Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Porfirjo Diaz resigned the Presidency of Mexico at 4.54 o'clock this afternoon.Francisco De La Barra automatically became provisional president, but will not take the oath until to-morrow.Immense crowds thronged the streets, but there was Do violence, President Poréerio Diaz, in a letter read by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, this afternoon resigned the presidency of the republic of Mexico, and at 4.54 o'clock the acceptance of the resignation by the deputies was announced.Vice-Presi- dent Ramon Corral's resignation was also accepted and Minister of Foroign Affairs Francmo De La Barna was chosen provisional president to serve until a general election can be held.Everyone had expected an uproar when the announcements should be made, but within the chamber the words announcing the event were followed in silence. The deputies seemed awed by what had taken place. In the streets, black with people, the news that Diaz was no longer president, was the signal for wild shouting and manifestations. There was no violence, or destrue- tion of property. On the motion to accept the president's remignation 167 deputies voted aye, while no expression was made by Benito Juarez, à descendant of President Juarez and Concepeion Del Valle, Astheir names were called, all other legislators rose and bowed their affirmation. In similar fashion the resignation of Vice-President Corral, now jn France, was unanimously accepted and similarly Senor De La Barra, recently Ambassador to Washington, was, chosen provisional president.Senor De La Barra will take the oath of office at noon to-morrow in the Yellow Parlor of the National Palace.Of scarcely less popular interest than the resignation was the smsump- tion of military contrèl of the federal district by Alfredo Robles Dominguez, Madero’s personal representative, insuring the handling of popular demonstrations by a leader of the new regime. The President's letter of resignation read as follows : “Sir : The Mexican people who generously have covered me with honons who proclaimed me as their leader during the international war, who patriotically assisted me in all works undertaken to develop industry and the commerce of the re- publie, establish its credit, gain for it the respect of the world and obtain for it an honorable position in the concert of nations ; that same people, Sir, has revolted in armed military bands, stating that my presence in the exercise of the supreme execuntive power is the cause of this insurrection.I do not know of any fact imputable to me which eould have caused this social phenomemon, but permitting, though not admitting, that I may be unwittingly culpable, euch a possibility makes me the least able to reason out and decide my own culpability. Therefore, respecting as I have always respected, the will of the people, and in accordance with article 82 of the federal constitution, I come before the supreme representatives of the nation in order to resign, unreservedly, the office of constitutional president of the republic with which the ns- tional vote honored me, which I do with all the more reason eince, in order to continue in office, it would be necessary ¢5 shed Mexican blood, endangering the credit of the country, dissipating: its wealth, exhausting its resources and exposing its policy to international complications.I hope, gentlemen, that when the passions which are inherent to all revolutions have been calmed, & more contcien- tious and justified study will bring out in the national mind a correct acknowledgment, which will allow me to die, carrying engraved in my soul 8 Just impression of the estimation of my life, which throughout I have devoted and will devote to my countrymen." CALGARY METHODISTS AND “NE The Champion Has Demonstrated He Can Whip Them All The next ahttractive dish to set before fistic fans will be the Wolgast- Burns mill, which Promoter Jim Coffroth has down for decision at Blot's open air arena, San Francisco, on the afternoon of May 27.This will be a teal, live championship mill and gives every promise in the world of resulting in sensational incidents, though the finish looks to be for Wolgast, ‘The champion has shown beyond the question of a doubt that he is the master of the entire bunch of them, with the possible exception of Packey McFarland; and as the Chicago boy is too heavy for the lightweight brigade, they will have to drop him down from the list.Of course surprises are liable to happen at anytime and ring contests are often very uncertain.Burns is a clever fellow, with a fair punch, a wonderful defence and as lion-hearted as the late Stanley Ketchel. We will have to doff our bonnet to him for all these natural and