Crowd Witnessed Prisoners Debark From Train in London.Liferpool, August 27—Dr., Crippen and Miss Le Neve, in the custody of Inspector Dew, Sergeant Mitchell and the wardresses who went from England to take charge of Miss Le Neve, disembarked at 2.15 p.m., at the regu- dar landing stage.Officers of the lo* cal police were on hand to assist the Scotland Yard officials. After all the passengers and the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto and baggage had been landed from the steamer the gang-planks were remov- «d but were hurriedly replaced.A door opened and Inspector Dew, followed by Dr.Crippen, and Sergeant Mitchell, Miss Le Neve and the ward- |.resses, came down the gangway and crossed into the Customs shed, before the spectatars had time to realize what had happened. After a few minutes, they cross the street and entered a saloon car on the waiting train. The blinds were at once pulled down, and the crowd had little chance of seeing the prisoners.Crippsn wore a long grey overcoat, the collar of which was turned up about his ears, and a soft hat which he had pulled down in an effort to €bnces! his face.He also wore a black muffler, He was handcuffed. On the way to the train he walked Grmly between several Scotland Yard men.Miss Le Neve wore a long blue coat which completely enveloped her.She also wore a ‘thick veil.Threats of vio- fence had been made against Crippen. The doctor seemed indifferent to demonstration, but Miss Le Neve was greatly agitated. The attention of most of the crowd was distracted from the aft gang-way and was concentrated on the big gang-way forward, where the band of the Toronto regiment was playing the “Maple Leaf” The’ train started for London at 2.30 p.m.‘It is said that Dr.Crippen proved to be an excellent sailor and was not sffected by the trip.‘ Inspector Dew snd Sergeant Mitchel werw on the verge of sea-sickness, and the ward- resséd accompanying Miss Le Neve were ill throughout the voyage.Miss Le Neve, who remained in her berth during the greater part of the woyage, exhibited a really cheerful demeanor and chatted with the ward- resdes on duty in her stateroom for hous after hour during the trip.Dr.Cripen, on the contrary, was very taciturn, and scarcely spoke except for an occasional word to Purser Pomeroy during the officer's daily official visits to his cabin.London, Aug.27—Chief Inspector Dew and Sergeant Mitchell, of Scotland Yard, and two wardresses, with Dt.Crippen and Miss Le Neve, arrived at Euston Station at 7 o'clock this evening from Liverpool.Three taxicabs were waiting at the station and the party immediately was driven to the Bow street police station court, where the accused man and woman were formally charged with the crime and then pigeed in cells. An immense crowd at Ruston hissed and booed the pair when they emerged from the station, but the police prevented further hostile demonstration, London, Aug.28—The vicinity of the Bow street prison, where Dr, Hawley H.Crippen and Ethel Clara Le Neve are awiting arraignment tomorrow, was visited by crowds throughout the day, but no glimpse of the prisoners was obtained.Dr.Crippen spent the day in preparing his defense and Miss Le Neve received a brief visit from her’ sister.To-morrow’s proceedings will be purely formal, After the evidence of the arrest of theh couple has been recorded a request that they be remanded for a week wilt be made.It is understood that Dr.Crippen will be charged with murdering his wife and Mis Le Neve with being an accessory after the fact.* QUEEN'S OWN HAD : A GREAT RECEPTION.London, Aug.27.—The mem of the Quesa’s Own Rifies stepped off the Megautie at Liverpool this afternoon and marched through the streets of the city Women Have Gone in for Aviation Meets There.Parts, Aug.28—France will certainly be known in history as the pioneer and leader in aviation.Meets, or tournaments, which large prizes are offered for winners of aerial flights, are being held all over the republic.Aerial sport generally has made far greater progress here than elsewhere. Here the public give more time to amusement and less to the constant business grind. In France, also, women have gone in for aviation to a remarkable extent. In this country there are fifty women aviators of “sky-women” if you please, to one in any other country. As might be expected, several men oppose women taking a prominent part in the art of flying through the air.Henri Rockfort, for instance, one of the leading journalists of France, contemptuously asserts that women's mental make-up and education, not leading them in a direction of knowledge of mechanics, are, therefore, unable to master the mechanism of motors and similar subjects connected with aviation, a thorough knowledge of which is necessary for the science of sky-flying is to be masters ed.An answer to the ability of women to make successful aviators is contained in the recent feat of Mme.Airsult, who has just ssiled from St.Cloul, a suburb of Paris, -‘irectly over the capital in balloon, notwithstanding the fact that for two hours she was lost in a heavy fog, but which did not affect her nerve or self possession. She made a successful descent, The Stella Club, of which she is secretary, and is composed of women, sky-women only, was organized less than one