Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Granby, Que., Jan.S—Two deaths are recorded as a result of the fire which destroyed St.Joseph's College here last night.Brothers Louciere, assistant Superior, and Daniels, the Superior, are the victims.The fire broke owt at 11.30.The teachers awakened -the students and got them ing this that Brothern Louciere lost his life, as he was not seen aîter di- rectiug the last of the students downstairs.His body is still in the ruins.There are in all 600 students at the college, but fortunately only 33 students and 25 brothers were in the building, a large number not having returned from the holidays.All were saved unhurt.: erected about 12 years ago at a cost of $75,000.A new wing in course of construction was almost completed.There was insurance for $30,000, ment last night until 10 o'clock, but they say they left everything all right.The fire started in the basement, and it was the smoke ascending to the top floor of the college, where the dormitories and private sleeping rooms were located, that gave the inmates of the building the intimation that the place was on fire.The boys, who were all strangers in the town, and who were remaining at Year's vacation, were quickly aronsed.Some of them were overcome or frightened by the smoke, and the brothers had to carry and drag many stairs to the street.” At the time of the outbreak 29 brothers were asleep on the third floor of the college, and they had no time to dress, the blaze spread so rapidly, and they had to run out into the street in their night clothes and bare feet, with the thermometer about 28 degrees below sero.[he Brothers andiogpilpsinst all thei: clothing” and belongings and suffered terribly from the bitter cold before they could reach various houses and hotels in the vicinity.Brother Daniels, who remained behind to ascertain if all the boys were out of the building, had his escape by the stairway cut off by the flames.There was no way for him to escape being burned to death but to jump.He struck the ground in a heap and when picked up was unconscious.He was carried to the home of a physician and early this morning it was said he would not recover, as his spine had been fractured.The firemen of the town made a quick response after the alarm had been turned in, but the blaze had made considerable headway before it was discovered, and when they arrived with their apparatus the building was a mass of flames from the basement to the top story.‘The firefighters had to work hard to prevent the flames from spreading to the church and other buildings in the vicinity.But, fortunately for them, the college was set back somewhat from the street and squared from the other buildings.Inside of two hours from the time the outbreak was discovered nothing remained of the building but a heap of smoking bricks and timbers.STRANGE VERICT OF A CORONER'S JURY.(By Canadian Press.) New York, Jan.S—A coroner's jury to the contrary notwithstanding, seven prisoners arrested in connection with the murder of John C.Warner, a young civil engineer of Highwood.Conn, were to-day charged with felonious aseault.Warner was killed during the recent express strike, on October 31 last, by a band of ruffians who, it is thought, mistook him for a atrikebreaker.À coroner’s jury found to-day that he had come to his death at the hands of some persons unknown, Coroner Heilenstein was indignant.“There is ample cvidence, corroborated by the prisoners them- .selves,” he said, “to show that they conspired with one another to commit a felonious assault on some one.1 shall sit as a magistrate in this case and hold all the prisoners.” The prisoners are: James F.Muiligan, Peter J.O'Connor, Alfred Lan goine, Chas.J.Hansen, Andrew Martin, Edward Hirschfield and Charles Klienmann.The first three were held in $8,000, charged with being the principals.All went to jail in defauit of bail except Kiienmann, who was pa raled in the custody of his counsel until to-morrow, when he must furnish bonds.MINISTERS LEFT FOR WASHINGTON LAST NIGHT.(By Canadion Press.) London.Ont., Jan.5.—Speaking tonight at the Canadian Club banquet, Hon.Clifford Sifton said that the Conservation Commission was opposed to any reciprocity which would give away Canada’s forests.“They would last the United States but seven years,” he said.“We must not forget that our natural resources are the means of livelihood for a great majority of a country’s people, Thereiore it is no fad, this process of conservation and saving, for the nations that have fallen have been those which exhausted their natural resources.Egypt is an example of that.It was onte the granary of the world, then it became a desert, but British energy will again restore it.” The speaker proceeded to outline the growth of the Conservation movement and then described the steps“ that have heen taken along this line in Canada.The question of water powers was first dealt with.The old view of private rights in water powers was disappearing as a result of recent discussion and agitation.Ontario had led the way in this respect by “legislation containing the organic principle of limited franchises and power to con trol,” and finally the government of Ontario had assumed tife duty of giving its people power.