cultivated assets of the little Oakland boy, but it surely looks as though they re sending him in against the champion before he's ready for the championship race.Burns has done more than was ever asked of him, more, in fact, when one stops to consider how ‘he handled Hogan when the latter was « 2 to 1 shot over him.Still, it's quite a different story when an unseasoned youngster is sent in agsimst a real live champion of the Wolgast caliber, Experience counts about as much as anything else in the game of fisticuffs.Wolgast has that great confidence now, that confidence which wins him many a battle even before he strikes the first blow. It's & cinch that he had Hogan's number before they started, and we all know that he had poor La Grave beaten to a frazzle even before the Butchertown boy started to put on his gloves. But he won't beat Burns without a hard, gruelling struggle. The Oakland lad is game and he will take a punch.Much depends on his ability to use his peculiar crouch against the champion when the latter starts after him, Up to the present time this awkward position has been a bread winner for Burns, so it remains to be seen what he can do with the champion, CRICKET MATCHES.- It is expected that the Quebec Cricket Club will play at least three matches between now and June 10th inclusive, As the groundsman has now begun work there will be regular practices from this afternoon on and it is hoped that all cricketers will turn out to get into shape for the coming season which promises some good matches.OPENING OF JUNIOR LACROSSE LEAGUE.The first game in the Junior Lacrosse League took place yesterday afternoon, when the Nationals, of St.Roch, defeated the Nationals II.by a score of 10 to 6.The game was an interesting one.‘The series promises to be a most interesting one, and the different clubs are hard at work to place themselves in condition for the season. The St.Patrick's, which have an important game at the Limoilou grounds, will have a practice at the Q.A.A.grounds this afternoon, when it is expected that every player will be on hand.\\ ANOTHER DEAD HEAT AT LOUISVILLE.Lonisville, Kv.May 25-The Bourhon Handicap at one mile, one of the big stakes of the spring meeting, resulted in a dead heat between King's Daughter and Qzana at Churchill Downs this afternoon, The two horses can like a team all through the stretch, neither one having the advantage in the last desperate drive to the wire, Bonnie Kelso, carrying top weight, finished a distant third, ‘The purse was divided. The time, 1.39 2-5, is the best for a mile hung up at the meeting.LIGHT e Lane won the Maple Leaf stakes and Chief Kee captured the Liverpool cup.Chief Kee carried 191 pounds in bis race, and came from behind and won in a gallop by a half dozen lengths R.T.Wilson also bad two winners, Naushon and Amifi, both of which won in runaway fashéon.Naushon was making his maiden effort of the season in the Alexandra Purse, a dash of six furlongs, in which he met an ordinary lot.He simply played with his field, winning with plenty in reserve by a length and a half, The stewards of the Ontario Jockéy Club are determined to stamp ott rough riding, as was evidenced by their action in disqualifying Vestibule on Wednesday Thirty-Forty today.Thirty=Forty, well played by his people, proved an easy winner in the second race.He came from behind and closed with a rush, but at the sixteenth pole, where &te caught Florida's Beauty, he swerved over and bumped the filly and then drew away into a two lengths lead.Guy Burns, wh had the mount, was suspended for the remainder of the meeting.Only two of the four tsarters in the Aintree Steeplechase finished the course.Merryman, who bled during the race, winning under a pull from Judge Cronin.Dinna Ken took off too far at the DAY.Montreal, May 25—Ascension Day is being observed with due solemnity in all the Roman Catholic churches in the city, and in the various Anglican churches. The celebration in the Catholic churches is especially magnificent.Solemn high masses were sung, and at the end of the Gospel, the Paschal candle, which had been placed in the sanctuary since Easter Saturday.and lighted during the important offices of the church, was extinguished. It was then removed from the sanctuary, symbolical of Christ's ascension into Heaven.Special devotional services will be held this evening .A feature at the services in all the Catholic churches today was the offering of prayers for the repose of the soul of the late Father Fiz-Henry, found drowned at Kingston.CONGESTION IN SHEDS IN MONTREAL Bellona could not be examined by the custom officers for almost a week, owing to the fact that there was just enough room in the shed to distribute the cases.Barrels, iron, boxes of all substances, bales of hay, and many other articles are piled high in practically every steamship shed, and the workmen find it difficult to get about in many instances, In the Canadian Pacific Atlantic line shed, this Is very ui .uceable, The shed ts packed so full of cargo that a team of horses has hardly room to turn, and & large number of cases and harrels have been placed outside the shed in order to give New York, May 25.