year ago with nineteen members, but now has a membership of 122, while the club han à record of thirty-five balloon ascensions since its organization.Mme.de ls Roche, who met with a serious accident during « fight at Rheime à few weeks ago, is » member of the club. She is graduaily recovering, and, with true womanly, courage, lo on ready planning daring to in her Vision Pproplans. One Paris.nmblice- oo tion, the organ of aviators declares that the time is not far distant when aeroplanes will be fitted with flapping wings.Frivate experiments of this nature, it is asserted, have been made, and have proven successful, it is pointed out that as the flying machine is modelled on the principle of flying, which is that of the birds of asserting that moving wings can be successfully applied in time, to aeroplanes.AVERAGED 623% MILES AN HOUR.Elgin, Iils., Aug.27—Samuel P.Mulford, driving a Losier “50” at the average rate of 6214 miles an hour for 308 the Lagis- | lature would be ‘interfered with at Ottawa.” We were under the impression that Sir Wilfrid and Mr.Sifton had settled the school question in that province some years ago and had made an arrangement satisfactory to the Vatican, and that Mr.Sifton had been instrumental in preventing a settlement by the Manitoba Government. Now the Premier would make an issue of it once more, to set one part of the province against the other, Perhaps his aim in suggesting that it be introduced in provinelal polities is inspired by a desire to work the downfall of the Roblin Government.THE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION.The problem that awsits the Republican party at the next Presidential nomination will not prove easy of solution. The chief interest centres in the President and ex-President, and in the coolness, which they appear to entertain to each other since the return of the latter.Friends of Taft consider that he should have 8 second term: whatever his merits or demerits have been.Friends of Roosevelt who are wont to look on Taft as no more than a protege of the ex-President, consider that he is more or less of a failure in that he has not followed along the aggressive lines indicated by his predecessor.Mr, Taft who in the ordinary course of events perhaps feels that he has a right to return to office, possibly feels aggrieved that his political sponsor of the past will probably be his rival in the.near future. On the other hand the latter may entertsin the idea that the pa.ty will suffer if Taft continues at its head.Another thing that has not helped to smoothe the situstion is the setback, which Roosevelt experienced at the hands of the New York political leaders when they threw him over for a nominee of Taft.Roosevelt is not the kind of man to accept a blow without endeavoring to exchange à quid pro quo, and this reverse will possibly dismiss any re- luetance that might have restrained him from entering the lists.Indeed a New.York paper gives out that he will now fight to the end and says that “if the ticket nominated at the convention, the temporary chairmanship of which he was refus- ‘ed, is such ss Mr.Roosevelt could not recommend to the delegates or afterward endorse to the voters of his party, it will not be worth while to print the names of the candidates upon the ballot.” .It does not require an unususily vivid imagination to construe these words into « Rooseveltian challenge."THE CAMPBELLTON ! FIRE.Referring to.the Campbeilton Pre the Ottawa Journal says:— “Why the world should be overflowing with generosity at one time whilg Indifferqnt.a¢ snotbar, is & thing bard to explain, For iestance, when Ottawa burned, the world far and nest, showeted its thousands and its tens of thousands upon this city, And yet Campbaliton, N.B., a small er, more heipicss, less wealthy town, burns and only ex houses are left.its state belng far more desperate than ever was Ottawa's, and the world in quite indifferent to its appesls for |- help” - This “vonderntktion ie far too sweep- | ing to be teas especially in the esse of Quebec, which cannot be accused of indifference.in this respect. When we copsider tir ald given to the dié- tressed town Gy our City fathers, the generous way in which the citizens have subscribed.to the “Chrenicle’s Relief Purid,” and the numerous gifts which have been forwarded to Campbellton by biigingss, houses and private citizens.of their own initiative, we have no reason to feel that Quebec can be accustd of “titter indifference to the needs of theft: “feilow-Canadians in trouble, .The thing that seylly i is hard to explain is the inaction and parsimony of the Domimion Government in this respect. It has been liberal enough both in deed as in, name on other occasions, when the-misery was farther from home. When San Francisco was laid low by earthquake and fire it showed not the , lightest hesitation in granting aid to.the relief Committes. There was à like activity when there appeared a danger of famine in Japan, when Southern Italy was afflicted with à catastrophe and when Paris was in misery owing to the floods. On all these occasions Canadian money was fortheoming for relief, and the Government did only what was right and proper in sending it.But this is oniy an additional reason why it should’ come ‘to the assistance of à Canadian.town, which has been completely blotted out by the sudden fire; which, left its population without homes, almost witlout clothes, without bedding, and with scant opportunity to earn a new living. It is one of the-worst “sins of omission” ef which the: present administration has been guilty.’ hd The” report thet the old.Ridean Hall i} to be replaced, by 8 dew resi dence of the same name om another site seems to point to a realisation of the fact that the home of the Covern- er-General has practically renched the limit of its usefulness. The present Hall, which was formerly the home of the Hon.Themas Maclay, has long proved an expensive item to the country, nearly a million dollars having been spent on it in repairs and improvements, while the end 1s not yet. These repairs have fuinishied matter for comment within the House, and it.will probably be more ercns- ‘mical in the long run to get rid of it altogether and to erect a Modern and more suitable residence. The change may possibly be occasioned by the coming of the Duke of Connaught.A At the methodigt Conference held in British Colmbia exception was taken to a clause in the discipline, which states that a probstioner should take no steps about marrisge without first consulting the brethren. One of the ministers gave it as Hii opinion that anyone, who did not know enough to choose a wife, would have a sorry outldok, and he did net think that the matter was one in which a man would display good senss by consulting his brethren. This remark occasioned both laughter and indignation, the chairman remarking that the Conference wai engaged in discussing principles of the Chutch and that these should aot be treated lightly.Doubtless there are cases when the probationer might well consult his superior on such a questiom, but that he should be under obligation to do to would seem to be carrying things to extremes. The “saving sense of humor” fe the most reliable asset in defining the border line between the: sublime and the ridiculous.‘ it is satisfactory to hear that the investigation into the circumstances conneetéd’ with the escape of Moir from Hamilton Asylum is progressing. At present the information is by- ing gathered by officials of the departments of the Provineial Secretary and the Attorney-General, ahd the case must be discussed by the Cabinet before it can be definitely decided what form tite final investigation will take.Moir's letter to a London friend asking for a present for an asylum attendant and also for several files is oald to have resched the authorities only a few weeks ago, but | this seeme incredible, It appears to have been sent in February, was seize ed by the London police and sent to Dr.English of the Hamilton Asy- was the property of the city.DICK ‘1 Provines of Quebes Jracrsrs Court of Distsist of Quebes J the City of Quebec No.1844 of 1910.The City of Quebec, Plaintiff) ve.Alfred Peliason, of the City of Quebec, in the Distriet of Quebec, farmer, .Det Defendant dant is ordered to within one month frou the est pub lication of Jus notice, Quobes, 9th August, 1910 NOWARD FOLEY, Clery of the Recorder's Court of the LADIES ! Robert B.Peary makes public in “Hampton's Magazine” for August the calculations made by him in reaching the North Pole and which were accepted as proof of his achieve ment by the National Geographical Society of America. These were the proofs which Peary refused to sub mit to Congress in March, when that body was considering an official reward for the explorer.A statement sent by Peeary at that time to the sub-committes of the House Committee on Naval Affairs ran thus :— “Commander Peary and his friends say that contracts signed months ago with his publishers render it impos- vible to make his records and scien- tifie data public now.It would not only subject Pesry to hesvy dam- ages—a loss which he cannot meet, having just extricated himself from debt incurred in conection with his various expeditions-but it would be breaking faith with his publishers, which he is unwilling to do under any circumstances.” These are the records, too, upon the basis of which medals were awarded by the Royal Geographical Society of London, the Imperial German Geographical Society and the Royal Italian Geographical Society.Series of Forced Marches.Peary tells how he started out! to cover the last lap of his dash by five forced marches, about 133 nautical miles, as indicated by observations made by Captain Bartlett just before the latter turned back with the last supporting party.A description of the instruments carried to determine the position of the pole, including the artificial horizon and glass roof, as givén by Peary, may enlighten those persons who were confused during the controversy last fall by questions of accuracy and value of observations taken at or near the pole.Peary repeats only one series of observations made on the last lap of the journey—those taken at 6 o'clock in the morning of April 7 at Camp Morris K.Jesup, indicating the position of the party as being four or five miles form the pole toward Bering Strait.Describing the final achievement, Commander Peary says: “About ten o'clock in the forenoon of April 6 I called halt, I had now made my marches, end estimated that we were in the immediate neighborhood