Old Orcnard, Me, July 1—Wm.G.Marshall, a merchant of Montreal, took his first ocean plunge in twenty years to-day, and it cost him his life.Another bather, N.Hillary, a Toronto banker, nearly lost his life in an attempt to rescue Marshall.Mr.Hillary was bathing with a score of others, when he noticed a man, who later proved to be Marshall floating some distance from shore. After watching him .a moment, Hillary made up his mind that something was wrong, and swimming to the man's side, found him unconscious. In trying to reach shore with his burden, Hillary became exhausted aml but fos.prompt assistance from his comparfions, would have drowsed.Marshall was dead when a boat reached the two.It is supposed that death was due to heart disease.‘The dead man was about 50 years old and was junior member of the firm of Wm.Marahail & Sons, wholesale dealers in hay and grain at Montreal. His wife and two children were stopping with him at a hotel here Mr.Hillary is assistant general manager of the Traders Bank of Canada, at Toronto.BE CONSERVATIE BILLY WS HELD Cowansville, Que., July 2—Domin- ion Day was fittingly celebrated here yesterday by a big Conservative raliy at which a menu of patriotic and political speeches was served out to some 2,500 electors and many others.Hon.C.J.Doherty was the chief speaker and delivered a scathing indictment of the govrenment, while the reciprocity pact was dealt with in particular by Dr.F.H.Pickel, Conservative candidate for the county at the next election. The meeting took the form of a picnic, aver which Mr.T.Montague and Dr.C, Montgomery presided, Dr.Pickel declared that Canada had built a country despite American an- ta gonism in the past and that Canada was now the freest country on earth. He then appealed to the farmres, who constituted a large section of the audience, and spoke at length to show how futile were the arguments that the farmer would get better prices for his goods under reciprocity; at the same time pointing out how the whole Dominon would suffer, and going into the question from the point of.view of many industries.Mr, Doherty reviewed the career of the adminstration, paying particular attention to alleged scandals and to the many follies and extravagancies which carried 50,000.Altogether 12,000 people saw the baseball matches between the Leafs and the Bisons and 6,000 saw the Toronto lacrosse team defeat Montreal at Scarboro Beach. An open-air horse show in Queen's Park in the morning attracted thousands. The Grand Trunk report an increase of 40 per cent in ticket sales and the other roads did a corresponding business.he claimed the Liberal party had been guilty of.Mr.Frank Curran also dwelt on the same topic, saying he had been struck by the manner in which Liberal members had “whitewashed” friends in the arty in recent disclosures in the ouse of Commons, but he hoped that the electors would not show the same blind allegiance to party lines in the next election.POMMERY FILS & CO: Shippers of the {famous POMMERY CHAMPAGNE “POMMERY” stands for the highest grade of Champagne shipped PARIS oi} Pay the Highest LAW, YOUNG & co.from France.Prices for POMMERY MONTREAL EARTHOUAKES IN CALIFORNIA Two Heavy Shocks Were Experienced Yesterday Panic in San Francisco.San Francisco, Cal, July 1—Two earthquake shocks, the heaviest felt since the shock of 1906, and separated only by a few seconds, jarred the central portion of California and western Nevada to-day.The first sharp shock experienced at 2.01 o'clock was followed in a few secvonds by ane of similar intensity, each lasting about five seconds.Only trivial damage has been reported from any section, but in San Francisco and other cities in the affected area panic seized upon crowds :it stores and restaurants, and there was a pell-mell exodus from the large buildings. One peculiar feature of the earthquake was that it did not appear to follow the old “fault” in the eartu’s Men's Tailoring EN'S 2-pce.Outing Suits in Wool Homesyün, beautiful shade of grey, with white or grees stripe, sac coat style, with or without lining, regular price $15.00, made to your measure for.$10.78 7 Pure PEE] Retail Division, 157-173 St.Joseph Street.L LIMITED.ME Summer Suits in Grey Worstyle, with or without lining in coat, our regular price is $15.00, made to your measure for .$10.78 Men's Tailoring sted, choice shade of grey with natty white stripe, 2-pce Sac crust whish has been the play ground | from the sea coast eastward to the sierras, including hitherto exempt | mountain areas. It was felt to the northward of Sacramento in the Sac- Fresno and to the east to Carson and | Reno, Nev., the former place experi encing the heaviest shock in its history. Some slight damage was done to ; fight at the polls will be the most bitter in the annals of Cansdian politics is a foregone conclusion. To begin with, after fifteen years of rule by one side, the argument of “time for a change” will be strong.Next, the administration record of the Laurier Government is open to more than criticism—it has been scandalous to à degrés hitherto unimown in Canadian public life. The naval policy will also loom large, but the primary issue will be reciprocity. In every province except Quebec the agreement is bound to be the great issue for the electors to decide upon.In Quebec the Nationalists, urged on py Bourassa, have forced the naval issue to the forefront, and Sir Wilfrid will be forced to fight this question in his native provinces as well as reciprocity.Fundamentally, the French Canadian abhors the very suggestion of militarism, and it is being daily painted in its blackest hue by Bourassa and his followers. The Conservatives of Quebec, and especially in the cities and manufacturing centres, are just as determined in their opposition against