—Events which followed the action of the Republic Iron and Steel company yesterday in reducing prices were the predominating influence to-day in the securities market.Traders were confused as to the exact meaning of the move of the Republic Company, which was soon followed by similar action on the part of other indey .ndent concerns and a subsidiary of the United States Steel corporation. There was sharp difference of opinion as to the effect upon the steel and iron trade, and upon the general industriai and financial situation.Various indefinite reports of probable further price cutting by many or all steel and iron producers and by manufacturers were aded to the confusion, and it seemed doubtful whether this phase of the situation could be cleared until it is apparent whether reduction of prices had exerted a favorable influence in stimulating business. Some stock interests take the view that the poor condition of the trade is not concerned with prices, but with general industrial conditions, and that price cutting will have little effect. If the experiences of manufacturers who have cut prices confirm this theory, the movement may not be carried further.Steel men said late to-day that the revision had not resulted in the placing of any large orders.’ : ‘The pafigital aspect of the situation received cOfsiderable attention, especially in view of the fact that the State Investigating Committee began its work to-day.It was said In some sections that the reduction of prices might be referred to in the effort to demonstrate to the nation’s law-mak- LICITATION.Sale Under Authority of the Court.I, Yves Montreuil, the undersigned notary public, duly commissioned and sworn in and for the Province of Quebec, residing and practicing at the city of Quebec, duly authorized by two ordinances rendered by the Prothonotary of the Superior Court of the Province of Quebec, in the district of Quebec, at Quebec, dated the seventeenth May instant, 1911, shall, on the sixth of June next (1911), at the hour of eleven o'clock a.m.sell by publie auction in the city of Quebec at my office, Quebec Fire Building, 81 St.Peter street, room 37, the following immoveables, viz.: 1.That immoveable property situate at the corner af d’Aiguillon and Ste.Marie streets, municipal numbers 132-134-136 ot d'Aiguillon street, known and designated under the number three thousand two hundred and seven on the official cadastral plan and book of reference thereto for St.John ward, of the city of Quebec, with thé buildings thereon erected.2.That immoveable property situate at the southwest corner of d’Aiguillon and Ste.Marie streets, bearing the municipal number 13934 on d'Aiguillon street and 46 on Ste, Marie street, known and designated under the number three thousand one hundred and forty-two of the official cadastral plan of St.John ward as aforesaid. These properties, namely, the number three thousand two hendred and seven, and the undivided half of number three thousand one hundred and forty-two, belong to Miss Alice Boulet, Albert Boulet, Miss Marie Jeanne Boulet and Paul Emile Boulet, minor children of Mrs.Josephine Richard and of the late Joseph Philean Boubee, and Miss Leocadie Boulet, Joseph Philippe Arcadius Boulet, and Emile Boulet, the last named still minor children of Mrs.Josephine Blais and Joseph Boulet, in his lifetime also of Quebec.as representatives of their respective fathers in the estates of their grandfather and grendmother; and the other undivided half of the immoveable propetty number three thousand one hundred and forty-two, belong to Joseph Philipps Boulet. For particulars.YVES MONTREUIL.Gauvresn & Montreuil, Notaries, 81 Bt.Fares fig Ruebee Fire Buildingeax 18tojaned rr .THE QUEBEC CHRONICLE.Neue Bleu À C0 Stock A No.8331.Per dre Private Wire to Montreal, Toronto, Boston and Now York Telephone No.945, C.W.WALCOT, STOCK & BOND BROXER 98 St.Peter St.Tel, 377 Approved Municipal, Corporation and Industria! Advertising Agency, Montreal, whose subject was, “Publicite, un Facteur Important dans le Delevoppment des Affaires.” Among the members present were: K.S.Fenwick, president; P.H.Graham, treasurer; J.O.Linteau, secretary; Jules Gauvin, E.A.Lothrop, J.H.Aloz, W.J.Campeanu, PR.J.Durkin, L.E.Kronstrom, D.A.Butler, P.W.Dugla, John Thomson, Fred Dixon. The first speaker was Mr.Bellew.His