of our goal, and at local noon, on the Columbia meridian, I made my first observation at our polar camp, named the Morris K.Jesup Camp, which indicated our position as Bo degre-s 37 minutes.WORKMAN KILLED BY BEE.An extraordinary case is reported from Kirdford, Sussex.William M.Rhind, a builder, was stung by a bee when he was at school, and ever afterward he had an intense and quite abnormal dread of the insects.Recently he was gathering mushrooms—he was spending his holidays at Kirdfordand was stung on the forehead by a bee.He was dead in half an hour, The physicians declare that death was due to shock.A well-known authority on diseases of the nerves, when seen by a reporter said: “To men and women of a highly sensitive temperament, and with a predisposition to fear certain specific dangers, the effect of shock is often attended by serious and, in some cases, fatal, consequences. Some lose their reason, and 1 have known women under certain conditions give birth to children who bore on their bodies marks of the very thing that produced the shock.“As in the case of the unfortunate man who died from shock caused by the sting of a bee—for which he felt a strong aversion—I know of one of the most distinguished Generals in His Majesty's army—a household word, in fact—who hates cats, and trembles when one springs on his knee.Others cannot endure the sight of blood, and it is an established fact that soldiers have been literally frightened to death by their ‘first vision of the carnage of battle.“Then the sting of a bee is peculiarly penetrating and irritating. From slender, horny barbs poison is discharged which is said to be composed of mischievous and pungent saits.“The sting itself consists of a sharp- pointed tubular instrument, and I can easily understand that when it suddenly pierced the man’s forehead the effect on a weak heart wonid be col- fapse.” Smoise snd Chew Carillon Tobacco Save the Hoboken this morning to his country home at Bt.James, LL I.He bore the trip well, but his insistent plea to be sl- lowed to walk unaided resulted In threé distressing incidents.Once he sank to bis knees as he tried to enter an automobile and in ascending the steps of his home be fell on all-fours from over-exer- tion.Despite his weakness, however, he maintained his cheerful mood and spent the afternoon reclining in a chair on the veranda. The Mayor, left the hospital at 9.30 0'clonk this morning. He had been there sineo August 9, the day on which he was shot.He walked unaided from his roem on the fourth floor to the elevator, and from the ground floor to the sutomobils in which be*was driven to a New York pier in Hobokep. In entering the suto, however, he overestimste® hia strength and bad difficulty in climbing onto the running board. His step was feeble and his knees bent with every step. With him rode Mrs.Gaynor, his son Rufes, Robert Adamson, his private secretary, bis family physician and Luke Clark, & hospital doetor, to whom he had teken an especial liking. To Long Island City the Mayor orde in the after-cabin, sitting up all the way, Arriving there be walked down the deck and across the gangplank unassisted, but took a firm hold on the rail. There was a wheel chair on the dock to reesive him, but he walked to an electric cars Here the Mayor again miscalculated his strength in trying to get into the car and sank to his knees.Because of the bandages around his neck covering part of his face, few people recognized the Mayor in the Long Island City station. There he was transferred to the private ear of President Ralph Peters of the Long Island -railroad, and this was aftached to & special train. He kept silent througbout the journey to St.James, which was without particular incident.A erowd of neighbors was on hand to greet the Mayor, but they respected his wish for quiet, and there was no demon- stratjon.- But he smiled and greeted those nearest him, then whirled rapidly to his home, arriving shortly after noom.Notwithstanding his two previous shows of feebleness, the Mayor, in bis joy at reaching home, asked to be allowed to go up the steps alone. He got only part way, then fell upon his bands and He was not injured, nor would he admit he had fallen because of lack of strength. He insisted thet he was strong. He mt in the opep air throughout the afternoon, reading aad gazing at the country about.Only two reporters were permitted to see him.To one of them who commented upon the attempt to assassivate him, Mayor Gaynor said: ‘‘I am content. My great hope is that the event will help to make me a better man and more patient and just.” The Mayor still manifests a disinclination to discuss the shooting and those words are practically the fist statement of bis attitude on the matter.Secretary Adamson said to-night that for the present no operation for the removal of the bullet would be performed. The Mayor ie still unable to make himself understood except with great diffi- eulty, and he is still bothered with a cough and bas trouble in swallowing. His physicians do not appear alarmed, how- evar, and ascribe his weakness to his enforced conflnem.nt in the hospital. It is probable that his projected trip to tbe Adirondacks will be shandoned.FOR THE SEMINARISTS.We make a specialty of costumes for Seminarists in
