Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Theatres.” Judging from the tone of the letter signed “Fife Rail” I have come to the conclusion that he must have just arrived from Batiscan or some other large shipping centre, and is “boosting” Quebecers, with his knowledge of jib-boom, whiskers, bumpkins, ete, and relating to Mr.Editor, and the numerous readers of this morning paper how ships are anchored in weli- regulated ports.I cannot agree with “Fife Rail,” and will not allow him to crush “Naughty Cuss,” who is evidently a gentleman of knowledge in the world and its ways, who shows the very superior Qualities of a well-bred man and a man of wide experience when he says that it is proper for “Ladies to wear their hats when and where they please,” and I am confid- that all the ladies wili join with me in “closping hands across the sea” with this gallant sea-faring gentleman.Thanking you, Mr.Editor, Yours truly, A Well-Wisher of Naughty Cuss.THE LAW AND HATS.To the Editor of the Chronicle.Sir: With reference to ladies wearing such large, tall hats as to prevent many seeing what is going on on the stage: 1 have spoken to a lawyer, and understand the manager has a right to refuse any woman with such a hat getting a ticket of admittance, until she takes it off. This would be à very simple way to stop the constant annoyance to those regular patrons of the moving pictures.Try it, Mr.Manager, and T ath sure those who call themselves ladies will comply at once, and should any hesitate, rest assured they have no right to be called ladies.Yours teuly, 8S.8.C.H.December 13, 1911.SHIP'S WHISKERS.To the Editor of the Chronicle.Sir: “Old Salt” is really childlike with his question: “Who ever heard of a vessel having whiskers?Tf he will look at Rule 35 of the Port of Quebec he will find the following: “AI vessels lying at wharves must have their jib-booms, whiskers, divits, etc.rigged in.” Wehster's Dictionary thus defines a ship's whiskers: “Whiskers (naut.), iron rods extending on either side of the bowsprit.to spread, or guy out, the stays, etc.” As there it 3 large number of coples of the dictionary in use, very many people must Mave heard of a vessel's whiskers.Bye-by, “Old Salt.” As to the cffusion of “Naughty Cuss.” it fs too vulgar and silly to call for notice.Yours, FIFE RAIL.December 13, 1911, SIR CHARLES TUPPER ILL.Montreal, Dec.13.—The Star, tonight, publishes a despatch from its London correspondent to the effect that Bir Charles Tupper Is seriously ill with bronchitis at Bexley Heath, and that owing to his advanced age the doctors consider hig condition critical pigeonholed ! the filty odd men stitl unaccounted for reached its lowest ebb.Late to-day the report spread through the village that three more survivors had been found and practically the whole population flocked to the mine for news only to be diappointed in finding that it was untrue.Progress in the search was obstructed by a smoldering fire which raged from early yesterday until three o'clock this Dec.13—Nation- al wide interest will center here tomorrow, when the weeks of works by detectives, attorneys and accountants who have compiled evidence alleged to show the complicity of others than the McNamara brothers in a dynamiting conspiracy will be turned over to the federal grand jury for formal investigation.Letters and records of the International Association of Brid the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers have been abstracted and checked against statements of Ortie E.Mac- Manigal, confessed dynamiter in the employ of John J.McNamara, the convicted secretary-treasurer of the association. This class of evidence is to be delved into to fathom the charges of a plot, with its seat in Indianapolis, by which, according to the National Erectors Association, explosives in the last five years were carried into seventeen states in viola-‘ tion of federal regulations and by which about one hundred structures have been partly or wholly wrecked, the Los Angeles Times building being only one of them.Herbert S.Hockin, Secretary of the Iron Workers’ Association, returned to-day from St.Louis where, it was reported, he had com ferred with President Frank M.Ryan.Hockin declared Ryan went to Chicago and said he would return here.to-morrow, OF THE MISSING JURYMAN.Kansas City, Motrace of Harry W, Waidron, the runaway member of the jury that has been hearing the second trial of Dr.B.Clark Hyde, alleged slayer of Col.Thomas BE.Swope, has been found.A dozen or more clues were investigated by officers to-day, and to-night County Marshal Joel Hayes says he is “up against a stone wall” Hope that Waldron will be found soon practically has been abandoned by Prosecutor Conkling and Jude Porterfeld. It is uncertain when the jurymen shall be freed. The feature of the case that is worrying the state's attorney is the announced intention of Dr.Hyde's attorneys to assert, if this jury is discharged, that the life of the defendant cannot again be placed in jeopardy on the cha ge of killing Col.Swope.Judge Porterfield does not think the second trial has jeopardized the life of Dr.Hyde.However, the prosecution desires to be certain that the court's view is correct before it agrees to the discharge of this jury.Even if Waldron should return now and resume his duties as a juror, say attorneys for the defence, his action in absenting himself from the other jurors would be sufficient ground for reversal. The state law says the 12 men must be kept together from the beginning to the end of the case.TO SELL RACE then came another reel with two men from No.4 and then a iad- der with two more men.In all, six men and a deputy chief were on the ground. He thought that the chief should make a report giving some reason why only two men turned out from No.6 and: why there were not more than six men at the fire.Ald.Lamontagne stated that if there was no ladder in No.6 Station the Alderman of the ward should have reported the matter to the committee.Ald.Mulroney replied that this was not the first time that the requirements of No.6 Station were brought before the committee, and it was not the business of the Alderman to see that the necessary ladders and other fire apparatus are in the station; that was the duty of the committee, who shoyld act on the chief's report. He was aware that horses condemned as unfit for service in other stations were transferred to No.6 Station. On motion of Ald.Lamontagne, AM.Dinan was appointed acting chairman in the place of Ald.Cummings during the latter's illness. The City Engineer will visit No.6 Station to-day and will also visit No, 8 Station to-morrow.TELL-TALE FINGER PRINTS ON CIGARETTE CASE.New York, Dec.13.—Finger prints, alleged to have been those of Joseph Roberts, a West Indian negro, constituted the principal evidence which promptly convinced a coroner's jury today in holding Roberts for the grand jury on a charge of homicide.Roberts was the elevator man of a Canal street building where Isaac S.Vogel, a wealthy jeweller, was niurdered and robbed last week.On a cigarette case among the stolen articles found hidden in a loft of a building, a finer print was distinctly impressed. The lines correspond exactly, the police say, with those of a finger print on which Roberts was recently indicted on the charge of safe burglary, and also with a fresh impression.THE OLDEST VOTER IN NORTH PERTH.Startford, Ont., Dec.13.—The oldest voter in North Perth, if not in many constituencies, was Charles Glenn, | aged 97, who voted at Carthage.Mn { Glenn voted both on Sept.21 and Dec.I for Messrs.Morphy and Torrance respectively.Mr.Glenn is one of the pioneers of Mornington, where he has resided nearly 60 years, coming to Canada from the North of Ireland, which was his birthplace. You, who wish to give handsome presents to your children for Xmas and New Year's, go to Faguy, Le- 8 pinay & Frere, where you will find aver 5,000 samples.Come immediately and get first choice.FAGUY, LEPINAY & FRERE, ST.LAWRENCE HALL Montres!