reciprocity as the party throughout the Dominion.Considering all the circumstances, the infiu- ences that will enter into the contest, ithe tariff and naval issues and a score of side questions, the clection, when is comes, will undoubtedly be fought wth an unparalleled vigor. In the superior train service that is offered by this line, including the famous “International Limited” from Montreal daily at 9 a.m., and which is the finest and fastest in Canada, many passengers will be attracted this way.The route via Chicago is a most interesting one, taking passengers through the principal cities and towns in Canada and in the States of Michigan and Indiana. In addition to this a choice of seven lines between Chicago and St.Paul and Minneapolis is offered.Owing to the great number of Canadians who reside in Chicago, St.Paul, Minneapolis, Duluth and other cities en route, there is no doubt that the Grand Trunk will find many patrons who will take advantage of the opportunity thus afforded them for a brief visit at the stations with their friends, ministrators, trustees, liquidation of insolveit estates, compromise between debtors and creditors.Province of Quebec District of eben No.1724.In the mattèr of PF.Schryburt Cie, Boot and Shoe Great Britain” which enables it to make due allowance for those shortcomings which heretofore have not reacted considerably upon Canadian municipal credit. This may not always be so.On the other hand, it is only fair to note that the chartered banks and bond houses, usually the sponsors of these particular flotations, have invariably acted as a valuable influence to the maintenance The municipalities also have shown much more disposition to regard their credit as a delicate gnd important factor.Room for shortly was somewhat of a surprise, as the | prairie provinces were generally variation in municipal financing during recent years, | ple in casting their ballots in the next general election will be thinking not only of Reciprocity, but of the danger of continuing in power a government which was not only willing but anxious to force upon them a charge in policy so important as to be called the most important in the country’s history, and that without consulting their judgment in the smaliest measure.FRANCE'S NEW MINISTRY.The overthrow of Premier Monis after a sway of a little less than four months is & reversion to the conditions which prevailed in the early years of the third republic.Until comparatively recent times the average life of a French ministry was about nine months, but with the accession of Waldeck-Rousseau, who held the post until 1902, the average was lengthened. His successors, ‘especially Combes and Clemenceau, also had a long tenure. But apparently frequent changes will now be the order of the day for a few years.Like his immediate predecessor, Premier Caillaux is a rather color- lees persanags, whose career is not special attention on the part of the passenger.Inspection is not neces- tary at any of the points at the borer.Another feature that will appeal to the homeseeker is the comfortable transfer at points like Chicago, St Paul and Duluth into freshly venti lated clean cars, avoiding the necessity of travelling a long distance in the same car, In addition to the above routes, ths sale of tickets is also authorized via Sarnia, and the Northern Navigation Company's magnificent steamers pros Lake Huron and Lake Superor. For further particulars apply to any agent of the Grand Trunk Railway System, or write to Mr.J.Quinfan, District Passenger Agent, Bomaventure Station, Montreal, or Mr.A.E.Duff, New York, July 1—To those who expected that the long delayed report of the Commissioner of Corporations in the United States Steel Corporation would have an unsettling effect to-day's stock market must have been something of a disappointment.Trading was very light, in keeping with the usual summer half holiday, but the list was at no time weak.On the contrary, decided strength was manifested in certain issues, and the steel shares reflected a steady undertone. The findings of the commissioner were the subject of general discussion in finacial circles where the concensus of opinion seemer to be that the showing was rather more favorable to the so-called trust that had been expected. The fact that the United States Steel Corporation produces at this time on per cent of the entire crude and finished steel and iron was accounted a strong point in favor of the corporation, which might be of influence in shaping the decision of the government in regard to further action in this direction.Erie shares were again the strong feature of the railway list and while no statements of an official character have yet been vouchsafed it seems to be accepted as a fact that that property is in some way to be likned with the Canadian Pacific, probably through one of the latter's aubsi- diaries.Western Maryland was another active and strong issue, the en | common advancing over 2 points. The road has long been entangled in costly litigation from which it may soon emerge. The list with few exceptions held its firm undertone to the close, Annogncement that several of the prominent express companies had voluntarily decided to reduce rates was without effect on the shares of that group. The Harriman stocks held the greater part of their recent gains despite the publication of figures indicating heavy gross and net losses for the fistal year.Official figures from the local customs authorities show that exports from this port for the fiscal year exceed by $123,000000 those of 1909-10, Ke Bees à Stook Brokers No.8351.Per Sed Private Wire to Montreal, Toronto, Boston and Now York Telephone No.948.C.W.WALCOT, 98 St.Peter St, Tel, 377 Approved Municipal, Corporation and Industria!