“I may go so far as to say,” said Mr.Sifton, speaking of their mission, “that the presence of à body whose duty it is to watch legislation of this kind, has had a healthy effect, for the promoter of any bili contrary to the great public principle knows that he will have to tun the gauntlet.” ; Bishop Fallon, on “International Pence,” said that he feared that Germany's plans were to oust Britain as the dominant power.‘That would be bad day for the world,” he said.Mr.Mackenzie King also spoke.TO SUPPRESS OPIUM TRAFFIC.{By Conedien Press.) Montreal, Jan.5—A mild sensation has been caused Py some remarks made by Recorder Dupuis in sentencing a prisoner in his court this morning.The woman was accused of keeping a disorderly house.“This woman apparently defies the court and is laughing at it” said the Recorder, “but I do not blame her, 1 will see the Attorney-General and endeavor to have an enquete to get to the bottom of this matter, because I cannot make up my mind that there is not something wrong.1 do not believe that a man like Mr.Sicdtte would do the work he is doing just for the pleasure of doing it.It is perfectly useless for me to sentence this woman to jail because in five minutes from now Mr.Sicotte would give her her liberty.The administration of justice by this court is nothing more or less | than a joke since Mr.Sicotte has taken upon himself to do away with the judgments of this court.” Mr.Sicotte was amazed when told of the Recorder’s remarks.As clerk of the Court of King’s Bench he explained, he received notices of appeals entered by these women in accordance with the law, and exacted security from them as the law denrands.lt was true that some of these women after being convicted in the Recorder's Court and entering an appeal, hd left the city, but the city was rid of them and this was 8 good thing.He declared that he intended seeing what Recorder Dupuis meant by his remarks.—— n- REFORMS IN PORTUGAL.(By Conadian Press.) lieban, Jan.5.-—The Minister of the Tuterior has desid.d to put iuto operation a comprehensive social reform scheme.The meaniron include a weekly rest day, old age pensions, public aid and the pro- tection of maternity and childhood, the | creation of a large number of prima: schools, with the free distribution of N clothing amd books to needy children, the development of higher education, especially mediaine, with the establishment of » faculty of medicine st Lisbon, and ade- Saturday Bargains Well Worth Coming For PECIAL preparations have been made to render Saturday the greatest bargain day of the year , up-to-date.The success of our Great Annual January Clearance Sele has been phenomenal, so far as it has g one, and Saturday will doubtless make a new record fiom the sales point of view.Looking at it from your side, the savings are well worth coming many miles for.Read these _pavy or sky, epecisily priced at 39e and a rare.Europe, formerly selling at $1.to $1.25 a pair, good quantity for Friday"> MA ERT Pree eminence Zu welling 4he Janvary Sale Price, Der pair.vannes cucn 050 Hi ’ “ I dE aUE] on lacy requistions t The Gigantic Sale of Furs.On the first floor, you will find an immense quantity of Furs and Fur Garments of splendid quality.These have been reduced to clear.The prices are truly sensational.Fine Sideboards.Splendid Sideboards, hardwood, Imperial oak finish.shaped front, two top drawers, large oval bevel mirror, reg.price $20.Sale Price $20.90 Bedroom Suites.Hardwood Bedroom Suites, golden oak finish, Dresser with three drawers and mirror 20x24 inches, reg.price 1690, January Sale Price aandeu se dass saa ete rates $13.50 Hi | .Brass Beds.Beautiful Brass Beds, 3 feet wide x 6 feet long, to be used as Twin Beds, 2-inch posts, bow foot, 314- inch knobs, &s value, Sale Price 5 Writing Tables.Wicker Writing Tables, solid oak i top with stationery pocket on the |i side, very attractive model, regu- ’ lar price $23, January Sale Frice, aarovresen au va ces 0e vase races only «ovina $19.50 Ladies’ Gloves, $1 to $1.25 for 65c.Ladies’ Real Kid Gloves, tan, white or black.imported direct from- prior tr —— Men's Underwear, 75c.Men's Fine Wool Underwear, sorted colors, different weights and grades, not all sizes, no garment worth less than $1, many worth more, Your choice, per garment .75¢ UET [oo LIMITED.BANKER ROBINS ALLEGED PARENTS He Refuses to Recognize an Old Couple Who Claim to be - His Father and Mother, Province of Quebec Municipal Debentures To Yield 5,% Write for particulars.(By Canadian Press.) There is a considerable amount of ‘antagonism to the erection of a Customs House on the old site, in view of the increased railway traffic which is expected in the future in the lower town.This is likely to make for congestion, and a more convenient site to all sections of the community would be at the juncture of St.Roch and Lower Town.Whether the removal of the workshops of the Marine Department to the mouth of the St.Charles is assured or not, we are not in a position to know, But, in view of the much- heralded improvements to the St.Charles, it is a moot question whether the location of the shops in that'quarter will not interfere with the local and coasting traffic to facilitate which thess improvements are intended.If the shops wera removed to Wolfe's Cove