address was a masterly exposition of the necessity for intelligent advertising as a force in merchandising. He spoke, in part, as follows: “Mr.President and Gentlemen: About 3,000 years ago there was a splendid book called Genesis, written by Moses. Some 300 years ago it was translated into the English of that date, and has remained in that form up to the present time.It seems to me, however, that the story is more interesting’ when told in modern English. It appears that, in the beginning, Adam and Eve were alone on earth and had nothing to worry about. They found ail the food they needed, on the fruit trees, and ali the clothes they needed, on the fig trees. One day they ate the wrong kind of fruit and had to move to a climate where eon- ditions were not so comfortable. In the course of time the population of the earth doubled and the problem of supplying food and clothing for the people became more difficult.“Cain secured a corner on the food supply, while Abel cornered the wool market. Now, in those days, the Creator used to take a more direct interest in human affairs, and it was customary for merchants to offer Him a share of their earnings in thanksgiving for His co-operation.Cain gave Him the goods he found most difficult to use, whereas Abel gave Him the best he had in stock.“As a result, the Creator was more satisfied with Abel's service than with Cain's, and -as satisfied customers make a !usiness grow rapidly, Cain was soon extremely jealous of Abel's success.Cain then started & war of exterminating competition and put Abel out of business. Now Cain and Abel had absolute control of the entire food and clothing supply of the world, and, if they had only co-operat- ed, their descendants would still have control of the food and clothing market, and there would be no high cost ; of living.“The value of co-operation in business is extremely great. All business success depends upon securing a volume of profitable trade, and this in turn depends upon making many permanent and profitable patrons.Up to a given point, there is no element of profit in the work that any man does every day, but once that point is reached, every additional dollar's worth of business done increases in compound ratio the profit on all that went before “There is not one employer in a thousand who realizes this truth, and yet what a marked improvement there ; would be in business if all employers would conscientiously work to pass that point.“Volumes of trade depands always "on the confidence of the buving pub- tic, and the ennfidence of the buying public depends on the personality of the firm; on the quality of its goods, and on the excellence of its employes.© “All the members of this club are ! building business, and in so doing you i are using the four forces which combine to develop trade.“First, the goods must be right; second, the service must be satisfactory ,50 that the customer will tell others, for the satisfied customer is probably the greatest force in building business. The third, selling force, is the salesman, who directly persuades à given customer to buy a given article, and the fourth selling force is the advertisment which draws the customer into the store.“Salesmanship is the power to persuade people to purchase goods which will give satisfaction to the purchaser, Advertising may be defined as ‘Selling by publicity,’ Advertising is the general aspect and salesmanship is the specific aspect. The advertising man tells his story to a large number of people at the same time; the salesman tells his story to one customer at a time.Advertising persuades people in general to come into the store: salesmanship persuades a given customer to buy à particular article, “I was in Pittsburg a few months ago and F had occasion to speak to the president of the Commercial Travellers’ Association there, In answer to the ’phone he graciously told me to come right over, \\When | reached his office, instead of listening to my story, he began talking very earnestly to me about the advantages of Pittsburg, and as he told of its beautiful rivers and hills, he jumped to his feet and became very enthusiastic. He told me of all the money the people make there, and all the fun they have with it, and wound up with a glorious peroration minimizing the smoke nuisance and exhorting me to boost Pittsburg. After forty-five minutes: he sat down and said: ‘That's the speech | have to make to-night st the Hardware banquet. How well say, “Life is worth living in Pittsburg.’ “Here in Quebec there may be disadvantages, but none to compare with those of Pittsburg. The people in Quebec are happier and healthier than in ‘any other city in North America. And, after all, happiness is the end and aim of life.If we have that, what more could we want? But, even then, we will shortly have all the clements of material success.Within a few years the Beauport flats will be filled in as far out as the low-water mark and will be all built up.The city above the hill will extend westward to the bridge.Grain elevators will be built to care for the wheat which will be brought in by the Trangcontinetal Railway.Harbor facilities will be increased, millions will be spent on railroad terminals, and, within twenty- five years, Quebec will have a population of two hundred thousand souls, Let us, therefore, co-operate and do all in our power to hasten on the joyous day. It's coming anyway—let us prepare for it.“I thank you, gentlemen.” Mr.Fenwick, in a few remarks, expressed the thanks of the club for this able and interesting address. He then introduced Mr.Fontaine, who spoke in French.Mr.Fontaine's address was on “Advertising as an important factor in the development of business.” He expressed his pleasure in being called upon to address the club. His experience of 25 years in the advertising field rendered his opinions valuable and intenesly practical. The first point dwelt upon was the advertising of the manufacturer, either direct or through agencies.“The newspaper,” said Mr.Fontaine, “improves the efficiency of the salesman, and accomplishes wonderful results in a very short apace of time. The newspaper is capable of covering a very large territory at the same time.Special attention must be given to the preparation of copy, illustrations and typographical display, in order to determine the reader to buy.” ‘The importance of trade marked goods was enlarged upon and ably and convincingly shown.Price-maintenance was also touched upon, and many concrete examples of successful trademarked articles were quoted. In closing, Mr.Fontaine wished the Club every success and expressed at burg is smoky, and if most enthusiasticglly in favor of su an organization city.Mr.Jules Gauvin rose in response to Mr.Fontaine's happy remarks and in a neat little speech expressed the sincere thanks of the club to Mr.Fontaine.‘ After an interesting discussion, in which all those present took part, the meeting adjourned about 11 years, New York's iron mining industry seems once more to be on a sound and prosperous basis after a long period of depression and suspended activity incident to the remarkable growth of the Lake Superior districts, according to the annual res port of .State Geologist J.M.Clarke.Reports made to the office of the state geologist by the iron mining companies show that the gross output of ore, in 1910 amounted to 1,175,580 long tons, which was the largest tonnage that has ever been hoisted from the local mines in à single year.A part of this total consisted of ore too lean for furnace use, hut after allowing for concentration the production amounted to 150,190 tons, as compared with 991,000 tons in 1909.The value of the output also reached record figures with a total of $3,906,478, against $3,179,358 in 1909, CURRENCY REFORM AND LOANS IN CHINA.Peking, May 25—W.D.Straight, the representative of the American Financial Syndicate, which, with the British, French and German bankers, will participate equally in the currency reform and the }lukwang railroad loans, one of $50,000 and the other of $40,000,000, with an arrangement for an additional $20,000,000 if needed, recently signed at Peking, left the Chinese capital to-day for New York by way of Siberia. The full texts of both agreements which were published to-day contain no evidence of the reported corner ih loans or concessions by the quadruplet group of banks, though the group's position is pre-eminent because of its financial strength and ability to consummate its undertakings.Nevertheless, bankers here think that China probably will conciliate the Russo-Belgian syndicate with the next ionn. The government is continuing its determined policy against the provincial opposition to the Hukwang loan and the opposition appears to be waning."An imperial edict, issued to-day, denounces the pravincial railway companies as swindles, aud the govern ment proniises to repay the forced assessments which have been levied by them. The promulgation of the Hukwang loan, the text of which is nnprece- dented, is intended to acquaint the country with the measures contained designed to prevent à misapproprise tion of funds and to asstre the construction of the railroad lines in Central China, because it la reported prominent provincial officials suspect that the central authorities will continue the extravagant methods of former times, Be Good to Yourself and the world will be good to you.The way is to kee qour stomach, liver, eys an wels right. And you'll” find great help in BEECHAMS PILLS Said
