmed bungalows in an oasis of vivid green. At first it seems to be s mirage, too good to be trus. But itis real. These are the houses of the men engaged upon the Uam, and there 1t is itself—a solid bank of masonry stretching across the river, a mile and a quarter long.As we run over it, in a trolley upon rails, we soon forget the heat.On one side there in a vast expanse of shining water, the reservoir which was needed to give the cultivators irrigation all the year round. On the other side there is a foaming cascade ; some of the sluices are open to let the ordinary flow of the river through. The water hurls itself adown the cataract (which it would bs more correct to call the rapids), and swirls about the rocks, disturbing the air pleasantly and filling it with a cool, plashing roar. Here in the greatest benefit that Bri: tinh enterprire has conferred upon Egypt yet.In a land where it scarcely ever rains the Government has to take the part which is played in other countries by the weather, Native Egyptian Governments had tried to fill this role and failed.A scheme of raising the level of the water in the Delta was rejected in the seventies by the National Assembly on the ground that the richer proprietors who had put up pumping engines would be injured by it; thar pumps would be needed no longer ! Even when the t Barra, was built fifteen miles below Cairo, it wan 80 ineptly planned that the engineers never dared shut the sluices. They were afraid the whole erection would be swept away.Water therefore continued scarce. When Britain decided to lend a hand in Egypt, there was a very expensive pumpmy scheme in contemplation. It Youll have benefited the Delat, no doubt, hut at far too heavy a cost.Sie Colin Scott Moncrieff, who was put in charge of irrigation, said : “Make the Barrage workable.”” The Egyptians said, “It can't be dome.” He naid, “Rubbish.” The National Assembly refused consent.Lord Cromer mignalled : “Go ahead,” Sir Colin went ahead, and his success added so much Lo the common wealth that the revenue was in , as 8 direct result, by £2,000,W) a year.No wonder the peasants called it “The Bridge of Blessings.” THF FINAL.ACHIEVEMENT.Sinos then this same system of perennial irrigation has been carried nearly six hundred miles above Cairo, as well as below it.There is a barrage at Ansiout (built 1898-1902), thers 1s another at Eena (1907-09), and thers ia the Dam at Assusn (198-1902).which in now being made higher sud stronger, eo that the storage of water may greater still.Already this magnificent feat of engi is one ol the wonders of the world, Stand on the top and look along its colossal granite back.Go through of sixtv-feet deep locks, each feet ling.Steam up the river and notices that the level water is raised for 190 miler. All this is stored up from the flood Lime te oped when phe ver begins to fall.ormerly a huge volume of the fertilizing inundation flowed useless to the sea.Now it is made to edd to Egypt's wealth, and even when the Nile is at its lowest the Government supnlies the fields with water to take the place of the rain which scarcely ever (alla. When the Dam fs tinished the water will be kept back ne fur as 190 miles along the bank of Elephantine have: Maple Leaf Milling Company CAWTHRA MULOCK & CO.At Par, $100 a Share ALL APPLICATIONS SUBJECT TO ALLOTMENT.Prospectuses and Forms of Application may be obtained from, and applications for shares should be sent to Any Branch of the Imperial Bank of Canada or the Royal Bahk of Canada Guardian Trust Co., Limited, Toronto, or to Cawthra Mulock & Company Members Toronto Stock Exchange Royal Bank Building of LIMITED now being offered by J.E.ROBERGE, Lambton, JOSEPH DEMERS, Thetford Mines, Que .“Thetford Mines ESERVE.CO.Que + = + * oo 0 os os » President » + 6 apr » Vice-Prosident Terms of Payment-26% with the subscription and 18% per month.PAR VALUE OF THE SHARES $1.00 == Details and Particulars gladly given at the office of the Company in Address all - communications to the Company or to any of the above THETFORD MINES ASBESTOS RESERVE CO.THETFORD MINES, QUE.to the southward, ard nearly 8 mil lion acres mow producing nothing will wave greenly with cotton or grain.= Daily Mail.MIKE TWIN] SULLIVAN NOT THERE vow York, May 5—Jas.Clabby, Mioqukes, did ot meet Mike (Twin) Sullivan as scheduled to-night, cause Sullivan declined to go on.Instead he defeated Geo.Brown, the Dixie Kid of San Francieco, in e ten round bout before the Empire Athletio Club.Pure Smoking Tobacco PRAIRIE Mild and Mellow.JOHNSON GOING EASILY Sen Francisco, May 5—Jack Johnaon is training leisurely, Since he has been in San Francisco he hes divided his time between bits of business and pleasure, mostly pleasure Hin automobile is his chief diversion.Mena; Little said to-day, however, that Monday had been chose for beginning the conditioning season, TONOMEAD BUILDING ON INCREASK Toronto, May 8—Building permits to the value of $2,622,065 were issued hy Citv Architect McCallum tn April this almost reaching the amount those isated in Mav.1907, the record month in the building rimes when the permits totalled $3,587,004.MINERS AND SHIPPING OF THE CILEARAYED “DOMINION” STEAM ve GAS COALS Soreened, Run-of-Mine and Slack Ror Particulars, apply to A etep tuken for another is a pearl dropped inte your ful diadem.Rn SPECIAL GLOVE SALE Friday and Saturday MAY 6th + 7th T2c Extra Fine Qgality Kid Gloves, Black, White, Grey, Tan, Champagne, Beaver, Green, worth $1.25, special for Friday and Saturday 72.THOS.DONOHUE, 188 to 194 St.John St.» «+ FRIDAY.MAY 6.1910- CUNARD LINES LUSITANIA — MAURETANIA Largest.Fastast, Finest Steamers Afloat MEW YORK TO LONDON DIRECT VIA FISHGUARD N “Ye the most expéditions toute also to PARIS — BERLIN - Leave New York We Mahi MONDAY 13 LOND! 90004 TUESDAY il PARIS Maurctan!