or elsewhere, it might be better, We make a mistake i we think that congestion Is expansion, and it would be just as well to look ahead and consider what will be the effect if the St.Charles site be chosen.Another question which cannet fail to be of the most vital importance to the future of eur pert is the reargani- zation of eur Harbor Commissien.If we intend to make any showing in the “Battle of the Ports,” which is a feature of transportation activities in these days, we must map out for our city a fas more aggressive policy than has been followed in the past.To insure the carrying out of such a policy, ‘ve need a Harbor Commission reorganized on the sama lines as that of Montreal—composed of three men who will be able to devote ail’ GLOVER, FRY & CO.ATTENTION!" Our Cenuine Discount Sale Commences Tuesday, Dec.217th Note the Discounts 151050 Per Gent off For spot cash or cash on Delivery Come Early and Get Bargains GLOVER FRY&C: 1911 Preparing for Work Owing to the great increase in our business in general and in our repair department in particular, we found it necessary to engage another first class German watch-maker and a first class English clock repairer, this addition to our staff of mechanics placing us in a position, that for competency and ability is second to none.When enlarging our Show Rooms for the dis play of merchandise we also added another workshop thus doubling our facilities for handling all kinds of fine repairs.We make a specialty of repairing complicated watch movements, chronographs, repeaters and timing watches.Clocks, musical boxes, symphonions, cameras, binoculars, etc, we have repaired in our workrooms by expert work-men, Jewelry repairs we will as formerly continue to turn out in a high class way, gilding, renovating and remodeling, making old jewelry look almost as good as new.As this is our first advertisement in the New Year we avail ourselves of the opportunity to thank THE QUEBEC C These words of Archbishop Bruchesi are indeed timely when we consider the tendencies of the past year on the part of a few to infame race against race and creed against éreed by ill-judged appeais which were addressed particularly to tbe young and ignorant.“We should recognize,” continues Mgr.Bruchesi, "that there are; service in many parts of the world, he had an honored career, finally settling in Quebec, where he later became an official of the Militia Department of the Domin: ion.A man of will, he had always the knew.In military matters, the late Mr.Higgins was ‘well versed.For many years he had been à member of the 8th Royal Rifles.Always n faithful member of the -gorps, he watched, after his retirement, the regiment with an esteem and interest that will never be forgotten.Not alone in military circles will Mr.Higgins be missed.He also took a keen interest in fraternal and other societies, among them the Masonic order, which conferred upon him many high honors, and among the whole fraternity of the Quebec district and Province there will be universal sorrow at the news of his death, With the family of the decensed’ afl will unite in sympathy at their great loss, for as a man and a brother there were few who had these principles su-fiuch at heart and who at sll times defeating Chicago, Indiana and Syrecuse by drop kicks.Ed.Walsh, of the White Sox, and Ed.Coombs, of the Athletics, pitch 16 innings of scoreless ball.Harry Grant, in Alco, establishes precedent for auto drivers, winning Vanderbilt cup for second consecutive time.Riley Thompson sete reco:d by winning Grand Amerian handicap shoot with perfect scores of 100 broken targets.Jay Graham breaks 417 without a miss.Colorado E wins richest harness stake of year, Matron Futurity, valued at $15,000.Andy Hall bowls greatest total of year, counting 725 pins in 3 games.RENFREW PUTS IN PROTEST AGAINST SMAILL Montreal, Jan.5—The Renfrew protest, which was fyled with President Quinn before the team left the rink, is based on section 4 of the rules.The rule states that players may be changed at any time in the first two periods but that substitutes must be placed on the ice and the game proceed without any interruption as a result of the change.As Gardner had 30 seconds of a penalty to serve when the second period ended, Renfrew officials last night claimed that the rule was being violated when Smaill was not eligible to go on the ice before the second period ended.The point will offer a ticklish argument for the league.OTTAWA WILL MEET WANDERERS SATURDAY.TheOttawa-Wanderer match at the arenas at Ottawa to-morrow night will be the main feature of this week's sport programme.It is estimated that between five and six thousand people will take in the tit-bit attraction of the puck-chasing campaign, Ottawa tickets will sell this week like hot cakes, and the club intends to take the usual precautions to guard against speculators, It is probable that Russell Bowie and Duncan Campbell will be the officials.President Emmett Quinn of the Nationa) Association expressed the opinion that Ottawa would not go into the game without Bruce Stuart.Hundreds of Ottawa fans are also praying for the returns.of the “championship kid,” but as Bruce has not handled a stick since last winter it is not at all probable that he will be in uniform, although it is doubtful if the present Ottawa team can down the Red Hands.Jack Darragh will continue et rover with Ridpath on the right flank, and Gaul is to be allowed to rest up until his injured hip is convalescent.targets OUR CARPET DEPARTMENT.If you require for next spring car- ; Philadeiphis also rose over 8 points, a3 did National Rsilways of Mexico seconds.On the other hand, there was some selling of investment stock in Hugar preforred, undoubtedly caused by the suits againet the company.The news that Mr.Taft was very adverse to mak.iny any compromise, and on this selling the stock broke some 3 points.Tha money market opened at 33% per cent, but declined in the afternoon and meny loans were made below 3.Trading all day was largely ronficed to profesmionals on the floor, and st no time did connts sion houses have any orders to speak of.Tn the last few minutes a covering movement on the part of the profesional traders nsused a milly throughout the List, which left the active etocks, ns = mule, slightly above last nigbt’s close.Total sales 480,000 shares.Quebec, 213t December, 19ra PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that, pursuant to the provisions of the Act 53 Viet, chap.68, sec.31, and its amendments, two alphebetical lists, one of the persons qualified to vote at the municipal elections for the office of Mayor and Aldermen for seat No.one in each ward of the city, and the other for persons qualified to vote at the said elections for the office of Mayor and of Aldermen for seats Nos.two and three in each ward of the city, shall be deposited in the office of the undersigned, on the THIRD DAY OF JANUARY, 1911, and will be communicated to whomsoever shall apply for them, every day, beginning the said third day of January next, 1011, to the TWELFTH DAY OF JANUARY NEXT, 1911, from NINE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING to FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON.The said lists shall, during the said period, be shown to any person making application therefor, and every | elector who may wsh to apply for the insertion or for the correction of a name in any of the said lists, or for striking a name therefrom.shall do so within the delay fixed by law for so doing.All claims or demands in relation to any names being added to or corrected or erased from the said lists must be filed in the office of the City Clerk, on or before four of the clock in the afternoon of MONDAY THE SIXTEENTH DAY OF JANUARY NEXT, 1911, being the day appointed by law, as final, and after the said day, no claim or demand will be received by the said City Clerk.Printed blank forms for complaints may be had by applying at the City Clerk's Office during office hours.By Order, H.J.J.B.CHOUINARD, City Clerk.Re 2e Opening of Dercte ter Bridge to Free Publio Circulation CITY OF QUEBEC, Magor's Office.Quebec, January 2, lo11, PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that in virtue of an agreement entered into between the Government of this Province, the city of Quebec, and the North Shore Turnpike Trust, the bridge known as Dorchester Bridge, has, on the first of January instant become free from all tolls and opened free to the public, so that all the different wards of the city have now free intercommunication without payment of any tolls, the Turnpike Trust having removed their toll-gates to the ex treme limits of the city.By order, NAP DROUIN, Mayor.H.J.J.B.Chouinard, City Clerk.THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE Hao Ormios - - - Tononte Capital $10,000,000 Rest 5 7,700,000 TRAVELLERS" CHEQUES Are a most Convenient way in whica to money when travelling abroad.They are Roue A denominations of $10, $20, 880, $100 Ans 9200 and the exact amount payable in Austria, Belgium, Denmark.France, ny, Great Britain, Bolland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Swcden ané Switzerland is ste on the face of each ch , While in other couniries they are payable at current rates, The cheques all information regard.og them may bo obtamed at every office the Bank.ma A.L.HAMILTON, Manager.Quebec Branch, 127 St.Peter St.MONTREAL CLOSING LETTER.By private wire to MaDeugall & Cowane, 51 Bt, Peter street: Montres!, Jan.5.—The only change in quotations to-day was from leet night's close was the weakvess which developed in the Dominion Irom shares.The outlook has mot been viewed with favor by the genetal public, owing to the expiration of the bounties and the non-comple- tion of the extension of the company’s plant.The rest of the list shows little or | no change.= MONEY TO LOAN On Mortgnge or Cood Securities LARUE & DELAGRAVE 2CookSt Phone 731 Cor.Ana St and City Hall Ave J ARTHUR FORTIER, LLL, Room 16, Morin Blook 111 Mountain ta TEL No.40 Money To Lead on First Mortgage IF YOU DRINK Castle Blend Teas and Coffees are selected from the world’s finest Tea and Coffee plantations Direct Importers, Blenders and Packers PE COEAN Sole Distributor 135 St.John St Phone 683 dec.13x1n TEMISCOUATA RAILWAY.TIME TABLE Taking Effect October 24, 1910, Arrives Connors, N.i PM x xD Rire pr de Là : 2 5 Arrives Riviere du Loup.4.00 P.M All Traine Daily except Sunday.Couectii at Rdmundstom Junction with Canadian Pacific By er Woodiveck, Fredgie ton, St.John, N.B.;
